JigglyPDiddy
02.09.16 | yeh |
EvoHavok
02.09.16 | Band destroys. DSS (5) and Kisou (9) too low, though. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.09.16 | I really love Kisou and it hurt me to put it that low. I really think I should put it higher, too. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.09.16 | Fixed. But I stand by Gauze above Dum Spiro Spero. haha |
EvoHavok
02.09.16 | Fair enough. I've been working on a ranked list too, but wanted to add some descriptions to it, so it's been delayed due to other things I've been doing. It should be up in the coming weeks. It's gonna be pretty different from yours, that much I can say xD. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.09.16 | Can't wait to see it! :-) |
DrGonzo1937
02.09.16 | Completely disagree, but an interesting list. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.09.16 | Withering is not 1 so I'm happy :3 |
Gameofmetal
02.09.16 | only heard their latest three but those seem to be in the right order here |
CalculatingInfinity
02.09.16 | DSS>> |
JigglyPDiddy
02.09.16 | Yeah, Uroboros is 1 because eff yeah. :-) and thanks, Gonzo! How would you rank them? |
DrGonzo1937
02.10.16 | These days it would probably be:
1. Uroboros [R&E] (no exceptions)
2. Dum Spiro Spero
3. Arche
4. Withered to Death
5. Guaze
6. Vulgar
7. Marrow of a Bone
8. Kisou
9. Macabre
The t/t on Macabre is a masterpiece, but the album as a whole is dated to hell; so many bad j-rock melodies in there. lol |
CalculatingInfinity
02.10.16 | Most people go Uroboros but I will still say forever more that DSS is superior. And ye Gonzo Macabre is a giant step down from the superb Gauze. |
porcupinetheater
02.10.16 | Kisou and Vulgar need way more love.
1 + 2 are 1 + 2, though. |
DrGonzo1937
02.10.16 | Kisou is great, definitely, but even that suffers from the odd dodgy j-rock formula. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.11.16 | Nice to see so many Diru fans on the site! |
eaglefan1998
02.11.16 | I recently stumbled on uroboros and it was pretty damn impressive, easily the best visual kei album I've ever heard (if you van even call it that). What album should I check out next? |
JigglyPDiddy
02.11.16 | I'd call Uroboros more of a Melodeath record, but sweet! You should go for Dum Spiro Spero and/or Arche next if you liked that sound from the band. |
Angelboros
02.11.16 | I still stand by Vulgar being the band's worst, personally, but in no way am I saying it's bad at all. 6 and 8 are underrated, although I can see why those two records in particular would be tough to stomach (comparatively speaking).
Neat ranking, w/e. |
EvoHavok
02.11.16 | @eagle
Yep, DSS and Arche are your best bets, maybe even try the Unraveling EP (preferably the version with the Macabre remake). |
JigglyPDiddy
02.11.16 | thank you, you beautiful angel. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.12.16 | "I'd call Uroboros more of a Melodeath record"
Wat? Also Eagle I hope that was the remastered version of Uroboros. |
DrGonzo1937
02.12.16 | "Nice to see so many Diru fans on the site!"
You're telling me. There was barely a handful of fans when I came on here, now there's a healthy amount of fans to have a discussion - which is great! |
CalculatingInfinity
02.12.16 | Hell ya and with their work rate they'll be plenty to talk about. Jesus I can't wait for Arche at Budokan. |
DrGonzo1937
02.12.16 | Hopefully we get a new single this year, maybe even a new album announcement. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.12.16 | Did you read on their official site there's a new single in July? They're doing 3 themed tours in Japan and recording this year, new album maybe next year or early year after that. |
Angelboros
02.12.16 | Oh, fuck, new Diru single?
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/JexHxFn0Km8/maxresdefault.jpg |
EvoHavok
02.12.16 | Yeah, there's no "hopefully", we really get one. I kinda wish they wouldn't have announced it so early, now I can't wait for it. |
DrGonzo1937
02.12.16 | I did not know this! Although, it's to be expected, as they tend to do two year touring cycles with drip-fed singles leading to an album.
Bring it. |
DrGonzo1937
02.12.16 | Jesus, the wait for July will break me : ' ( |
CalculatingInfinity
02.12.16 | I'm pumped for the single but I'm even more excited for Arche at Budokan, DDS at Budokan was incredible so I can't wait for this one. Gonna be one hell of a year for them. |
Flugmorph
02.12.16 | Why are j-metal bands so freakin accessible |
EvoHavok
02.12.16 | Hmm, it depends. DSS wasn't too accessible to many people, although I got into it easily. |
JohnFire
02.12.16 | Never managed to listen to the first three, but here we go:
Vulgar
Uroboros
Withering to Death
The Marrow of a Bone
Dum Spiro Spero
Arche
Still, even Arche is at least 3.5. Love that band. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.12.16 | @Jiggly: Bump DSS :P |
CalculatingInfinity
02.12.16 | @John: Jam Gauze ASAP, it's essential. |
EvoHavok
02.12.16 | @John
Hmm, I love Marrow, but seeing it over DSS and Arche is so weird lol. |
DrGonzo1937
02.13.16 | Yeah, the last three LP's are lightyeats ahead of anything else they've done. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.13.16 | I'd say The Unraveling matched them toe to toe and Gauze almost does (Dr my boi you still need to watch that Gauze live ;)) |
JigglyPDiddy
02.13.16 | There you go, babes. Oh and sorry for my absence. I only get on here when I have spare time. I'm currently trying to finish my art major. Anywho, I agree that Dir En Grey is a very accessible band. By a "Melodeath record" I meant that it's a borderline Melodic Death Metal album, yet that description fails to really conjure up their whole sound. Oh, well. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.13.16 | By the way, yes, Arche tops DSS for me. Don't burn me at the stake. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.13.16 | Eh it's your opinion, Arche is so good anyway. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.13.16 | Yassss, very good. |
EvoHavok
02.13.16 | Oh, you changed your mind on DSS lol. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.13.16 | Confession: Un Deux>Vinushka |
JigglyPDiddy
02.13.16 | Yeah, re-listened to DSS while painting two days ago. It was a pleasurable experience to say the least. |
EvoHavok
02.13.16 | Also, Vulgar is not the worst. Don't listen to Angelboros hah.
Wtf Calc ;-;. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.13.16 | DSS just gets better and better and better, also ye Vulgar definitely isn't the worst. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.13.16 | Haha sorry I fucking love Un Deux so much, that track is sheer perfection as an opener and a statement of Arche's intent. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.13.16 | Un Deux is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo perfect omg |
JigglyPDiddy
02.13.16 | And I like Marrow just a little bit more than Vulgar. |
Angelboros
02.13.16 | "And I like Marrow just a little bit more than Vulgar."
This dude gets it. I know I'm gonna sound anal here, but that still isn't a bad album. Vulgar is one of those records with a few awesome songs ("Obscure" ain't one of them ;)), a couple fine tunes, and then about three or four stinkers. I feel that Macabre has aged better than Diru's fourth LP, though that's not really saying much. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.13.16 | Macabre aged way better than Vulgar. Agreed. Vulgar for the most part is fine, but I feel like people hype it up a lot due to Obscure being in its tracklisting. Obscure is okay, and the chorus is great but it's not even one of their best tracks or one of the best tracks on that album. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.13.16 | "Macabre aged way better than Vulgar"
What the fuck? That was kinda dated the day it came out. Also Obscure is incredible and one of the top 3 on it. |
Angelboros
02.13.16 | Obscure (ha!) only ever got popular because of the graphic PV. Without the video, the song wouldn't be nearly as noteworthy IMO. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.13.16 | Not denying a big part of it is because of the PV but the song backs up its praise. |
EvoHavok
02.13.16 | Yes, Vulgar may have its nu-metal-ish moments, but it holds up better for me. Also, the remade tracks from the Macabre album just sound so much better than the originals. |
Angelboros
02.13.16 | Drain Away, Kasumi, and Amber are songs I usually never not come back to off album #4. I'd like to see the former get a modern remake (jfc, I'm not referring to Kasumi since that already received one), frankly. |
DrGonzo1937
02.13.16 | I don't doubt Obscure got big because of its music video, but it still goes hard. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.13.16 | Macabre and I have a weird history. I hated that album upon first listen as a teen. But the more I listened, the more I liked what I heard. It was the other way around with Vulgar. I don't hate the album by any means, quite the contrary. But nonetheless, Macabre still holds up better for me. To each their own, obviously. It's only my opinion. Haha |
JigglyPDiddy
02.13.16 | The Obscure PV is so cheesy nowadays. |
Angelboros
02.13.16 | That one does take the longest to grow on a person, tbqh. I could say the same thing about Kisou. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.13.16 | Kisou's fucking great. I still say Jessica was written thinking of me. (that's my name) |
Angelboros
02.13.16 | Jessica's one of my favorite Diru tunes. Not really an all-time fav per se, but it's quite a recognizable song. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.13.16 | It's kawaii as fuck. One of my fav PVs by them. haha |
CalculatingInfinity
02.13.16 | "The Obscure PV is so cheesy nowadays."
It is, without a doubt the best music video they will ever do. Still my favorite music video to this day. Saying it's cheesy is ridiculous, such a well made video with an atmosphere that will never be replicated. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.13.16 | It is cheesy, though. lol The scene I like the best is the one with baby-head-apple-thing-eating geisha. My favorite PV is probably Vinushka. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.13.16 | There is nothing cheesy about it, at all. Also ye that's definitely the best part of the PV. Me and Evo just watched AQA Vol.2, fucking ruled :D |
EvoHavok
02.13.16 | I think the word "cheesy" is more inappropriately used than "pretentious" nowadays (not implying that the PV is either of them) |
JigglyPDiddy
02.14.16 | I think my choice of words was way off, agreed. But I wouldn't say it was pretentious. It's more like...when you watch a horror movie so many times that the scare factor just dies out, y'know? I lost sleep because of the Obscure PV in my teens. But now I see it and go like "meh, it's not that big a deal anymore." |
CalculatingInfinity
02.14.16 | That is evident to anything really however that ignores how incredible well done and put together the video is. The atmosphere that video conjures when everything slows down to a crawl, the woman looking at the baby's head on the tree and Kyo twitching uncontrollably is incredible. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.14.16 | His twitching is fucking on point. hahaha |
Angelboros
02.14.16 | Well, their motto isn't "Japanese Zombie Heroez" for no reason LOL |
JigglyPDiddy
02.14.16 | best thread ever, 'nuff said haha |
CalculatingInfinity
02.14.16 | Well on AQA Vol 1 they literally did dress up like zombies :3 |
JigglyPDiddy
02.29.16 | After re-listening to Macabre today for the...666th time? I can finally admit that: Okay, it is pretty dated. And yes, the production is rather disjointed throughout the record. Still an amazing record by all means, but I've been enjoying Kisou and Vulgar a little bit more lately. |
heck
02.29.16 | I'd switch 1 and 2 but otherwise this is pretty much exactly my ranking |
JigglyPDiddy
02.29.16 | Nah, Uroboros stays on top for me. |
heck
02.29.16 | understandable, they're definitely close for me but I just like Arche a hair more overall |
JigglyPDiddy
02.29.16 | Arche is fucking glorious. From head to toe. I still get chills when the drumming on Un Deux kicks in. |
DrGonzo1937
02.29.16 | Yeah, it is a banging way to kick-off the album. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.29.16 | I'd actually say Arche is their biggest accomplishment, after having to force to switch style they did it so gracefully and it didn't feel like a compromise at all. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.29.16 | Ugh, you're breaking my ovaries here. lol I'm kind of inclining onto Arche as 1. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING |
CalculatingInfinity
03.01.16 | Because it's better than Uroboros ;) |
JigglyPDiddy
03.02.16 | [jessica is dead] |
JigglyPDiddy
03.07.16 | Edited. This is where I'm currently at. |
