Film: Q1 2017

A list of 2017 movies that I saw in theaters these first few months. Didn't see a lot this quarter because most of the movies I saw were Oscar movies left over from 2016.
1Chance the Rapper
Coloring Book

Lego Batman Movie: 4/5
Almost excessively fast paced without the surprisingly affecting drama of its predecessor, it's a really fun adventure even though I wish it played more by its own terms instead of pawning off endless amounts of pop-culters references and characters. Batman has an interesting enough lore without needing others to fill in to keep things engaging. Still, it's hilarious, really well-written, and visually astounding. What else could you expect?
2Damien Rice
My Favourite Faded Fantasy

Logan: 4.5/5
While it's occasionally held back by overused franchise cliches, Logan is otherwise a surprisingly subtle yet brutal exploration of the titular character that reminds us why super hero movies can be fresh to this day -- because you can make them anything you want them to be.
3Black Sabbath
Paranoid

John Wick: Chapter 2: 5/5
While it lacks the directness of the original's story, Chapter 2 expands the world is visually stunning and unexpected ways, further expanding the narrative into more dangerous and complex territory. Even better than the first.
4Panic! At the Disco
Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!

Split: 4/5
A clever and surprisingly deep (and dark) blend of psychological thriller and horror from the director we all thought was long lost in a sea of unoriginality. A couple elements seemed unnecessary or a bit too explanatory, but overall I'm very impressed with Shyamalan's work lately.
5Avenged Sevenfold
Nightmare

Life: 4/5
While it doesn't get many points for originality, Life proves a worthy addition to the space/horror genre with impressive visuals and camerawork, as well as a smart, scientifically adept script. Thrown in a fantastic creature concept and some great acting, and you've got a winner as far as I'm concerned.
