Snide
09.06.16 | Prankster Thundy was actually the reason it was banned for a while; although whenever I run into a Thundy I usually just switch to Jolteon and HP Ice (or something else if I predict a switch) the shit out of it. Ironically Jolteon is my answer for Thundy. |

SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | Yea I meant competitively haha, I've played the in-game since gen 1 as well. Gen 5 was easily my favorite, the weather wars were the best |
AdoreSwancore
09.06.16 | @SteakByrnes true but I was only giving reasoning behind not making that one change, like personally I think this team needs more walls if anything |

09.06.16 | My answer for Mega Zard is usually to predict a switch with Breloom and Rock Tomb it (boosted by Technician + an assured Speed drop) |
Snide
09.06.16 | Dude I miss the weather wars so much, it sucks that Gen 6 removed the infinite turn setting for ability set weather. |
AdoreSwancore
09.06.16 | @BlackMalachite still there is a middle ground between all out attack and a stall team, I'm guess I'm just being a little biased as I always start my team building by having at least a defensive and special defensive core |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | That's not a very good answer for Mega Zard X. Diancie is your only real answer, I think Heatran would work well on the team if you replaced Sableye with it |
AdoreSwancore
09.06.16 | Nah infinite weather was annoying gen 5 was pretty much all weather teams |
Ebola
09.06.16 | I hated the weather spam so much tbh |

SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | But yea fuck the weather nerf, it killed so many Pokemon |
BallsDeep
09.06.16 | oh I also managed to get to 2nd in the world ranking on pokemon crater in 07 (on a joint account with 2 friends) until we got hacked and lost everything and hated my life for about a week
@Demigod Nah I cant remember it for certain but If I had to take a guess it was Tyrannitar, Kingdra and Alakazam (we were only allowed 3 pokemon team to keep the games moving quickly guess) |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Steak: Sableye I rely on for too many threats to remove him for Heatran. Besides, usually I'm also able to predict and Magic Bounce a Stealth Rock back onto my opponent's team using Mega Diance, or just take care of it with Breloom. I've never really had too many issues with Zard X, or Zard Y.
@Ebola: why'd you hate weather spam? |
BallsDeep
09.06.16 | nice to see 2 on the list as well |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | Well if you don't face any Zard problems then I guess you're fine. Also I just noticed that if you took Sableye off then you got bodied by Sand Rush Excadrill, so better to keep it haha |
AdoreSwancore
09.06.16 | @SteakBrynes heatran would also make his team kind of ground weak |
AdoreSwancore
09.06.16 | Damn it as soon as I finish typing you realised anyway |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | @AdoreSwancore Very true, only Ground answer would be Talonflame, which isn't the best answer considering a lot of Pokemon that carry Earthquake also carry Stone Edge/Rock Slide |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | Haha yea I realized |
Snide
09.06.16 | Excadrill isn't too much of a problem thanks to Mach Punch because most modern players don't think "oh, Excadrill's defenses are shit" and basically put no EV investment into HP. |
AlexKzillion
09.06.16 | I'm still very new to this. All I know is that a cursed up Umbreon is fucking unstoppable. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | Yea Breloom is a good panic button for Excadrill, just make sure it doesn't get knocked out before Excadrill decides to sweep haha |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Alex: Not really, Will-O-Wisp nullifies the boosted attack (although Synchronize ability is a bitch to anything that isn't a fire type), also Calm Mind +1 Mega Diancie Moonblast OHKOs it while Umbreon can't do much back even at +2 Curse. Too many faeries in OU for Umbreon to make much of a mark bar being a decent cleric.
@Steak: Usually I don't bring my Breloom out until later in the match anyways so I'm good on that lol. |
Snide
09.06.16 | Also, does anyone in here still run Rain teams?
I occasionally run Specs Politoed on one of my other teams with some relatively successful results. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | Umbreon with attacking moves is very bad actually, and attempting to set up with it would be a nightmare. If you want an unstoppable tank than just go with Rest Talk Calm Mind Suicune, the once best Pokemon in all of standard play |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Steak: I actually still run CroCune Suicune on a few of my teams. It still destroys, especially with Scald. |
PistolPete
09.06.16 | I have a Blaziken that wrecks kids.
Pokemon #: Blaziken (either with Blazikenite or Life Orb)
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 252 HP, 252 Atk, 4 Speed
Nature: Adamant
Moves:
Flare Blitz
Hi-Jump Kick
Hone Claws
Protect
He sucks against a few select guys tho: Starmie, Tentacruel particularly |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | I rarely run rain teams anymore, they just don't pack the same punch as they used to. At least you can run Drizzle + Swift Swim now |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Pistol: Blaziken is banned in OU, so honestly those HP EVs aren't necessary. The high stats in Ubers basically mean Blaziken is gonna get OHKOd anyways. I'd recommend just upping the speed EVs to 252 and running an additional coverage move instead of protect, but that's just me. |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Steak: Wait Swift Swim + Drizzle was unbanned what? Does that mean I can bring out my baby Kingdra once again? |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | I never run Mega Blaziken, regular Blaziken with a Life Orb hits harder anyway. Plus why run Mega Blaziken when there is Mega Salamence, the next most broken thing to Mega Rayquaza |
AlexKzillion
09.06.16 | The only problems I've had with Umbreon have been Toxics/Will O Wisps cause I don't pack heal bell a lot of the time. Also this may sound completely retarded right here but I don't think I've ever seen a Diancie. I've sweeped teams with cursed up Umbreon in OU and seems to be the only pokemon I 100% know what I'm doing with so I have one on almost all my teams.
And since I use Curse I always run Payback. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | @BlackMalachite Yea they lifted the ban at the beginning of gen 6 because of the weather nerf |
PistolPete
09.06.16 | Yeah I still want mine useable for main game but I know. Protect is so he gets at least one speed boost in. Good advice though! |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Pistol: Yeah, I know people usually use that for the Speed Boost but I'd rather just attack on the first step, take chances and have an additional coverage move for usual checks that people will bring out for various Speed Boost users (Sharpedo has such a nice ass movepool for example)
@Alex: The problem is that Umbreon's base attack is 65 which is absolutely pitiful. Without 3-4 Curse boosts, it basically can't do anything. Relying on that many boosts to make a Pokemon offensively viable is just that, unviable.
@Steak: Fuck, I'm gonna go build a new rain team just because of Kingdra. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | @BlackMalachite I find that specs Kingdra performs the best in rain this gen, at least from what I've experienced. Mixed with an Orb also puts in a lot of work |
AlexKzillion
09.06.16 | I've maxed my attack/defense plenty of times with curse actually. The faster you get the first couple ones in the easier it is to keep stacking them. |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Alex: What set do you run specifically with Umbreon, I want to run some damage calcs for you?
@Steak: I'm gonna try that, Specs Kingdra seems great. What about Band Kingdra |
Ebola
09.06.16 | Drizzle + Vaporeon w/ Hydration is godly |
AdoreSwancore
09.06.16 | Yeah the only really viable offensive move on umbreon is foul play just because it doesn't use it's atrocious attack stat |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Ebola: Speaking of Water types, I'm super happy that Manaphy was unbanned in OU in Gen 6. Tail Glow is absolutely monstrous. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | @BlackMalachite I don't really think Kingdra has the coverage needed for a Banded set. However if you do want a fully physical Kingdra you could run Dragon Dance, Waterfall, Outrage, and Iron Head with a Life Orb. If you do want Banded tho, run those three attacks with Ice Beam and a Naive nature |
AlexKzillion
09.06.16 | Umbreon @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Protect
- Payback
- Curse
- Wish |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Steak: Only reason I say banded is because Iron Head can be a nasty surprise for dem Faeries. I'm a little disappointed that Kingdra doesn't have access to a physical ice move.
@Alex: Why Protect and not Heal Bell? Scouting on Umbreon is fairly useless due to pretty much assured switch ins. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | @Alex Why do you have Max Defense EVs on a Curse mon? You're better off putting that 252 into HP, and 4 into either Defense or Attack if you're running this set |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | @BlackMalachite The Pokemon that truly deserves a good physical Ice type move is Kyurem-B, even Ice Punch would be good to have |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Steak: Yeah, but then again I'm a little bit thankful that Kyurem-B doesn't have a Physical ice type move because that's one of the reasons it moved down into OU in the first place. Although with how the metagame is now, I doubt it would be banned from OU if they gave it a Physical Ice move. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | Yea, it's Speed leaves a little to be desired, and that's truly what is holding Kyurem-B back from demolishing everything in OU. It has solid bulk, a huge Attack stat and a respectable Special Attack stat, but that Speed just isn't fast anymore and hasn't been since gen 2. Base 110 is the benchmark nowadays |
AlexKzillion
09.06.16 | I use Protect for stalling as well as wish + leftover replenishing. Normally when I'm in a bad position I throw a toxic and then switch to Umbreon and stall it out. I've tried switcing Protect with other moves like Toxic and Heal Bell but it just doesn't work for me/I'm still too amuetuer to use it correctly.

09.06.16 | The same reason why there was a pile of sludge, six eggs that evolve into a tree with eggs on it, and magnets. There are great designs and bad designs in every gen |
BallsDeep
09.06.16 | come to think of it Gen 1 was pretty poor too - a pokeball with eyes, a literal turd with eyes, 3 turds with eyes, a purple jelly , a pink jelly , a rat, a bigger rat, a rock with arms, a slightly bigger rock with arms and legs, a magnet, several magnets stuck together, a series of cracked eggs with eyes. They were always scraping the bottom of the barrel with their designs weren't they |

09.06.16 | Gen 6 (X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire) had some bomb ass designs. Avalugg, a literally walking glacier, and Trevenant, a hollowed out reaper tree, not to mention a bunch of the other cool designs. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | Haha yea, every gen has its ups and downs for Pokemon designs |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | Plus one of the best designed Pokemon (in my opinion at least) came from gen 5, that being Haxorus |
Snide
09.06.16 | Gen 1's still the worst Gen for me honestly. Fire Red and Leaf Green are the only renditions worth a damn. At least Gen 2 is fun to go back and play without its flaws being glaringly obvious. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | @BlackMalachite I share the same opinion, Gen 1's mechanics are so bad |
BallsDeep
09.06.16 | I think they really shit the bed with the legendaries in gen 5 and 6 they look more like digimon then pokemon |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Steak: Gen 5 was the second worst for me; bar some cool designs, and the surprisingly competent narrative (N is bar far one of the best written characters in the entire series, both game, and show), it made some really frustrating design choices.
Gen 6 got me reinvigorated with Wonder Trade and the GTS system, which actually made completing the Pokedex possible (which I recently completed the Global Dex on Alpha Sapphire for the fourth time) |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Balls: What? Gen 6's legendaries were all lit, and Kyurem from Gen 5 was fantastic. |
CaimanJesus
09.06.16 | I've never played past gen 2, but I can't go back and play gen 1 anymore. Last time I tried I stopped when I saw gust was classified as a normal move |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | Gen 5 is easily my favorite overall. I love the designs of the Pokemon, I love the Pokemon themselves, the story is actually good, the visuals are fantastic and look the best (much better than the 3D models imo), plus the competitive is my favorite. Gen 3 is my second favorite for various reasons, biggest one being that my favorite Pokemon Salamence comes from gen 3 |
Snide
09.06.16 | Caiman, just get a 3DS and wait for Sun and Moon dude. The modern generation of Pokemon is fucking fantastic. |
BallsDeep
09.06.16 | Gen 1 had some boss designs tho like Gyarados, Arcanaine, scyther and Mewtwo but yeah they were pretty dodgy, just wtf is Jynx supposed to be anyway? Looks like a crossdressing hooker with blackface |
Snide
09.06.16 | Steak, I will agree that Gen 5 competitive was the most fun, and the visuals were the best for the sprited games, but I love the 3D look way more. Reminds me of XD Gale of Darkness which is one of my favorite Gamecube games of all time. |

Keyblade
09.06.16 | man I didn't know ppl were this into pokemon competitively |
Snide
09.06.16 | @Keyblade: Pokemon competitively isn't at the levels of something like League of Legends, but it's still one of the biggest active competitive communities in gaming.
@Steak: I love the new look of Sun and Moon, and the Alola forms have me hyped to no end. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | Sun and Moon look like they're shaping up to be the best games in the series easily. I just wish they'd reveal more than only gen 1 Pokemon for the Alolan forms, because I'd love to see more Pokemon from other gens getting this treatment |
Snide
09.06.16 | What I'm surprised about is that apparently according to a leak (which has so far proven to be true) there's no new mega evolutions, yet you can find all the mega stones all over Alola. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.16 | I've been hoping that megas are gone in gen 7, they made the power creep way too high in gen 6. Yea I like megas, but they are way too strong |
Snide
09.06.16 | They actually just posted a new trailer, apparently there's a new Pokemon thing called "Ultra Beasts" in Sun and Moon. Holy shit watch this, weird ass new information but it's cool - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFbMGKvN6ts |
AlexKzillion

09.08.16 | I've been using pokemon showdown a lot. I mostly play a lot of UU tier and have a pretty sick self made team with an unbeatable special wall in Regice who is super underrated in my opinion. I can't help a lot with your talonflame/jolteon combo considering I simply don't zone in on sweepers too hard. I would recommend maybe having Forretress as a good rapid spinner because it sounds like your talonflame would get destroyed by stealth rock
