| I'm making an ethnography essay about sputnikmusic
This is an assignment for my English class in the college. I need help from you guys for the interview, It'll be like a question that everyone can answer.. Ethnography: "the scientific description of the customs of individual peoples and cultures." (List is current digs) | | 1 | | Slowdive Souvlaki
I'm going to write pretty much about what kind of activity this community is doing, how do you guys communicate to each other, what kind of language are you guys using, and what kind of devices(such as memes or slangs) you guys use to interact. | | 2 | | Aimer Daydream
I'm also looking to write about the relationship you guys have amongst the users. Through shoutout, review comments, etc. | | 3 | | Coaltar of the Deepers Yukari Telepath
I'm also going to write about the noobs as well, how did you noobs integrate with the veteran sputnikers. And is there any special meme that you guys use to communicate, or special kind of "slang". | | 4 | | Stimming Alpe Lusia
And starting from now, I'm gonna ask for the questions. It's like an open interview where everyone can answer the questions. | | 5 | | Midori Aratame Hajime Mashite Midori Desu

02.26.17 | In case you are wondering, I'm 100% serious. | 50iL
02.26.17 | Fine, lemme help out.
1. Sput has been great. It has allowed me to discover pretty much all my fav bands and many bands I hadn't heard of before. It basically sky-rocketed my music discovery. I love the community and I don't really dislike anything about it.
2. As I said before, the community is great. Everyone is at the very least a cool guy/girl (except for a few exceptions).
3. Dunno lol
4. I mean, I don't think I have a "role". People who do normally have vast knowledge in their fav area of music.
5. A little bit of all of them.
6. Discovering music, if you could count that as being different from discussing. Otherwise, I pretty much only use it for that.
7. Too many favs to count. Most people are really truly awesome. Least fav would prob be PozerKiller tho, even though he's gone. He was just a toxic, militant, and elitist Metalhead and I don't like anyone that's a cunt. | Sinternet
02.26.17 | leaving it late huh? i'll help you out, i remember doing english projects for a level which were a bitch
1. I like the laidback, community side of it. It doesn't take itself (too) seriously and is quite close-knit. I dislike how it's not so welcoming to new people all the time.
2. Community is cool. Good mix of all different kinds of people (except the glaring gender bias visible) with widely varying opinions. Probably not great for people who can't take being roasted by everyone around them.
3. I have absolutely no idea to be honest, a lot of things people mention in this regard seem to have happened before i joined really. I'll say the most fun i've had was Random Discussion Thread. http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1054524&listid=168683 | Sinternet
02.26.17 | oops accidentally submitted early ill edit | CalculatingInfinity
02.26.17 | Posted to you on Discord :3 | Aberf
02.26.17 | Well, thanks for the responses so far. Love you ppl. | MarsKid
02.26.17 | 1. Personally has been great fun. I've been able to discuss music--something I can't do in real life--share my favorites and discover more stuff I probably never would have found on my own. Sometimes people are annoying but you get that anywhere honestly.
2. Can be pretty hard to get into since it's very close together and we have a very tough love way of interacting. We make fun of each other a lot and some people might see it too seriously. Overall, I appreciate being connected to the users I see frequently.
3. My highlight would probably be my First Fragment review since it was my first popular review and even got featured by the band. It was an honor to be so well-received and I appreciate everyone's support.
4. I don't know if I have any role really. Not sure how to answer this one.
5. I prefer discussing with users, whether we're debating over an album or just talking about why we love it so much. I love residing in album review threads and I hardly go on the actual forums. Sometimes I'll mess with people but not too much really.
6. Most likely improving my writing and finding new music. Both are very useful for me.
7. I really don't dislike anyone too too much. Sometimes people get on my nerves and get annoying, but I respect pretty much everyone here at the very least. | Rolling Girl
02.26.17 | A little curious as to why an you're writing an ethnography for english, but here you go.
1) It's not too bad, I'm not as active as some other users. I like how everyone can write and contribute to the database on here but I just wish the site didn't look 15 years old.
2) Aside from a few annoying users, the community seems pretty chill if you ask me.
3) Those runs were we get spammed by troll accounts kinda sucks. I don't have a link because all those lists get nuked.
4) I don't know if a "role" is the right word but it just seems like everyone discusses or write about music.
5) I mostly just lurk and browse. I occasionally discuss once in a while but I'm rarely ever the most active in discussion.
6) I do more "browsing" than "discussing". I usually just flip to sputnik every now and then like I would any other social media site.
7) I don't interact with enough people to make favorites, but I've seen plenty of cool things being said in and out of music related threads. I will give props to snide (Black Malachite) for doing what he does even everyone thinks he's a dumbass. | Drifter
02.26.17 | 1. I've had an almost completely positive experience with Sputnikmusic. Only a few times have people really shit on me.
2. My opinion of the community on general is I love it. All the differing tastes and personalities is beautiful
3. Soundoffs are some of the best things on this site tbh. Whether they're related to the actual music or not
4. I dont have a role, I just kinda hang out. People who do have roles generally do what they're supposed to well
5. Usually on here I discuss music, but occasionally I'll shit on people's taste
6. I do a lot of browsing/discovering/screenshotting recs from people that I will hopefully check eventually
7. I have a lot of users I would call favs. I love all the differing tastes and personalities like I said earlier | TVC15
02.26.17 | 1. I've always liked the site for finding new music (mostly cos I find it much easier to navigate than RYM) and also the stuff like pie charts, soundoffs and bumping favorite ones, digging albums and how they get to be displayed when you comment in reviews and news pages, and bar graphs for rating distribution in review pages are just really cool bonuses.
I guess something I don't like are the ads and when you amass a ton of ratings, the pie chart can become somewhat unrepresentative, especially because of how unreliable the genre tagging system is on this site.
2. I don't mind the community too much but that kind of really just depends on the type of threads/albums you frequent and the way how certain users will treat you and stuff.
3. Macman's lists, Hawk's Guide to BM list (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=269185&listid=163187), and several of Sach's lists that I can't be aresed to find right now because of how many accounts he has
Certain sound off pages which are hilarious and generally great to read (Yeezus and new Suicide Silence for instance)
4. Honestly I don't really know my role on this site, I just go and comment on threads where I feel compelled to, make lists that I feel like making. I'm on and off with my reviews mostly because of writer's block and how preoccupied I've become with school now.
I guess in terms of other users' roles, some users who are well educated in certain genres provide great insight into them (for the fuck of me I can't find the list where the user details the history of the first wave of black metal). Sach especially brings to light a lot of great albums from overlooked or unpopular genres in his lists
5. Combination of shitposting (something that I've tried a lot to abstain from) and just discussing the topic of whatever thread I enter
6. n/a
7. Sach's the user with the most influence on my taste so I have a special place in my heart for him (Screen Shotgate was also very amusing to watch unfold). I generally love Macman's lists and he's a chill guy when you communicate with him. FullofSouns, 50IL, ALA/TalktotheHead, DoofusWainright, ad nauseum are just chill guys to talk to. This question would just be a giant laundry list | Archelirion
02.26.17 | 1. My experience of Sputnikmusic has been generally a pretty good one – I wouldn’t have thought that, reading Lord Mantis reviews 3 years ago, I’d be a part of such a cool community. Occasionally some mass Sputdrama makes things a little bit of a pain in the arse, as do the temperamental servers, but the flexible database and userbase are awesome.
2. Overall, I like the community a lot. The odd member is needlessly acerbic and just a bit of a nuisance, but for the most part, I feel very strongly about the userbase – some of them I consider to be good friends, and for all the bickering it’s worth it for the good times.
3. Occasionally, someone posts review gold. See the following examples:
http://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/62677/Limp-Bizkit-Chocolate-Starfish-and-the-Hot-Dog.../
http://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/38954/Torsofuck-Erotic-Diarrhea-Fantasy/
http://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/27805/William-Control-Hate-Culture/
4. It’s kinda interesting how people embrace roles that they’ve either been given or created themselves. After a while people seem quite happy to stay in the position they’ve carved themselves, whether it’s deliberate or not.
5. Largely, I communicate with other users through other mediums, e.g. Dubtrack, Facebook, Discord on occasion. I enjoy discussing music on the site though I’m not particularly active in threads – with some notable exceptions. I’d like to think I don’t shitpost on Sputnik though, and to the best of my knowledge I’ve never been deliberately antagonistic towards another.
6. The odd conversation, but mostly again I’ll use another medium for that.
7. I have an awful lot of favourite users, but I won’t name anyone in case I forget them and then become sad. It’s pretty much if we’ve had a meaningful exchange, Dubtrack’d/Plug’d with each other, or just generally aren’t a complete cockwomble then I probably have good things to say about them.
Least favourite user is that AaronIsCrunchy dillweed.

02.26.17 | Cool stuff Aberf. You better get a 100% or else. Anyway
1. Love this site to death. I like the community and dislike how negative this place can get.
2. It's mostly great. Lots of different personalities and music tastes and I like how relatively small it is, so everyone knows each other.
3. "Fires up the neurons"
4. I guess I don't have a role. I just talk about music and all that good stuff.
5. All of those
6. Finding music and talking about mundane things in life (the casual food threads are the best)
7. I have a lot of favorite users cuz you're all dope | Frippertronics
02.26.17 | 1. I enjoy coming here although some people really, really either take things too seriously or just have no idea on how to handle themselves. This is miniscule if we factor in the reality that Sputnik is incredibly outdated and could use another overhaul (since the last one, back in 2013, helped the site progress from a "wild west dial-up era" look to a "mid 2000s forum" look, if you catch my drift.
2. The people on Sputnik are, for the most, part cool. Again, a few people who tend to contribute nothing of value and add nothing to the experience, but what does that matter in the long run?
3. In text: "nicer dicer" / Visual: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InPKr6RwKps
4. I just want to write and talk to people about music. Simple really.
5. It tends to vary on how I feel, but I usually just mess around but try to mix it up with actual discussion. I do have a habit of being a total stickler sometimes towards certain users, who may or may not deserve it.
6. Dunno man, what's the point of going on a music website if you're NOT going to talk about music? It's like going to a BBQ restaurant and asking for the vegan options.
7. I like me. I like you. I like whoever wants to be liked. Pour one out for the lost boys. Come home soon, Deviant. | danielito19
02.27.17 | 1 and 2. I really only use sputnik for the community, while there are a lot of terrible users on the site this is the only place I feel like I can actually talk to people about music. RYM feels like a bunch of people talking to themselves while sput is more like a bar where everyone is screaming at each other for liking deathcore or not liking the newest Opeth
3. both reviews and lists honestly. There are too many great examples of each to really list, but sput's great for both serious and hilarious reviews, like the christian coffee shop review and kill's peripjhery review, and i've discovered loads of music from users who post lists of like 100 post-hardcore records
4. i'm a pretty bad user, i get baited by the trolly types way too easy and i think this makes me a target.
5. i think i have a pretty even 50/50 mix of shitposting and actual music discussion
6. talking to the friends i've made on here about pretty much anything. i usually dip out of threads once sports come up though.
7. i've been working on a fav users list but in short: ffs, alachlahol, qwe3, satellite, hyperion, ocean of noise, relinquished. least fav users are futures, torts, sach, lamsbread/hillaryclittounge. sach and futures are the worst though, they would just copy a (admittedly dumb) comment i made months ago and then just post it in every thread i ever posted in. |
