Generic Year End List: Who Gives A Fuck Edition

You know the drill. I make a list, you say I have shit taste. Since I put forth the effort to make this list might as well see it get lost in the sea of other list. Enjoy, or don't. Whatever you wish. Just remember, I suck at explaining why I like things.
1The Dear Hunter
Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional

(Progressive Indie Rock/Swing/Jazz/Classical/I don't know)
There are just some albums that are so musically expansive, that they transcend into levels of perfection. This is one such album. This is one of the best examples of storytelling through music I've ever seen. I truly Believe Casey Crescenzo is one of the most talented and daring artists of our time. 4.8/5
2PUP
The Dream Is Over

(Pop Punk)
This album is one of the most juvenile and fun albums I've heard all year. I truly enjoyed the fact that I got to hear a pop-punk album with actual punk influences. Everything from the carefree attitude to the witty lyrics make this album a joy to listen to. 4.7/5
3The Dillinger Escape Plan
Dissociation

(Mathcore)
While I am a newbie when it comes to TDEP, I feel fairly confident in saying that this is their best album. Greg is the best he's ever sounded, and the chaotic and mellow parts of the album meld together seamlessly. I don't think the band could've done a better job at going out on a high note. 4.6/5
4Touche Amore
Stage Four

(Screamo/Melodic Hardcore)
I think this is probably the most emotional album of the year. Every track hits like a fucking freight train. I won't go into what inspired the writing of this album, because I think the album does that it's self. Some of the lyrics on this album are so personal and so heart-wrenching, that it honestly makes you almost uncomfortable. 4.6/5
5Be'lakor
Vessels

(Melodic Death Metal)
It's weird that an album that's 55 minutes long could be described as concise, but hey, what are you gonna do? Since 2016 was my first venture into Melodeath, it's only fitting that the album that started it would be my favorite of the year. This album just ebbs and flows so well, it's weirdly relaxing. Also, the album cover has batman, who doesn't love that. 4.6/5
6Artifex Pereo
Passengers

(Post-hardcore)
The frustrating thing about this album is, I don't know why I like it as much as I do. I mean, yes the vocals, musicianship, and lyrics are good, but unlike most other albums on this list, there isn't a real emotional connection to any of it. It's just so well done, it kind of deserves to be this high, I guess? I don't know, it's good, let's just leave it at that. 4.6/5
7Tiny Moving Parts
Celebrate

(Emo)
How to best describe this album? How about self-loathing. Strip the album of it's twinkly, mathy guitars and killer drums, and that's what we've got. a random dude whining about his problems. Huh, maybe that's why it's so relatable. We've all been there. 4.5/5
8Kings Kaleidoscope
Beyond Control

(Indie Rock/Gospel)
I seriously have no idea how a worship album made it on this list. Oh yeah, I do, it sounds like it was made by actual people instead of a focus group. That's what I like about this album it's messy, it's human, and above all, it's honest. It also adds gospel influences without being annoying, but that's the important part. Unfortunately the guy says fucking on one song, so most people who buy worship music will just skip over it. Fucking idiots. 4.4/5
9Zao
The Well-Intentioned Virus

(Metalcore)
This one came in right at the end of the year, so it's placement is a little less concrete. Still though, it's an outstanding record. The not-so-christian pioneers of christian metalcore have done it yet again. After all these years Scott and the rest of the band are still making some of the most well crafted metalcore around. Of course, as always, Dan sounds like a caged wild animal while tackeling topics that I haven't really seen other bands talking about (eastern philosophy is a little out of most risecore band's depth). 4.4/5
10Norma Jean
Polar Similar

(Metalcore)
It's rare that a band's seventh album be their best, or their most experimental, but Norma Jean don't conform to your standards. This is a genuinely pissed album, even if it's a little vague on what it's pissed off about. One thing that this album reminded me of, Corey Brandon is one hell of a vocalist, and this is his best vocal performance to date. Add in some grooves and some Tool influence in the musicianship, and youv'e got yourself a top 10 album right there. 4.3/5
11Saosin
Along the Shadow

(Post-hardcore)
Yeah I don't care what anyone says, this album is awesome, it's also the best album Saosin have ever done. Anthony and the rest of the band have never sounded as tight and earnest as they do on this album. It's also way more interesting than anything Circa have done in quite a while. My only gripe is that two of the best songs are bonus tracks. I blame Beau Burchell for that idiotic move. 4.2/5
12The Fall of Troy
OK

(post-hardcore)
like with 11, I think this is the tightest this band has ever sounded, possibly barring Doppelganger. Thomas and Tim sound great, it sucks that Tim is, once again, no longer with the band. I would complain about the production, but I've grown to like it. Call it Stockholm Syndrome I guess. 4.2/5
13Hail the Sun
Culture Scars

It's kind of amazing that the same man who contributed vocals to the musical xanex that was Sianvar's debut album, made this album. While not quite as good as Wake, I think Culture Scars did a good job showing the band going in a slightly mellower sound. It still has it's agression, but it feels more restrained this time around. While some people harp on the lyrics, I think they do a fine job conveying their respective emotions/topics. 4.1/5
14Polyenso
Pure In The Plastic

(R&B/Pop)
This album makes you want to go to sleep, but in a good way. it's just so damn relaxing, that is covers you like a warm blanket. This isn't usually my thing, but you got to give it to them, they make a damn fine pop record. Beats what they were doing as a metalcore band, that's for sure. 4/5
15Meshuggah
The Violent Sleep of Reason

(Progressive Metal/Thrash Metal)
With so much shitty djent that has come out over the years, it's nice to get the original recipe bad at work. I can't really say anything that hasn't already been said about this band. They've got their sound down to an art form at this point. It's a great album, you should listen to it. You probably already have, so yeah, end of discussion. 3.9/5
