80s U2 Songs You Should Prob Jam

U2 is one of the most hit or miss bands there are for me. While the hits outweigh the miss enough for me to consider myself a fan of the group, there's a lot of music that damages their reputation a little bit. But here are ten, fantastic songs from the group that are worth your time, if you casually like the band and haven't heard them yet. I'm trying to avoid obvious choices (the list has two songs that were singles, but neither got that much traction, unfortunately). This is just their 80s work there will be another one Achung-present
10U2
The Unforgettable Fire

Promenade
Right off the bat letting you know that The Unforgettable Fire occupies almost half of this list. This song, although only about two minutes in length, is one of the most atmospheric sounding songs U2 has ever produced. Bono's vocals are the definite highlight on this track (as the rest of the band isn't nearly as prominent on it), but the instrumentation's subtlety is a big reason why this track works so much. The Unforgettable Fire is definitely the band's most atmospheric record, and the Edge, Larry Mullen Jr., and especially Adam Clayton do a great job on this track softly and ambiently backing one of Bono's most emotive vocal performances

Boy

An Cat Dubh
One of the darkest sounding U2 songs in mood, An Cat Dubh begins with a very haunting riff from the group. The pounding drums and thick bassline than come in and it kicks off. Bono's voice on this song isn't particularly outstanding, but nor is it on most of their early releases. The whisper right before the riff re-enters at the end of each chorus make the song feel even darker. As the track ends, the riff builds up on top of itself, transitioning into the next track. Perhaps if the track that followed was better (Into the Heart is a weaker song on the album), it might be even higher.
8U2
The Joshua Tree

Bullet the Blue Sky
Probably the Edge's best track on all of the Joshua Tree. Mullen's groove that opens up the track is fantastic, and right over that we hear feedback from the Edge that works absolutely amazing along with Clayton's bassline, painting a fantastic image of a war ridden world in the listener's mind. Bono's spoken vocals during the last half of the track fully solidify this image in the listener's head as well, and the Edge's slide guitar work on the song that resembles the sound of fighter planes is just incredible to say the least.
7U2
The Unforgettable Fire

Wire
The track contains one of the best riffs the Edge has ever crafted. It's major chorus, minor verse structure makes it a more different sounding track from the group, and the energy kept by the band is incredible in the track. A lot of what I like about the Unforgettable Fire is the atmosphere the tracks provide, and this is a big example. Not in a soundscapey type of way, but the general vibe from the song is just fantastic. It also contains one of the most raw sounding vocal performances we ever hear from Bono (not that it's particularly raw, but it's Bono. What's impressive for him isn't impressive for the standards of other, less soft sounding vocalists)
6U2
War

Red Light
My god the trumpet is a fantastic touch. Similarly to Wire, Bono's voice is more raw on this track, and he absolutely freakin blows his lungs out on this song. One of the highlights off the back half of War, this song contains an absolutely fantastic trumpet solo at the end of the song.
5U2
The Joshua Tree

One Tree Hill. It's a shame that out of all the Joshua Tree's singles, this one got the least traction. The overall mood this song conveys is the best on the entire album. Bono's vocals after the last chorus are the highlight of the album, the volume swells in the middle section are fantastic, and it might be one of the band's best songs lyrically. The added vocals at the very end of the track are incredible as well. It would be the band's most underrated single, if not for number 4 on this list.
4U2
The Unforgettable Fire

The Unforgettable Fire
If not for one other, this would be my favorite from my favorite record from the band. The Edge's guitar work blends perfectly with the haunting strings. The rhythm section does a great job here too and Bono is ridiculously powerful on this song. The strings especially help the haunting, bleak atmosphere. This is one of the best songs they've ever made by far.
3U2
War

Drowning Man
I freakin love this song. From the volume swells at the beginning, to the lyrics, to how the atmosphere perfectly suits the song, to Bono's incredible vocals, to the violin at the end, I can't do this song justice. If you don't know it, spin it now.
2U2
Boy

The Electric Co.
Right from the frantic guitars at the beginning, you know you're in for one of the most energetic songs from the group. The Edge is the highlight of this track, switching from riff to riff,
1U2
The Unforgettable Fire

A Sort of Homecoming
Where to start with this one? Unforgettable Fire was my first U2 album (I span because I thought Pride was a cool tune), and I just repeated this song over and over again. It remains my favorite track from the band, and contains everything I love about the group. Bono's vocals on this track absolutely shine, as he delivers his best performance. Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen work together to create the song's foundation where the Edge's atmospheric guitar tones perfectly fill the background of the track. If you like U2, even a little, and you haven't heard this song, go listen to it right now.
