Dedes 02.15.17	You really do have to ease yourself into more extreme metal, hell even Pantera, Slipknot, maybe the more tame metalcore like Killswitch Engage are good starts. It's mostly just the harsh vocals that turn people off. When I was 14 I thought Cowboys from Hell by Pantera was far too extreme, now look where I am lol.

Instead start with hard rock (Deep Purple, Budgie, and Uriah Heep) and heavy metal (Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio). Also, don't be ashamed to check out the gateway genres like metalcore, nu metal, post-grunge, and blackgaze. Of the ones your friend told you to check out, Carcass, Anthrax, and Woods of Ypres will be the most accessible.

Listening to 1 album for each metal genre would much more productive to understand what you can get into more easily ( and that you like more) instead of having mostly 20 albums of death metal and black metak. I love metal but I don't really like death metal in particular and this list would have been a huge turn off for me as a noob

Wrong Sepultura album, jam one of their first 4 4. Im sure its already been mentioned but im too lazy to read the thread, 19 isnt metal at all. Listen to their Bergtatt album instead.

I've been friends with him since high school, I've been trying my best to get him into more extreme metal ever since. So this list is a combination of personal taste and accessibility. He asked for essential extreme metal albums, so naturally I couldn't put just 5 in a list. So instead of finding the most niche metal, I went for albums that I thought were better to go with straight forward genres than go for something like blackened shoegaze.

bloc 02.16.17	Despite it being one of the best albums ever and super popular and all that shit, I never thought RIP was a good entry point for thrash/metal. Dave's voice is a bit of an acquired taste and the super technicality of the album isn't too indicative of traditional thrash. Metallica is a much better starting point.
