The Strokes: A Controversial Ranking

You know the drill by now: I put up opinion, some get angry, some defend it, all are somewhat amused.
5The Strokes
Room on Fire

A bland, watered-down version of Is This It, Room on Fire doesn't really add anything new to the table. Every song would've fit easily on the previous record, albeit with a much more uninspired sound and quality. The lone bright spot is "Reptilia," which oddly enough hits just the right blend of incredible riffs and endless energy, and might be the best track of their entire career.
4The Strokes
Is This It

I might jam to this album if it was on, but I don't understand the wide-ranging acclaim. There are a few great tracks off of here, especially "Alone, Together" which simply just work as a combination of tight riffs and punk energy, but there's not enough variety here to make me much of a fan. I don't get the originality or excitement that this album caused, but I'd never fault someone for loving it.
3The Strokes
First Impressions of Earth

A far cry from the tired follow-up that was Room on Fire, First Impressions of Earth takes their trademark sound and builds upon it, adding new sounds and a more diverse soundscape to appeal to the fans of their older stuff and people like me who were desperately looking for new ideas. It might not be vastly superior to their previous efforts, but I'd gladly add this album to my collection someday, especially with riveting tracks like "Juicebox" and "Ize of the World."
2The Strokes
Comedown Machine

An album that would have worked as a natural transition to Angles from their previous works, Comedown Machine fuses electronic touches to the riffs and sister distortion to the energy, forming what might be their most varied and organic album period. From the eerie ballad "80s Comedown Machine" to the rip-roaring jam of "50/50," there's a little bit of everything here for those looking for old and new.
1The Strokes
Angles

Where First Impressions grew on their sound, Angles threw it away and replaced it with a much more eclectic and menacing outlook. Rife with explosive riffs ("Metabolism") and downright creepy atmosphere ("Life Is Simple in the Moonlight"), it's bound to piss off the die-hard fans of the first two albums. But that might just be why a lover of the strange and diverse like myself would fall in love with it.
