I admit that I would love to be able to share with her the delights of, say, Cult of Luna, but she's more into Christina Perri, Bastille and whatnot. And I can deal with that. That said, she said to me one day that I should listen to an Avril Lavigne/Chad Kroeger song and I have never felt more disappointed.

I'd be bored if I dated someone who liked everything I did. not sure if it's me being a masochist, but I'm kinda attracted and like it if girl wants to drag me to a Taylor Swift concert or to a country show. Girl I'm talking to loves country, Ive introduced her to some alt country I like (Ryan Adams, Wilco, Lord Huron) and I've grown to appreciate some of the stuff she likes.

JWT155 02.18.16	I mean, music is a big HUGE part of my life but it very rarely leaks into most of my friendships and relationships. My ex used to let me listen to music in peace all the time and catch up with new albums and the new girl I'm talking to, although she doesn't like a lot of the stuff I do is willing to go to a show if I invite her; likewise I'm fine with going to a country show if she wants me to tag along with her friends. Music can be important to you and also be a respected and minimal part of a romantic relationship, i mean I hope music isn't the cornerstone of any of my future relationships but just a piece of many interests that connects you with someone else.

JWT155 02.18.16	@Conmaniac: I think part of being in a relationship is loving someone for who they are, flaws/differences and all. I think if you find the right person they can respect and look past you loving something they feel indifferent about. Hell I love sports, few of the girls I've dated have shared the same interests but they're happy when my team wins, sad when they lose and love tagging along for games. Likewise I usually can't stand country music, but if i loved someone who did I'd go with them to country shows because i care about them and making them happy and being involved with their passions.
Sinternet 02.18.16	there's points to be made for both opinions but if your choice of entertainment, be it music, tv, movies, books, games or whatever is not something shared by your SO it's hard to think of it as anything but limiting i guess it depends on how much value you place on your tastes as to whether having different tastes affects possible or pre-existing relationships, ultimately if you don't care that your SO likes different things then i doubt it will make much of a difference and vice versa

I can be very involved with woodworking, does that mean my future wife has to love being in the shop building stuff with me as well? Sometimes hobbies are a great outlet in a relationship to escape and I think sharing too much in common can hinder your passions being an escape from reality. Do I want my GF to always go to Metal shows or would I like to get out with the guys while she's out with her friends?

Go Knicks. And honestly, I'm more shocked and humbled someone who couldn't care less about basketball got us Knicks tickets than someone who loves it, and that's what I guess I'm getting at with being with someone who may not love your passions but wants to be a participant.

JWT155 02.18.16	I feel like if I met someone with a very similar taste as me, we'd end up bickering over small details: "OMG you think Kid A is better than OK Computer, bullshit". Sometimes it's nice to be with someone who's like "Oh you like Radiohead, that's cool!" and not argue. I know I get really heated on my music opinions and I'd probably just endlessly argue with a girl over small differences and it would just tarnish what we have in common.
Sinternet 02.18.16	you make a good point, but music as a whole is more of an interest than a hobby. your example of woodworking is probably fairly niche and not so much of a popular activity, whilst 99% of people enjoy music and have their own taste i totally agree that you need an outlet/space in a relationship and a hobby is a good way of getting it, but it depends completely on the relationship. each relationship i've been in has been with someone who is also my best friend at the time, and as such means i could enjoy their company in both a romantic and social way and so the qualities i look for in a friend are also there in my SO

JWT155 02.18.16	Nothing's more unattractive than building your life around someone else. People are attracted to others who seem to have their shit together. My eyes perk up when I see a girl who has successful career, does yoga, has a large group of friends and has passions. That's attractive. Likewise I'm in a dart league, basketball league, many different group of friends and I'm always out going to shows, restaurants, traveling etc. Be you, have hobbies and someone will be attracted to the fact that you have passions and aren't just someone living in your parents basement.

I made it a point years ago to try to stay away from girls that didn't like at least decent music or that weren't open to exploring new genres. Luckily, those girls generally aren't my type anyway it seems. My girlfriend now- and you guys, Ov included- have been my gateway into black metal.
