DarkSideOfLucca: Meshuggah Ranked

DarkSideOfLucca 10.06.16	I basically am violently obsessed with all of this except for 10 (which is still awesome on it's own), so this was an incredibly hard list to rank. Most of these are in the 9/10 or 10/10 for me.

sumyunguy 10.06.16	Completely agree with you on 1 and 2. Those are easily their best. Also agree that DEI is overrated. It's amazing, but it pales in comparison to what came later. I would definitely have Nothing higher than Koloss though. I just can't get over the production job on Koloss. It has to be their worst sounding album. Organic just doesn't suit these guys. The drums sound hollow and are way too high in the mix. Props though. Legendary band.

DarkSideOfLucca 10.06.16	@sumyumguy - Hell yeah dude, and that's refreshing to hear! I love DEI, but I never understood how people could love that over their more recent, more unique work. I may have underrated Nothing on this list now that I'm looking at it, probably would rate it above Chaosphere. And yeah, that was my only real complaint about Koloss - it sounds a bit too clean for them. @Sinternet - Nah.

DarkSideOfLucca 10.06.16	Aha, yeah like I said before : they're my favorite band, so everything that isn't Contradictions Collapse is either a 9/10 or a 10/10 so I still love DEI. The technical thrash sound is awesome, but lyrically it's inferior and in terms of them inventing their own Meshuggah sound it's pretty immature imo. They didn't become the unique mammoth that they are until a bit later, as awesome as that album is.

DEI destroyed Fear Factory at the time and pushed sonically where a thrash style can be. DEI isn't just "essentially" technical thrash metal. there's more going on than what they're playing. and if you actually put up their lyrics against the other albums, then C33 isn't all that special comparatively. I'd say obZen is on par to DEI but DEI had more going on. those gang vox added a bit of badass that's been missing too. Textures copied DEI, and Sikth took some 'shuggah to their sound. djent's been pulsating before Periphery, and speaking of them their s/t has been out for more than 6 years which is more than "a few". thanks to the internet it seems shorter than it seems but we've lived through it and caught up to a genre that hadn't matched up to OBZEN.

DarkSideOfLucca 10.06.16	Agree to disagree about Catch 33, those lyrics and the lyrics on ObZen are some of my favorite ever. And DEI IS essentially just technical thrash, what else is in there? I guess there's some jazz thrown in on the solos but to me it's not as interesting as them literally creating their own genre of music. Also, the copycat bands are missing what makes Meshuggah Meshuggah.
