CalculatingInfinity
06.02.16 | Super detailed boxsets for limited editions are the best :3
I really care about package and appreciate artists that put effort into them, my fav out of the 5 listed are Digipacks. |
Brabiz
06.02.16 | Wow really? Haha for me they're like vinyl but less interesting and the corners no matter how hard i avoid it end up scuffed up |
NLD
06.02.16 | only physical music i own is cassettes and cds. always been a big fan of cassettes |
CalculatingInfinity
06.02.16 | I never fuck up the corners oddly, plus I know Vinyl is gorgeous but I rarely buy Vinyls enough to appreciate them. Seriously limited editions of stuff are the best packaging and I can't get enough. |
owen
06.02.16 | digipacks > jewel case |
SCREAM!
06.02.16 | I've had really shit luck with jewel cases. Seems like half the ones I order online or buy at shows end up being broken (chipped corner, broken hinge, cd holder missing "teeth", etc) |
CalculatingInfinity
06.02.16 | Digipacks>Jewel Case [2] for the reason Scream said. |
Sinternet
06.02.16 | oh god missing teeth are fucking annoying |
Sinternet
06.02.16 | love digipacks and any kind of cardboard case really, gives the aesthetic of vinyl but smaller |
NLD
06.02.16 | digipaks > jewel case |
Parallels
06.02.16 | Digipacks>Jewel Case [4] |
heck
06.02.16 | what kind of digipaks are we talking though? like the kind with the plastic tray is rad, but fuck the ones that are just like cardboard sleeves that the disc slides into and gets scratched to hell every time you take it out |
Parallels
06.02.16 | You're thinking of a Digisleeve |
heck
06.02.16 | I've seen the terms used interchangeably but yeah, fuck those |
zakalwe
06.02.16 | digital age brats admiring casettes.
lol |
Sinternet
06.02.16 | next they'll be clamouring for vhs right? |
NLD
06.02.16 | cassettes are the best because i can get hard to find music on cassette from yard sales and thrift shops for like a quarter. cds are normally just a waste when you can buy the same music digitally anyway |
Brabiz
06.02.16 | Right, because i didn't grow up with analogue or anything.
With digipaks I hate the way they look and how flimsy they feel. Then the digisleeves are the worst things on the planet. |
zakalwe
06.02.16 | I don't mind digipaks. What's a digisleeve? |
NLD
06.02.16 | essentially just a cardboard sleeve for an album. like a square piece of cardboard with a slit on the side |
NLD
06.02.16 | or plastic i guess. probably aren't all cardboard, don't really own any myself |
heck
06.02.16 | a digisleeve is one of these monstrosities http://www.balticdisc.ee/uploads/pictures/large/b342e229cb2f41089fbeb2ab1724b7eb.JPG
they look cool but they're woefully impractical |
zakalwe
06.02.16 | Oh yeah. Them things. They're a bit shit. |
Sinternet
06.02.16 | i love digisleeves, they look way better than jewelcases, take up less space and i've never had problems with discs scratching |
CalculatingInfinity
06.02.16 | I love Digisleeves [2] |
heck
06.02.16 | I stay stocked up on slim jewel cases that I can just put the disc in whenever I get an album that comes in a digisleeve |
iloveyouall
06.02.16 | digisleeves are pretty wank. |
zakalwe
06.02.16 | The booklet is essential. I need the full album experience. |
Sinternet
06.02.16 | but why jewel cases just look horrible and plasticky, it's like looking at a machine rather than something tangible |
NLD
06.02.16 | what |
heck
06.02.16 | because function over fashion
|
CalculatingInfinity
06.02.16 | I think Digipacks/sleeves looks so much nicer and fit the theme of the band in general much more than a Jewel Case, what I buy Physical Copies for. |
heck
06.02.16 | sure, I get that, but I also like not scratching up my CDs and rendering them unplayable after a certain amount of time |
heck
06.02.16 | it's not like I'm outright discarding the digisleeves or even taking the booklets out of them, I just put the discs in separate slim cases next to them on the shelf.
best of both worlds, now I have the nice package to look at and the disc is nice and secure |
CalculatingInfinity
06.02.16 | I never have any problems scratching my CD's with them so idk, I have far more of an issue cracking jewel cases. |
Supercoolguy64
06.02.16 | jewel cases are so satisfying man |
onionbubs
06.02.16 | digipak>jewel case>digisleeve |
heck
06.02.16 | pretty much every digisleeve CD I've had has gotten small surface scratches the very first time I remove the disc from the sleeve, no matter how gentle I am. it usually doesn't affect playback but it still bugs the hell out of me, plus I'd just rather not risk doing additional/worse damage in the future |
heck
06.02.16 | digipak>jewel case>digisleeve [2] |
CalculatingInfinity
06.02.16 | A good question: Fav packaging you've ever seen for an album or personally brought? |
Sinternet
06.02.16 | never had a digisleeve cd scratch, had plenty of jewel cases break though |
Sinternet
06.02.16 | favourite packaging and one i wish i had is ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space pharmacs packaging

06.02.16 | Jewel cases are so fucking fragile |
CalculatingInfinity
06.02.16 | Hahah wow that's cool af Sin |
onionbubs
06.02.16 | oh wait
the jewel cases where that side thingy is clear and you can see like the album cover through that too is cool. but when that side thingy is just a solid color like black, white or brown (which is the WORST) on like older cds, that kinda sucks |
heck
06.02.16 | I've never really had much of a problem with jewel cases tbh. most of the ones I've ever had that have broken have been due entirely to my own stupidity and clumsiness.
anybody ever get any jewel cases from Japan? I've gotten some that are so thick and sturdy I don't think you could break them if you tried |
CalculatingInfinity
06.02.16 | I have Hellscythe and yeah some are like that. |
Sinternet
06.02.16 | oh yeah really sturdy and strong ones where they feel nice and weighted are cool but the average one cracks are loses teeth from anything |
zakalwe
06.02.16 | That's the one I had sin. I've mentioned in my sound off that Ladies and Gents was like a work of art when it was released. It was totally fucking mind blowing. |

06.02.16 | just to update the rating really quickly
super jewel box>everything else. but the rating for everything else is the same as i listed before
its a shame my only super jewel box is for a paul mccartney album i dont care about that much (i love his work and respect the hell outta him but post wings he's...okay. though his newest was pretty sweet. its not that album though.) |
ScuroFantasma
06.02.16 | I like digisleeves. As someone who doesn't buy vinyl, they kinds give off a mini-vinyl vibe which is cool. Plus I've never scratched a cd on them.
Jewel cases are cool unless you're shipping them, then there's like a 20% chance they'll be damaged (teeth damage really sucks), depends on how much care is put into the package when it's sent.
Digipaks I'm not a big fan on, I've had some just sitting on shelves and get damaged on the edges. I'm worried about how they'll hold up but they sure do look nice.
Best packaging I've seen is the packaging for the new Hexvessel. It's like some super sturdy digipak. I'm not sure what to call it but that and those 'media book' releases (Eluveitie - Origins and Equilibrium - Erdentempel deluxe editions had them if you need a reference) are the best imo. |
