03.20.17 | "there are so many things we have the privilege of experiencing that we couldn't if we weren't around."
the most obvious statement in the world, ever |
evilford
03.20.17 | but it's true and people don't realize it. I've spent time with people who didn't know this but learn this through hard times experienced. you may just not personally know the kind of emotional damage that type of realisation is connected with |
wham49
03.20.17 | I agree, but it just came across as funny, in its absurdity, teenage suicide I never did understand, they cannot see the big picture, that their "huge " problems are really minute and will pass quickly and painlessly if they let them |
evilford
03.20.17 | it seems like such an obvious point but there are negative states of mind in which you just can't see or understand that. and it definitely extends beyond teenage years as well. I've seen 40 and 50 year olds struggling with their own existence. it seems silly to people who aren't dealing with it but I've been there and it's really not to me
not coming down on you, just want to make sure people understand where I'm coming from |
Titan
03.20.17 | yeah....easier said than done |
wham49
03.20.17 | Trust me I have many issues in my life, but ending it, would be ridiculous and a pussy move to leave my responsibilities to someone else, becasue I could not hack it
an ex student of mine who was in my vinyl club, committed suicide last week, why? at 19, I know his family and brothers, it was not abusive , I know it is mental illness, but unless it comes from antidepressants, it is a conscious choice, never makes sense to me |
evilford
03.20.17 | "it is a conscious choice"
it's not that simple. I think you know that. do you know what it's like to be completely buried in darkness and despair with no foreseeable way out? that's what people who confront that choice deal with. they don't have a bad day and then just decide to off themselves. this struggle comes from a continual, involuntary erosion of sanity (pardon the reference but it fits best) over a length of time. |
Asdfp277
03.20.17 | it is a conscious choice affected by a dramatic shift in perception, a perspective most don't experience. It is indeed a choice, but not one without motives behind it |

03.20.17 | yes I do Evil, 2 diffentrent times in my life, and suicide never came into it thank god, It was a passing thought, with no real seriousness behind it. But I am going to sound very Republican rght now, but IMO it has something to do with everybody now getting a pat on the back and a trophy for showing up, never knowing what it is like to fail, because without ever understanding being down or not getting what you want,it is hard when it actually happens in real life, and you have no frame of reference on how to deal with it, That is why I am thankful for my life in sports. It taught me how to keep going even when there is no chance in winning, because to keep moving forward is winning, , and I am not trying being insensitive. trying to relay a mindset of survival, and persistance |
hal1ax
03.20.17 | @wham- you're misrepresenting and trivializing mental illness. "conscious choices" and perception for that matter, often become distorted and dilapidated to the point where people do seemingly illogical things--and of course they seems absurd and confusing to you, because it's happening from a vantage point which is foreign to you. maybe do some research and try to be more empathetic before tossing around "pussy move" etc. etc. |
evilford
03.20.17 | you're right that sounds very republican.
but you know what, I completely agree with you. I completely disagree with participation trophy culture. but that whole thing is a societal factor that the subject can't control. it does affect their outlook, motivations and beliefs. but I guess maybe I should have clarified but I'm talking about clinical depression, not whiny babies who want their participation trophies. I'm not sure that this culture has any relation to suicide rates, I guess I never thought about that. but whether you feel it's a "pussy move" or not is completely irrelevant to someone who's been struggling with severe clinical depression over an extended period of time and has had their hope eroded away to nothing for months or years. that isn't a choice, it's an involuntary mental illness. I understand where those people are coming from and I would like to try to be helpful and I just don't think that condemning their decision due to my own beliefs is helpful. |
KILL
03.20.17 | ?????? |
KILL
03.20.17 | ya depression is gay |
wham49
03.20.17 | I will say that I thought it would be a pussy move for ME, that is what got rid of it for ME, not others, sorry for the confusion.
I get that, not you KILL, but letting it persist and just accepting it will only lead to more of it, and I have researched it, I have 3 degrees and a masters in special education which has many classes in brain function and, psychology, sociology, brain dysfunction, and I am being empathetic,I work with kids who have these thoughts all day every day, to stroke somebody to say it is ok,, I know how you feel is ok to get them to open up, but then you need to shake up their comfort level that it is normal to think that way, they need to see that they are thinking irrationally, and try to get them to see the big picture , that is one of the ways to get them to break it. |
evilford
03.20.17 | "letting it persist and just accepting it will only lead to more of it"
yeah, I never said otherwise.
I'm sure you're a smart guy and you know what you're talking about. If you think it would be a "pussy move" for yourself, that's fine, completely valid, you are one with your own struggle. but you can't possibly fully understand someone else's struggle enough to classify their attempt to escape their despair as a "pussy move". I take issue with that mentality.
this may just be a fundamental disagreement that we'll never reach a conclusion on |
wham49
03.20.17 | we will leave it at that, I do not understand anybody else including myself, , but again I was only referring to myself when I said Pussy Move, because if i would take my life, because I hated myself, my daughter, wife, would have to deal and it would not be fair to them. |
evilford
03.20.17 | true, that makes sense. to be fair, I would have that same outlook for myself if I had those problems currently, which I don't. |
