Money Songs

Money songs, like money beets, are the songs that make you pay more attention to the overall product. When listening to an album for the first time, if no songs jump out at me I may never give the album another listen. An album with a 'money song' however will keep me coming back and often the repeated exposure will allow me to appreciate the whole album. These are some of the songs and their stories.
1Kvelertak
Kvelertak

Fossegrim. This song has such a powerful beat it was impossible to ignore.
2Ben Folds
Rockin' The Suburbs

Title track. Kind of a cheesy song but it is a fun listen and over time I came to appreciate the rest of the album and its more serious/heartbreaking tone.
3Built to Spill
Perfect from Now On

I would hurt a Fly. BTS wasn't one of my favorite bands right off the bat. It wasn't until I heard the first few measures of this song that I was hooked on the band.
4Cat Power
You Are Free

Fool. An emotionally thick album took me a while to enjoy but luckily Fool was catchy enough earn this more spins.
5Damien Jurado
Caught In the Trees

Sheets. It is hard for a mostly solo acoustic artist to get me to notice them these days but this song and eventually whole album I consider a folk masterpiece.
6The Dismemberment Plan
Emergency & I

What do you want me to say? I look back now and love the entire album but without this one song it would have been yet another record gathering dust.
7Faith No More
Angel Dust

Midlife Crisis. I was never very impressed with this band until I heard this song. All of a sudden their music makes sense to me and dig most of their catalog.
8Gospel
The Moon Is a Dead World

Congradulations...you've hit bottom. Honestly just the bass in this song got me to pay attention to what at first seemed like just another screamo record. Then you notice the amazing drum work and all of a sudden the whole album fits together and is basically perfect.
9Head Like a Kite
Random Portraits of the Home Movie

A dime and cigarette. What mostly is a very creative experimental album does throw in this one catchy song so you keep coming back...the whole album is good we get it.
10Janelle Monae
The ArchAndroid

tightrope. Kept coming back for the dance party and finally started to appreciate the story the album is trying to tell.
11Jawbreaker
Dear You

Sluttering. Album is very monotone at first listen but at least one song rises above the fray. You get used to the style and suddenly its all good.
12Jenny Lewis
Acid Tongue

See Fernando. In hindsight most of the songs are good but it took this track for me to spend enough time with the album to realize it.
13Jose Gonzalez
Veneer

Heartbeats. Same problem as 5. Had this album for a long time but it isn't till I heard this song in a movie soundtrack that I went back to spend time with what turns out is a great record.
14Lou Reed
Transformer

Walk on the wild side. And all the colored girls say doo do do doo do...
15The Lonely Forest
Arrows

We sing in time. Who knew they made more good music than just this one song.
16Norma Jean
Meridional

Anthem of the angry brides. I came for the chorus but I stay for everything else.
17Sleater-Kinney
The Woods

modern girl. Such simple guitar playing gets stuck in my head. As it turns out most of their albums are pre good.
18Steve Earle
The Low Highway

Invisible. Something about double tracked vocals during a chorus just sounds right. The rest they say is history.
19Tad
Inhaler

Just bought the farm. The album rocks hard but this song also includes rhythm.
20...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
Source Tags & Codes

Another morning stoner. It didn't take long but just a few plays for this song got me to dig the whole album.
21Archers of Loaf
White Trash Heroes

Title track. It wasn't till the last song on the album that I had my Keanu Reeves' "whooaaa" moment.
22Bad Brains
Bad Brains

banned in DC. It takes a minute eventually this song reveals the bands' greatness to you.
