12.13.16 | I am for Detroit, the stooges Mc5, and Death all released before (75) are so influential and early that I think it is the Motor city |
Snake.

12.13.16 | the stooges were probably the first to evolve psych rock to something rawer that would fit the punk tag |

12.13.16 | London is 'punk' everything else is pure rock n roll and all the bettter for it.
The only UK challenger to the US 'rock' wise is Birmingham. |
Frippertronics
12.13.16 | stooges/mc5/suicide and the like |
StallionMang
12.13.16 | ill go ny cuz velvets, ramones & cbgbs |
guitarded_chuck
12.13.16 | @z dead kennedys? ramones? minor threat? misfits? black flag? bad religion? |
zakalwe
12.13.16 | The main factor in that one chuck dude is the ramones. They really were the influence for what came after but if you're looking for a movement it's Pistols, Clash, The Damned, and the trillions that followed.
New York Dolls were probabaly even a bigger influence tbh. |
zakalwe
12.13.16 | And when it comes to 'Punk' this really is the thing. It's just a 'brand' the UK had 'movements' that were forever labelled.
The 'punk' attitude was in London in the late 60s early 70s with the skinheads who cut their hair short in a rebellion to what was happening while listening to ska (proper fucking ska) and it all just evolved naturally from that and the cess pool that was 70s London.
People subjugate it and label it and bastardise it. The yanks are fucking spectacular at that. |
guitarded_chuck
12.13.16 | i see what youre saying z
wish i could take a time machine back to 70s london, would be wild |
Risodo
12.13.16 | Nickelback |
wham49
12.13.16 | The movement yes probably London, but the influence of the movement I am looking at, they all loved the stooges and MC5 and were musically influential to the early London punk MUSIC |
worthlessscab
12.13.16 | Chuck Berry |
ArsMoriendi
12.13.16 | Not the fucking Sex Pistols, that all I know
Probably some guy we've never heard from New York in the mid 70s, unless you wanna argue that protopunk is punk |
wham49
12.13.16 | and I would say that Death was the earliest true sounding punk band 73-74 with their single Politicians in their eys, with all the elements.
I actually read a book entitled London's Burning: on the front lines of the punk movement where he cited Patti Smith performing in London around 74 as the start of the movement in London, anybody else heard that. |
ArsMoriendi
12.13.16 | Patti Smith works, her, the No New York bands and others from that scene likely
|
wham49
12.13.16 | actually ARS I am arguing that it was the late 60's early 70's hard rock movement in Detroit, not the spiked hair, but the attitude, politically charged lyrics and F you attitude of those bands |
budgie
12.13.16 | r a m o n e s |
wham49
12.13.16 | well they had the first LP of completely identifiable punk |
ArsMoriendi
12.13.16 | "not the spiked hair"
This doesn't describe Patti Smith or no wave bands at all |

12.13.16 | @wham thats my own understanding of the question
ofc the culture predates them |
ZippaThaRippa
12.13.16 | Snake already did that joke like 20 comments ago |
ArsMoriendi
12.13.16 | " he cited Patti Smith performing in London around 74 as the start of the movement in London"
You do realize that while Smith may have preformed in London that she's a New Yorker and from the NY scene? |
wham49
12.13.16 | yes ARS I realizee that, was just making a case for all, this author, a famous Rock critic lived in London during this time, his name escapes me, and I would say the culture was not that much ahead of the sound, actually my main argument is that the sound way outdates the fashion and culture of London,
sound: Detroit
attitude: NY
fashion/lifestyle: London
the inclusion of VU always escapes me, not sure how they fit in, not the sound somewhat the attitude, I know Lou is looked at as the original punk, but I am not so sure
also, maybe the hippies were the original punks, or at least an inspiration for the kind of defiant group against all the norms of a culture
that is were the 13th floor elevators and other garage rock come in |
ArsMoriendi
12.13.16 | I guess that works, though it makes London look the least important |
Snake.
12.13.16 | nvm |
wham49
12.13.16 | well if it makes you feel better ARS, i would say London has the bulk of the great punk bands, and generally people think of London when they think of punk, for the most part, they also have the best metal bands and 60's psych and pop bands, and the best new wave,, and their own NWOBHM so they can come in last in one historic music movement. |
ArsMoriendi
12.13.16 | You keep calling me ARS, so should I call you WHAM? |
wham49
12.13.16 | ya that is fine, what SHOULD I call you?
I did it as a quick way yo refer to you |
ArsMoriendi
12.13.16 | You can call me ARS instead of Ars, but just know that I'll be referring to you as WHAM instead of Wham if you do so |
wham49
12.13.16 | ok, maybe we should go with A.R.S, and W.H.A.M LOL
I am very liberal with capitals and lower case so it is whatever comes out in the moment, I will be more aware |
ArsMoriendi
12.13.16 | That makes me think of the shitty hair metal band W.A.S.P. |
hal1ax
12.13.16 | good charlotte |

12.13.16 | Waterparks |
ArsMoriendi
12.13.16 | I have in fact heard Stray Cat Blues, if we're going with British Invasion Bands, You Really got Me by The Kinks is older and punkier and more influential |
zakalwe
12.13.16 | Ello dude. You understand it son. Give it 20yrs and someone will actually throw it in there as a valid point because everything is 'subjective' |
zakalwe
12.13.16 | I know it's outrageous but 70s punk is......
Who the fuckin is 'ell is this?
"It's a coon."
"I ain't avin it"
Everyone else deals with it.

05.17.17 | Fun House was arguably the world going through its first real punk phase. |
wham49
05.17.17 | watch Gimme Danger the Stooges doc on Amazon video, jiggly, very good, almost how all great bands form, friends first, then music later, a band before they could play
pretty much why the Ramones became a band |
butcherboy
05.17.17 | Richard Hell...... answered |
JigglyPDiddy
05.17.17 | Fun House is just such a punk album. Don't get me wrong I think their debut rules, but Fun House was the band saying "Fuck you. We want to sound as raw as our peanut-butter/heroin tinged live shows." Iggy went bonkers here. |
wham49
05.17.17 | at the end of the tour they were all sleeping on there parents couches broke and heroin addicted, lets you know how badass the tour was LOL |
Fort23
