Green Day: A Controversial Ranking

The time has come: a completely undefinitive and wholly subjective ranking of the famed punk-rock band. This is my girlfriend's favorite band, and even though I'm not a fan of punk (as you can tell by my order), I still found a lot to enjoy throughout their varied career.

Insomniac

Take all the problems I have with Dookie and subtract the catchy songs and good humor, and you'd have this album. It's not that I dislike it per say, it's just hard to sit through in its entirety. "Brain Stew" is absolutely great though, with a fantastic riff and startling turns, it foreshadows a harder rock edge in Green Day's future.
11Green Day
39/Smooth

One of those album that's a blast the first time but gets harder and harder to listen to the more times you try. There's some amazing energy and rhythm here, but the production and repetitiveness gets grating before long.

¡UNO!

Bland, fun, uninspired, catchy, frustrating, and groovy, iUno! is an album of generally mixed feelings. I wouldn't be too ashamed to spin this one day, but I can't imagine listening to the whole thing in one sitting again without being annoyed by all the rip-offs of their own material. "Nuclear Family" and "Troublemaker" are really good though, despite having many of the problems I previously. described
9Green Day
Dookie

I know, I know, it's heresy to put this so low, but like I said, I'm not a huge fan of straight up punk. The album just seems to be very one note and repetitive in places, to the point where I often couldn't tell you what song I was listening to if you put it on random. That being said however, the album is slowly growing on me as I delve further into punk music, so it's not hard to imagine this quickly moving up my list in the near future.

Kerplunk

The best album of the early punk days of Green Day, Kerplunk shows some signs of maturity from the band in the lovely "No One Knows" and shows a variety of the musicianship that won't be seen again until Nimrod. The lyrics on this one are pretty great too.

iDOS!

Okay, I know I'm gonna get some shit for this one, but I really feel that this one isn't nearly as bad as it's made out to be. Sure, some tracks are completely unoriginal and uninspired, but of all the albums of the trilogy, this one best represents all the different shades of Green Day. From punk to pop to punk, a great deal of the songs are good, if not great listens. It has obvious faults, but I simply enjoy this album.
6Green Day
iTRE!

Undoubtedly the best of the trilogy, iTre! bumps up the chill and lets the restless freak-outs settle. The most musically mature album they made for a long while, iTre! is a enjoyable and very solid excursion for the band, even if its not an album I'd rush out to buy. Also, "X-Kid" is gorgeous.
5Green Day
Nimrod

Blasting all expectations, Green Day make a punk rock album with a vicious bite and overt playfulness that remains engaging and fun no matter what genre they get their hands on. From ska to hardcore to acoustic ditties and surf rock, the farther from their roots they go, the more invigorating the song gets. I think they realized this, and the album heralded the end of punk-based Green Day.
4Green Day
Warning

Deftly combining folk and punk, Warning seems like a hard pill to swallow but ultimately features some of the most listenable music Green Day's put to song. Songs like "Minority" and "Macy's Day Parade" hint at the future rock-oriented brilliance to come, and even the lesser songs off of this one are still funky and fun regardless of their occasional repetitiveness.
3Green Day
21st Century Breakdown

A vastly underrated album, 21st Century Breakdown finds Green Day at their most experimental, and while it's certainly uneven, the 2nd Act of this rock opera contains some of the very best songs Green Day has ever written. There's something here for everyone, and if you're a fan of a little bit of everything, then you'll certainly be at home here.
2Green Day
Revolution Radio

Their newest album follows in similar footsteps of American Idiot, but this time combining it with much more visible punk influences. "Bang Bang" absolutely crushes, and the many scorching political tracks may come to foreshadow the possible oppression of the Trump-era. Equally safe and risky, Green Day have never sounded more solid and comfortable jumping around genres than with this record.
1Green Day
American Idiot

While not musically revolutionary, Green Day defined the voice of a frustrated generation and took the daring step toward making a full-fledged rock album. The music here is inventive, clever, and varied, and contain the best lyrics Billie Joe Armstrong has ever written. "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is absolutely incredible, and "Whatsername" hits me in the feels every time. Even with a slightly uninteresting middle section, American Idiot is an absolute classic of modern rock.
