10.26.16 | I really want to watch the Evil Dead films, but they're never on tv, and they're not on any streaming services I have. I know that I'd love them. Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and buy them already. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | Dude fucking watch the Evil Dead films. Buy them on Blu-Ray. You're welcome. |
Danred97
10.26.16 | Oh, I plan to. I also plan on watching Ash vs The Evil Dead. That show looks phenomenal based off what I've seen/heard.
I think I actually did watch Army of Darkness once when I was younger. Since I didn't know it was part of a franchise, I was fucking confused. It was still weirdly enjoyable though. |
calmrose
10.26.16 | solid list, I found 30 to be really underwhelming though, didn't really care for it, I'd put House of the Devil on this list, that's been one of my favorite horror films recently, also The Birds, if you consider that a horror film |
spookynewghostfriend
10.26.16 | american werewolf in london smh |
FullOfSounds
10.26.16 | I'm just happy Halloween is so high |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | @Danred - Yes! That show is hilarious/awesome and the best part of every Sunday. Army is so much better after seeing Ash's evolution.
@Calmrose- I would also put House of the Devil there lol, totally forgot about that one. I love Drag Me To Hell, but yeah House of the Devil is better. |
Shadowmire
10.26.16 | props for two sisters |
Danred97
10.26.16 | As far as recommendations go, I'd go with Black Cat. It's an old Universal film, so it's more based on an uneasy atmosphere than scares, but I adore it. It stars Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, so you know it's got some good acting. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | Thanks man, I'll have to check it out.
And yeah, Two Sisters rules hard |
GeorgeWBush
10.26.16 | You're entitled to your opinion, but I prefer The Shining to The Shinning, and it's my personal favourite. Alien is my second. I found The Silence of the Lambs to be kind of underwhelming. Been meaning to watch Evil Dead. |
Shadowmire
10.26.16 | lol |
Yep321
10.26.16 | list needs Henry: Portrait of A Serial Killer and The Vanishing
|
ScuroFantasma
10.26.16 | 4 is my fav |
Impervious
10.26.16 | I've always thought the Evil Dead movies as pretty overrated. I know it's how Sam Raimi got where he is and they've become cult films, but I don't entirely enjoy actually watching them.
List needs An American Werewolf In London. Otherwise it's a damn good list and props on throwing Slayer in there.
Also, a lot of people never remember that Alien is a true horror movie, just based in Sci-Fi so you get more props in addition to the props already given lol

theacademy
10.26.16 | wow came here to crack skulls (as usual) but actually I've seen a LOT worse
Alien as your #1 is respectable af (altho the correct choice is Halloween)
I feel like you're missing a lot of the best of the 80's and 90's tho...
Best ones you've neglected (off the top of my head):
Event Horizon
Halloween 4
Nightmare 3
Evil Dead Remake
Jaws
A handful of vincent price movies
Idle Hands
Host
Blade II
Scream
28 Days Later
|

10.26.16 | also i like army of darkness and the evil dead remake way more than drag me to hell fwiw |

wham49
10.26.16 | Halloween is 1 easily,
also f 13th 1+2 should be up there
what about prom night, my bloody valentine, town that dreaded sundown |
calmrose
10.26.16 | Let the Right One In is better than Let Me In, though Let Me In is still solid
"list needs REC" [2] |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | shit this list does not REC
Let the Right One In was great, but it wasn't really that much horror.
28 Days Later is awesome, but that also didn't scare me at all.
Henry rules, I like these more though.
Event Horizon should have been like 8000 times better.
Blade 2 is more action than horror.
Evil Dead Remake is awesome, but doesn't break my top 30.
Army of Darkness has like no horror in it lol |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | Jaws and Scream are great though, agreed |
elliootsmeuth
10.26.16 | I came here just to make sure at least one of the Evil Dead movies were here. |

10.26.16 | I cheated, both have number 2 spot |
Impervious
10.26.16 | I spent my time this month watching the entire series of:
Halloween
Friday The 13th
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
And all of them have one massive thing in common...the first 1-2 movies are good (classics) but everything that follows is mostly laughable or painful to watch. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.26.16 | suspiria rules |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | @Impervious - Lol, yup. Mostly just the first one.
@LordePots - Yeah man, but I'm real worried about that remake. |
theacademy
10.26.16 | Halloween 2 is a flaming piece of shit. It's almost as bad as 6 (curse), 3 (season), or 8 (resurrection). Zombie's Halloween 2 is also awful.
Same with every Texas chainsaw sequel, and every F13 after the second but up to the eleventh.

10.26.16 | Looking it up and I didn't even know what Suspiria was let alone there was a remake 0_o |

TheSpaceMan
10.26.16 | Alien and Silence of the Lambs are two of my favorite movies oat |
DungeonBoy
10.26.16 | Call me basic, but:
Alien, Evil Dead 2, The Shining, Re-Animator, The Thing, The Fly, are some of my favorite movies.
The atmosphere and build of House of the Devil was one of the best I've experienced in years. Rosemary's Baby, is a classic, love the atmosphere in that one too, but I think it has a lot to do with when it was made. Kinda like the Omen.. anyways, cool list dude. |
DungeonBoy
10.26.16 | Also, yeah, if you like these movies, definitely check out American Werewolf in London. It's fantastic. |
TheSpaceMan
10.26.16 | there's a reason some opinions are basic man, a good films a good film |
DanielNightLewis
10.26.16 | Mouth of Madness is the last good Carpenter movie.
Lots of the classics here, so the list is great but probably quite different to my 30 favourites if I made my own list. |
DungeonBoy
10.26.16 | Speaking of Carpenter movies, Prince of Darkness. Has anyone seen this one? One of my favorites, but rarely mentioned. Gonna go ahead and say it's probably his scariest movie. |
Egarran
10.26.16 | I liked Babadook. It does the horror aspects really well, but I understand if the super annoying kid turns people off.
The Conjuring and The Orphanage are very good too.
Prince of Darkness is great fun. That Alice Cooper cameo. |
TheSpaceMan
10.26.16 | alice cooper cameo? sounds promising |
Astral Abortis
10.26.16 | Good list overall, though I don't think Evil Dead 2 is even close to being on the same level as Evil Dead. It's basically just a short and crazy bridge between Evil Dead and Army of Darkness. On its own Evil Dead 2 is lacklustre, it may as well have been tacked on the front of Army of Darkness. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | @Egarran - It actually wasn't the kid who turned me off completely, it was the bullshit last 15ish minutes of that film. I am a fan of art films and all, but goddamn that was unsatisfying and awkward imo. I know a lot of people loved it, but I only really loved the first two acts.
@DungeonBoy - Prince of Darkness is pretty cool, but I don't think it's scarier than ITMOM, Halloween or The Thing. Still, good movie.
And I haven't seen American Werewolf since forever, downloading now!
The Conjuring was awesome, but I actually prefer the sequel. That was one of the best horror movies of this past year.
|
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | @OvDeath - Yeah, The Evil Dead is insane af. I think that the second one is equally creative, just in a very different way, but I totally understand why one would greatly prefer the first one to the second or vice versa. And I MUCH prefer the cross between insane horror and slapstick to the completely over the top Army of Darkness action comedy. Don't get me wrong, I love Army, but I think the first two are vastly superior. |
Egarran
10.26.16 | "The Conjuring was awesome, but I actually prefer the sequel. "
Wut, haven't heard this before. I thought it was supposed to be terrible. |
DominionMM1
10.26.16 | isn't 4 a simpsons halloween episode? |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | Nah, Conjuring 2 is awesome. It has one character decision towards the end of the film that makes absolutely zero sense, but other than that I like it more than the first one. |
Crymsonblaze
10.26.16 | Pretty solid list, although there are a few on here I still haven't seen. Glad to see In the Mouth of Madness is on here. That one never gets enough love.
How'd you feel about It Follows? It would definitely be somewhere in my top 10. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | @Dominion - I think it was |
Crymsonblaze
10.26.16 | Loved the first Conjuring, still need to get around to watching the second one. Loved the first Insidious a lot too. James Wan is pretty great |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | @Crymsonblaz - It Follows was fucking awesome, man, but I honestly find a hard time forgiving the ending. And the insanely inconsistent rules to that universe, to the point of there barely being rules.
But the score (which I have on vinyl now), cinematography, scare scenes, random time pieces, etc were all fantastic. I just wish the last 20 minutes were different. It's pretty similar to how I feel about the Babadook - whole movie ruled except for the third act. |
Crymsonblaze
10.26.16 | I can sort of agree with that (not the Babadook part - I think that climax is great) if you're talking about the pool scene. It's kind of weirdly set up and I'm not quite sure why they thought it would work, but whatever, I still enjoy it. As far as the actual ending in the sense of the last shot of the movie, I thought that was fantastic |

I'll try to find and watch the Conjuring and It Follows.
Thinking about modern horror movies has me thinking about Drag Me to Hell and Cabin in the Woods. Those movies were both great. |

10.26.16 | You need some Blood and Black Lace and you need it now.
Italian horror in general is the shit |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | @Crymsonblaze - yeah, the very last shot was awesome, I was mostly talking about the pool scene. And once again, I (and many others) are still wildly unclear to the rules of that universe. Still a solid 8/10 though, that movie is awesome and worth the blu-ray purchase.
Drag Me To Hell was originally my #30 until someone reminded me of House of the Devil and the Evil Dead remake. You're going to kill me, but I don't remember Cabin in the Woods. I watched it with my friends after eating a pot brownie that was too powerful and my recollection of that film is basically nothing. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | @Porcupinetheater - shit I haven't seen that! Woohoo, more Halloween movies |

10.26.16 | "I don't remember Cabin in the Woods"
"not the worst thing in the world really"
It's a pretty unique movie. I wouldn't say it's the greatest of all time but *SPOILER ALERT* the twist halfway through was not what I was expecting. If you knew about this movie going into it, it wouldn't be as cool, but my friends are good people who just said, check it out, and left it at that. |
DominionMM1
10.26.16 | I really knew nothing about it before watching it. I just didn't care for it in the least. |
Valkoor952
10.26.16 | Sinister was somewhat scary even though it was really stupid. |
mindleviticus
10.26.16 | The Blair Witch Project scared the shit out of me first time I saw it |
DanielNightLewis
10.26.16 | Cabin in the Woods is great fun. Drag Me To Hell was pretty terrible in my opinion. It felt like Raimi was living on the goodwill from Army of Darkness. |
JWT155
10.26.16 | Not necessarily scary as in gore and jumps, but Eyes Wide Shut and it's premise I find terrifying. Great suspense, and the theme of costumes and such goes with halloween. |
adr
10.26.16 | Night of the Living Dead > Dawn of the Dead by a lot
Also list is missing Eraserhead, Aliens, Possession, The Cremator, Videodrome, The Wicker Man and Jacob's Ladder hard
solid stuff overall tho |
DungeonBoy
10.26.16 | lol anyone who likes films should watch Eraserhead, it's truly unique. Aliens is more of an action movie, but definitely has some scares and awesome atmosphere. Not as terrifying as Alien IMO, but I actually prefer Aliens. |
Sinternet
10.26.16 | Oh good somebody said The Wicker Man which is GOAT |
Egarran
10.26.16 | It is indeed. Cage is magnificent! |
Crymsonblaze
10.26.16 | Not strictly horror, but what do people think about the movie Lo? I haven't seen it since it came out but I remember really loving it at the time. |
StrikeOfTheBeast
10.26.16 | Classic movies right here. Love 1 and 2 especially. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.26.16 | Oh, goddamnit. I'm watching It Follows again and I like this more than I remember. This might be in my top 30.
And I saw Cabin in the Woods again today, it was good but I didn't think it was amazing. Maybe it was too hyped for me.
Also, Eraserhead is creepy but I wouldn't call it horror.
Aliens is partially horror, but I just always pretty much considered it an action movie. If it is horror, it didn't scare me like the first one but it's still one of my favorite movies of all time.
As for "the dead" trilogy, I used to like Night more than Dawn, but time has changed that. Still relatively close, though. I watched Day again recently and it's not as good as I remember it being, but it's still not the worst movie ever.
Wicker Man is creepy, yeah. And Possession is also creepy, but neither would make it above any of these movies imo. Jacob's Ladder is closer. Videodrome is very interesting, but I guess I also never thought of that as a horror film either.
And I've never seen The Cremator, but I will check tonight probably. On a horror binge all week. |
Davil667
10.26.16 | Neat list man, 1, 2 (plus Army Of Darkness of course ) and 8 are true classics. It's so great to see The Fly on here as well, among my all time favs and underrated af. |
Impervious
10.28.16 | I'm glad someone agrees The Conjuring 2 is better than the first...which I also believed would be incredibly difficult to do.
I've loved all of the Insidious movies and if we're talking love for James Wan, you should also check out Lights Out that came out this year. He didn''t direct but he had involvement. That movie was sick.
Aliens I would definitely agree is more of an action movie.
Cabin In The Woods was brilliantly original and an ode to tons of horror movies.
It Follows is one of my favorite recent horrors next to pretty much everything James Wan has done.
Lastly, Drag Me To Hell was disgusting, scary and hilarious all at once. I don't care for Raimi's disgusting scenes like he does for The Evil Dead, but Drag Me To Hell was so good I didn't care. |
zakalwe
10.28.16 | Thrillers are scarier than horrors |
bentheREDfan
10.28.16 | Seen 1, 4, and 11. Really enjoyed them. Still haven't watched The Evil Dead. Love the Saw films but they may be more thriller than horror. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.28.16 | @benteheREDfan - Wait, you've only seen 1, 4 and 11? Dude, please check out more on this list. It's for your health. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.28.16 | @Impervious - I'll be sure to check it out. I just saw Ouiji prequel last night and it actually wasn't terrible. Not too many jump scares, ending was cool (thank God), and they didn't pan the screen to where you were supposed to look every time something scary happened. Wasn't the best movie ever, but wasn't the worst.
And fuck yeah for the Conjuring 2 and Drag Me To Hell love |
Egarran
10.29.16 | Oooo I'm retarded, I thought Conjuring 2 was Annabelle, but that is a spinoff prequel. Getting 2 immediately. |
Impervious
10.29.16 | Conjuring 2 was epic for sure. They're gonna make a spin off for The Nun too from it. Not sure how I feel about it. Annabelle could've been better but wasn't awful. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.30.16 | Ehhh...I have zero faith in spin offs. And I personally thought Annabelle was awful. |
Davil667
10.30.16 | Just watching Ash vs. Evil Dead. Never thought it possible but it's fun and entertaining af :] |

ChoccyPhilly
10.31.16 | At least Martyrs is here |
Evreaia
10.31.16 | Martyrs is great. So fucking sad it's getting fucked by an 'murican remake. [REC] told us American should never make remakes.
Also list needs [REC] and V/H/S |
Gyromania
10.31.16 | There are movies that portray the same nihilistic message as martyrs without the gratuitous violence tbh |
Impervious
10.31.16 | V/H/S was pretty dope. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.31.16 | The Martyrs remake is gonna be such a lolfest. I can't imagine who in the fuck thought that would ever be a good idea.
And yeah, REC and Session 9 both rule.
Ouiji isn't horrible but it's not amazing. I am kind of shocked that Chris Stuckmann gave it an A, this might be the first time I really disagree with him. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.31.16 | V/H/S had some fucking awesome segments, but also some incredibly lame ones. |
Impervious
10.31.16 | Rotten Tomatoes certified it Fresh too which is pretty uncommon for horrors. So for Stuckmann and RT to say it's good really gives me the itch that I just have to see it.
V/H/S had no theme really besides supernatural? They were all so random that it both felt cool that each had it's own segregated plot but at the same time not all the plots were strong. Had some good titties in it tho! lol |
Crymsonblaze
10.31.16 | The succubus one from the first V/H/S is pretty creepy. But the rest aren't very good. |
DarkSideOfLucca

StarsDie
11.02.16 | Nice list.
I'd add Saw, Cube, Bug, Cabin in the Woods, Event Horizon, Cape Fear (both), Seven... And I can't recommend these two enough: Angel Heart (1987) and Dead Alive (1992). Angel Heart has a twist that you can probably see from a mile away, but the atmosphere, acting and cinematography is on-point. Dead Alive is probably the goriest hollywood movie in existence hands down. I'm unaware of anything crazier than that one. But it's definitely comedic and campy which dampens the "horror" aspect a bit. Still brilliant watching such extreme levels of depravity. |
wham49
11.02.16 | Lucca, get into the 70's slashers man, Town that Dreaded sundown is a good start, hit the original prom nght, terror train, my bloody valentine, the prowler |
Egarran
11.02.16 | How is Dead Alive a Hollywood movie?
But it's pretty awesome that the director went on to make LoTR. |
Iamthe Nightstars
11.05.16 | I finally saw It Follows the other night and it was pretty weak for all the hype I've been seeing for it. The acting was average at best and the fact that there was no music or voice overs made it seem kind of plain. I laughed at the part when the old lady was walking down the hall. It's like, am I supposed to be afraid of someone's grandma? |
DarkSideOfLucca
11.05.16 | Dead Alive is fucking amazing, can't believe I didn't include that. And will do, wham.
@Iamthe Nighstars- The Witch is better, agreed |

DarkSideOfLucca
09.29.17 | Martyrs and Eyes Without a Face is two, but fuck I forgot to include Inside |

09.29.17 | I haven't seen that one, is it good? Really like Frontiers and Livid more than Inside tbh. Even High Tension despite the plagiarism and unintentional campiness.
If you're interested in Australian and Spanish horror check out The Loved Ones and Sleep Tight. 2 Of my all time faves.
List is also severely lacking in Lucky Mckee. |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.29.17 | They're both great - EWaF is more old school, a tad artsier. Martyrs is incredibly brutal and uncomfortable, would not recommend putting that on at a party.
Frontiers was a great time but I actually haven't seen Livid so I guess I'll have to check that out next.
Yeah, High Tension is good, but I am not as obsessed as some other people are.
LOVED ONES RULES HOLY SHIT that definitely deserves to be here. Have not seen Sleep Tight, aha another one I'll have to check.
Thanks for the recs, man. Just in time for Halloween season. |

09.29.17 | Martyrs is like my fav horror film ever so you're preaching to the choir. I avoided Frontiers for the longest time because nazis and torture films are a bit whatever to me but it was actually a really gripping one with some really intense scenes. The Loved Ones is one of my all time sleeper hits, it's so fucking good, I watch it every Halloween. Sleep Tight is genius but really disturbing so get ready. High Tension is overrated but I still think it's really cool. Some of my fav kills in that one, so damn vicious. Cheers dude |

09.29.17 | oh yeah and Livid is very different than most French horror films. It's more comparable to Tale Of Two Sisters which I see you have on the list. It's more of an art-house film, it's really good. |
