the 2000's, come on guys, live a little
90's were very diverse as well, 60's and 80's dominated too much by one genre
maybe it depends on the genre
60's pop and psych and folk of course
70's prog and metal(doom)
80's metal (not Hair), stadium rock
90's hard rock includes everything
2000's no idea, prog metal maybe

07.09.16 | balls, what are you refering to, the 2000's thing
by far the worst decade of music, music was over by the late 90's. Sorry but everything was done before that, most things were retreads of thing done before, that and way too much playing to a specific sub genre, that is boring, bands were like( we are a ___________ band, we only write music for that) nobody was taking chances. this is ofcourse MO, anybody agree |
Rik VII
07.09.16 | "music was over by the late 90's."
what |
wham49
07.09.16 | Rik, I guess there was no more mystery, you knew exactly what you were getting, and like I said most things were played out by then, everything was pinned down, everybody was looking for shock value, or the opposite way indie music went which wasn't good either, very bland |

07.09.16 | Dude, I don't even listen to that much of modern music and I can think of many great modern, original albums that rule hard |
BallsDeep
07.09.16 | @wham49 nah that's the stupidest thing I've ever read man
One could argue that music had been stagnating this decade but definitely not the 2000's - a lot of sub genres particularly of metal weren't fully refined until the 2000's. Obviously me choosing this time period this reflects my preference for metal but saying that music was over by the late 90's is a ridiculous statement. |
Pon

plus you guys blast me but cant give me any recs from the decade you are so passionate about, give me some killer recs and, maybe you guys should do the same and go back, there was a whole world before nirvana guys they were not the creators |
wham49
07.09.16 | balls, maybe that is why I havent gotten into newer music, refined subgenres are not my thing, I like the term "music" not a five word description of a subgenre within a subgenre, hang up for me, bands box themselves in too much |
Pon
07.09.16 | The problem is you're so obviously closed minded that giving you any recs that can "hang with the big boys of the 70's" (lol) would be a waste of time. |

Radiohead - In Rainbows

Tame Impala - Currents
Todd Terje - It's Album Time

BallsDeep
07.09.16 | Opposeite to boxing themselves in man you have bands like Opeth, Ulver, Isis, Agalloch, Neurosis, Deftones, Blut Aus Nord etc deviating from their 90's sound and experimenting with other subgenres and soundscapes. And they're just a few examples in the metal real off the top of the dome but eitherway the 2000's were an intersting time in music.
And fuck i'm just answering your initial question (which should include 2000s as an option). |
Artuma
07.09.16 | "you guys blast me but cant give me any recs from the decade you are so passionate about"

07.09.16 | radiohead, porcupine tree, Bowie, are great agreed, lost me with the Gorillas, not really even a band, always a whole different group,

and Jac maybe my rating show some pattern of classic rock tendencies, but that is only due to raring laziness like I said, not sure if the Zappa, Genesis, Yes, Larry Coryell, Roky Erickson, or any of that JAzz stuff I rated you would know enough of to know it is not dad rock, which is a term I hate, because it is basically the indie music of now with good production |
MrSirLordGentleman
07.09.16 | "just not at the grand scale as the other four decades"
I can agree with you in that, partially. But I think the main reason is that today's mainstream music sucks while it didn't back then but mainstream music being bad doesn't mean there are less good bands, just that they aren't a comercial success |
adr
07.09.16 | not sure if the Zappa, Genesis, Yes, Larry Coryell, Roky Erickson, or any of that JAzz stuff I rated you would know enough |
wham49
07.10.16 | fair enough Sir, problem is how do you know until you know, people always bring up Opeth, which I cant stand, and the indie shit many of my students bring up, I am bored by them, probably me but, I think"would these guys be relevant in earlier decades", and the answer is usually no, they would have been lost in the hundreds of other bands |
ZippaThaRippa
07.10.16 | My favorite decade is this one because it's the one that I'm currently alive in and I like a lot of things about being alive |
BallsDeep
07.10.16 | well you asked which decade was our favorite not which one spawned the most genres and we gave you our answers. Also Opeth wouldn't have been around in the earlier decades because the style of music they play wasn't realized until the 90's but if they were then I'm sure they would be deemed as visionary and revolutionary in not just metal but music in general |

wham49
07.10.16 | balls, If you mean death metal than ya for sure not till the 90's but most people think they are so much more than that, could not get through the 2 albums I have tried to hear, I cant stand death metal, I also asked for some reasoning behind the decade not the usual anything before 2002 is dad rock or anything after 89 blows, whatever, was surprised by the outcome, more 90's than I thought, but I guess it is the users, I was of age to make 90's my fave but think it is weaker than the 70's but better than the 80's in some respects, like I said earlier depends on what your into, early doom, or metal or jazz rock or prog or hybrid psych rock, whicjh is what I get into, ill take the 70's |

07.10.16 | read some of the comments and wow

07.11.16 | p4p, what do you mean, first of all I may be an idiot but I am not stupid, and I know first hand how bad the 80's unfortunately got The good music was really really good, but the bad, IE hair metal, late 80's pop got really really bad. The 80's was really inventive in spots, but commercialism and money made everybody veer toward the middle eventually. I love the 80's thrash, early 80's pop, new wave, the new direction punk went were all great, bad keyboards and power ballads made it bad.
not sure how that opinion makes me an idiot, but I have to remember that most of you were born after I graduated college, so I guess I get what I ask for being on this site |
