01.14.17 | Ask and you shall receive! Be forewarned, in terms of albums I'm more familiar with relatively recent stuff and a lot of what I like is more alt-country/Americana as opposed to straight up country but I have a pretty solid knowledge of who the classic country acts are across the years.
For classic country:
-Townes Van Zandt I understand is pretty essential even though I've only heard a handful of his songs.
-Willie Nelson, for an album try Phases & Stages but I'm sure a greatest hits comp won't hurt either
-Merle Haggard, again not sure on specific albums but a compilation should suffice, I have his Down Every Road comp but it's kind of massive and I'm blanking on specific songs atm
-Waylon Jennings - Dreaming My Dreams
-Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison is essential, only heard it a handful of times myself though
-Hank Williams - 40 Greatest Hits
For some of the more recent (as in 90s to present) alt-country styled stuff:
-Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
-Sturgill Simpson (nice one Full), Metamodern Sounds In Country Music is a bit closer to classic country in the songwriting, A Sailor's Guide to Earth (my 2016 AOTY) explores soul a bit more and is a bit more accessible to non country fans
-Uncle Tupelo - No Depression (the quintessential alt-country album, if not necessarily one of the best)
-Guy Clark - Dublin Blues
-Steve Earle - El Corazon
-Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
-The Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall
Ok that's far from a comprehensive list, some of these are more personal favorites and sorry for my lack of specific knowledge of the older classics. Also I steered away from mainstream modern country because it mostly sucks but if that's the kind you want...sorry I can't help ya |

01.14.17 | I prefer Cash's At San Quentin but Folsom Prison is great as well. Also Tom Wait's Mule Variations is a great experimental alt-country album as well |
theBoneyKing
01.14.17 | Some good recs there too Dominion and Johnny, haven't heard of that Clint Black album myself but since you both recommended it it must be essential, I'll add it to my personal to check lists. |

01.14.17 | @ Dewinged
I remember that being good but if I recall they were all pretty faithful covers (acoustic guitars, hushed vocals) and you can defintely do heavy metal covers of Townes' songs without it coming off too cheesy. I would have preferred something more like this Walkabouts cover of "Snake Mountain Blues":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDxAg250sHk
sadly they puss out and skip this verse:
Love of blackskin woman

If you haven't guessed my rec is Townes Van Zandt - Townes Van Zandt |
MillionDead
01.14.17 | Townes IS really lit. Try Eric Strickland and the B-sides. Chet Atkins too. Also Ian & Sylvia's album Early Morning Rain is fucking essential, which it isn't listed on this site, but it damn well should be. |
theBoneyKing
01.14.17 | Haha Jamie, I mean yeah I love country but I wouldn't call myself an expert per se. I know what the good stuff is, I just haven't necessarily gotten to it all over the course of my exploring. I also generally prefer alt-country to straight-up country in general. |
NeroCorleone80
01.14.17 | How has no one mentioned Will Oldham |
JamieTwort
01.14.17 | Just to clarify, that wasn't a dig at you at all, Boney (not that you seemed to take it that way anyway), just me being enthusiastic about what I consider the most essential country album. |
theBoneyKing
01.14.17 | Oh yeah you're right, I didn't take that as a dig at all.
Nero, I've still only heard I See a Darkness but judging on that Oldham's songwriting isn't quite traditionally country enough for it to be a good choice for this sort of list. |
