| Things to Look Forward to in 2017
2016 was a great year, imo. A lot of things from the last few months have hinted at some great potential for 2017, rumors abound. So here's what might make the first year of Trump not so bad... let me know what you're excited about! | 1 | | Ride Tarantula
Undoubtedly one of my most anticipated albums ever. I caught Ride last year in Atlanta and they were spectacular. If they use that energy, I could see this being my AOTY. Swervedriver came back in 2015 with a solid album, and Ride is (mostly) a better shoegaze band, so here's hoping. Predicted release: Q2 or Q3 | 2 | | The Jesus and Mary Chain Munki
JAMC toured in 2015-16 behind the Psychocandy 30th anniversary and they were phenomenal live. Such energy and potency that a return, as stated by them, to the studio could produce stellar results. Munki wasn't that great though, but to be fair, there was so much turmoil in the band at the time, now that they are all on the same page, maybe we'll get something truly memorable. Predicted Release: Q2 | 3 | | Spiritualized Sweet Heart Sweet Light
Jason Pierce's last album for Spiritualized is coming in 2017. With no terrible album under his belt yet, I expect this to be a solid finale to a great career. Predicted Release: Q1 | 4 | | Japandroids Near to the Wild Heart of Life
I love Celebration Rock and Post-Nothing, though I must admit my adoration for them has waned over time. I at once put Celebration Rock at no 1 for 2012 but it's slipped from that spot. Japandroids are great for rolicking fun, but the new single left much to be desired. Of course, I'm older now, and eventually even the most endearing Replacements tributes can overstay their welcome. Here's hoping its just as fun as the last two. Confirmed Release: January 27th | 5 | | Priests Nothing Feels Natural
Priests are a great gutteral punk band that just evokes so much head banging from me. Their EP from 2014 is wickedly good, and the first few tracks from their debut album have been great. Eagerly anticipating this one. Confirmed Release: January 27th | 6 | | Slowdive Pygmalion
22 years since their last release, and on the same day as Ride being confirmed for releasing an album in 2017, Slowdive cryptically posted a photo to instagram of a record. New material? They've toured! So let's hope for some more. 2017 may just be the year of a true shoegaze revival. Predicted Release: Q3 | 7 | | Spoon They Want My Soul
Since they wrapped up touring in 2015 for TWMS, Austin's greatest indie rock powerhouses have been quiet. It's been three years since that excellent album, so methinks its time for a swan song or at least another solid album in a strong career. Predicted Release: Q3 | 8 | | Swirlies They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days
Another hinted at return, the noise rock/shoegaze band has been dropping singles ever so often, and have hinted at more to come in 2017. Not a large career built off of the small catalog but a devout following proves there's definitely someone out there still listening (raises hand). Predicted release: Q3 | 9 | | The xx I See You
I still adore their first album, but the second one left me kind of iffy. First single from this didn't grab me either, and I haven't really cared for Jamie xx's solo work either. But the prospect of them touring is always good, and at the very least it's something to look forward to. Still, that first record... fire. Confirmed Release: January 27th | 10 | | King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Flying Microtonal Banana
One of the under the radar releases of 2016, but King Gizzard has taken a sound that I've come to enjoy from such counterparts as Black Mountain and even a bit of Tame Impala and churned out surprisingly better psych rock than the other two in their infancy. With 5 albums set for 2017, I think we'll be seeing a lot of these guys on the year end lists a year from now. Confirmed Release: February 24th | 11 | | Tool 10,000 Days
I'll keep putting this on the lists until the day it comes out. Will it? Who knows? APC just announced some festival dates, so....? Never? Predicted Release: 2020. | 12 | | A Perfect Circle Thirteenth Step
100% purely speculative on my part, but with little from Tool, a few tour dates from APC, and of those two only APC has released a sliver of new music in the last decade (not counting the instrumental during Tool's 2016 dates). "By and Down" was an awesome song, so maybe it's a hint at things to come? Wishful thinking probably. Predicted Release: Q4 | 13 | | Fleet Foxes Helplessness Blues
They've said it's coming in 2017 with a world tour. But after 6 years, are they still going to be any good? Their brand of folk rock has become something of annoyance these days with multiple transparent bands with the same sound saturating the radiowaves. Maybe they'll pull off a miracle, I'll listen regardless. Predicted Release: Q2 | 14 | | Car Seat Headrest Teens of Denial
To cap off a breakout year for Will Toledo, he's spending the rest of 2016 recording in Chicago. I love Teens of Denial, but is another album a good idea? Who gives a shit, bring it on. He's released like 8 albums in the last 5 years, I think we can handle it. Predicted Release: Q2 | 15 | | Wolf Parade EP 4
Surprise EP last summer was decent, but they've been showing off some recording studio pictures lately so i'm guessing an album in 2017. Bout time. Predicted Release: Q2 | 16 | | No Age An Object
I still like An Object, though it's definitely their weakest. At once at the forefront of the noise rock boom in 2008, No Age faded into the background in favor of a DIY approach. I still love this band, and their singles from 2016 were great. It's been over 3 years since their last one, so it's probably time to bring them back. Predicted Release: Q2 | 17 | | Atlas Sound Parallax
I love Deerhunter and everything associated with it. But after Fading Frontier's pop drift, i'm getting a little tired of them (omg i know). When I caught them in 2015 on tour, Bradford opened with Atlas Sound material that was unreleased and it was fire. I hope he takes the time to drop another album under his solo moniker before they head back into the studio. It's usually been a good thing for him. Predicted Release: Q3 | 18 | | Hop Along Painted Shut
After their breakout album from 2015, I expected to hear something from them this year. I managed to catch them in Chicago w/ Speedy Ortiz and was blown away by their live performance - which included a very true to heart cover of Nirvana's "Sappy." Predicted Release: Q2 | 19 | | P.S. Eliot Sadie
Waxahatchee and Swearin are good in their own right. But while Waxahatchee bored me with her last album, and Swearin is on hiatus, the Crutchfield sisters released a collection of PS Eliot material, and did a brief tour. Since their breakup, they've grown, so a reunion could provide some great results. Predicted Release: Q2. | 20 | | Lantlos Melting Sun
I checked their Facebook a few weeks ago and saw a hint at the new album with a working title (posted in early 2016). So I'd expect to see the follow up to their wonderful 2014 album coming very soon. Predicted Release: Q2 | 21 | | St. Vincent St. Vincent
Annie usually goes in 3 year cycles, and it'll be 3 years in February since the self titled, which was very good. She's blown up a lot since then, so the next album may very well be her crossover to mainstream indie darling, if she already isn't considered that by many. Predicted Release: Q2 | 22 | | Sharon Van Etten Are We There
Are We There was 3 years ago? Dang. She dropped an EP this year I think, so it seems about right for her to come back since she does the 3 year album loop like Annie Clark. Predicted Release: Q2 | 23 | | Strand of Oaks Heal
More of that folk pop rock that we hear so often, but I did enjoy Heal quite a bit back in 2014. His new single is listenable, but not my favorite. I guess we'll find out in a few months. Confirmed Release: February 17th | 24 | | The National Trouble Will Find Me
Why so far down on the list? Well, I do like The National (it took awhile), but after their last few experiments, I haven't been eagerly awaiting new material. They are starting to feel like Wilco in a lot of ways. But there's no denying their catalog, it's full of great albums and songs. Predicted Release: Q3 | 25 | | Arctic Monkeys AM
I love the Monkeys, all of their albums mostly (Suck It and See was kinda meh). I'm not overly excited about it, just because I don't know where else they can take their sound, but AM was a lot better than I expected it to be. I'm always going to head into it with an open mind, but I would be lying if I said I didn't miss the "Whatever" days. Predicted Release: Q3 | 26 | | Grizzly Bear Shields
My favorite album of 2012. And it's... been 5 years? Wow. This would be higher except I haven't heard anything concrete, it's mostly been politics from their social media. I hope to see them return, as they are really a great band. Predicted Release: Q3 | 27 | | Dirty Projectors Swing Lo Magellan
I loved Swing Lo Magellan. David Longstreth had an interest 2016 showing up on Solange's album, and also dropping a peculiar new single from the Projectors that I found unlistenable. Maybe it's nothing like the new material, but I'm frightful regardless. Predicted Release: Q2 | 28 | | Real Estate Atlas
Atlas was in my opinion their weakest yet. Days is their best to me, but Atlas just felt like a continuation of Days but with more pop. I think this band is heading the direction of a folk pop band, ala The Lumineers. Still, the great moments of Atlas were enough to keep me as a fan of them so hopefully the next one's not too much of a departure. Predicted Release: Q1 | 29 | | Arcade Fire Reflektor
What can I say that hasn't already been said? Reflektor was a mixed bag of a good to great songs with some down right atrocities. But again, the highs were high, and their 2013 tour was incredible. I will always be fond of The Suburbs, but it will be interesting to see where they go next. Predicted Release: Q3 | |

12.08.16 | Menzingers | Royl123
12.08.16 | Good good list | portableheadd
12.09.16 | DMST have revealed that they have new material as well as a track list for the album, so that tops it for me. All else is comparatively unnecessary in the year DMST return. Except for the new Daughters album, which trumps DMST.
Also saw that Horse the Band were working on something, which is very exciting. New Pelican, RLYR's debut and new Gigan are also making me hope I don't die next year.
Is new No Age confirmed or are you just speculating since it's been so long since the last one? |
