Quartuma 4/2015

i'm not gonna make a typical year-end list this year but here's the last addition to my series of quarterly reports
25To Vanish Tomorrow
Shadow Lake

post-hardcore. the album artwork is kinda cool but an absolute hell to listen through. the band tries to be epic but the vocals are some of the worst i've ever heard, the lyrics are just cringeworthy and the instrumentally the band follows every cliché in the genre. avoid at all costs. 1.4/5
24Brokelords.
The Great Woods Drop-Off

experimental stuff. really fucking random 10-minute one-song ep with not a single sign of cohesion by the sputnik user hercloudwalkers. one of the least enjoyable 10 minutes i've had all year tbh. 1.8/5
23Fightstar
Behind the Devil's Back

alt metal. solid screams but everything else about this is either blatantly ripping off deftones or just being generic annoying alt rock. 2.1/5
22Intronaut
The Direction of Last Things

prog metal. from a technical standpoint this is great but the whole thing sounds so frustratingly calculated and devoid of passion. 2.5/5
21Unsettled
Sleep Deprived

melodic hardcore. nothing special here, this is probably what touché amoré sounded like in 2006 or something. 3/5
20Kauan
Sorni Nai

post-rock/doom. nice try but i just really don't feel this band quite manages to capture the creepiness of the awful accident in the ural mountains. 3/5
19Boston Manor
Saudade

emo pop. surprisingly solid for what it is as the melodies are great and the vocals actually don't suck. unfortunately the last track is just annoying to the ears. 3.1/5
18Foxing
Dealer

twinkly emo. foxing lose what made them so interesting on the albatross in favor of a more subtle approach. the atmosphere they provide is nice enough but i can't help but feel frustrated about how inoffensive this is. 3.1/5
17Birds in Row
Personal War

melodic hardcore. not nearly as powerful as you, me and the violence and a real disappointment for me. i dig this kind of music for sure but this isn't anything special apart from a few parts. 3.2/5
16Dragged Into Sunlight / Gnaw Their Tongues
N.V.

death/doom metal. holy fucking shit this is heavy. however, that's pretty much all it is able to provide. the atmosphere definitely could've been creepier. 3.2/5
15Alaska (USA)
Shrine

emo revival. not necessarily anything original (the band sounds so much like tiny moving parts) but still a very lovely album with some excellent guitar work. 3.4/5
14Deafheaven
New Bermuda

blackgaze. i really like the fact that deafheaven didn't want to create "sunbather pt. 2" in the slightest (no matter how much i loved that album) and new bermuda has some amazing moments but it's also a real shame this album has so many noticeable flaws that prevent this from getting to sunbather's level. 3.5/5
13Panopticon
Autumn Eternal

atmospheric black metal. panopticon continues to get better with incorporating the folk into his music and creates his most consistent album in a long time. however, the highs on this one aren't quite as strong as on roads to the north. 3.6/5
12Anna Von Hausswolff
The Miraculous

ambient pop or whatever. a damn great, beautiful album. i'm really glad i jammed this even though it's not necessarily my usual type of music. 3.7/5
11Cult Leader
Lightless Walk

gazacore. a band formed by former gaza members sounds pretty much exactly like gaza wow. this slaps but i kinda hoped they would've tried something different on here. 3.7/5
10The Saddest Landscape
Darkness Forgives

screamo. tsl continue on the path of less aggressive music but instrumental-wise this is certainly better than after the lights. the vocals still rule too but they just don't seem to have the same power as they used to. 3.75/5
9Moving Mountains/Prawn
Split

twinkly emo. i'm probably being a bit too generous for this but even though neither band is providing anything new they both manage to sound really beautiful and surprisingly fresh. 3.8/5
8Shirokuma
Light Dies / Colours Fade

screamo. very melodic, skramz with fairly aggressive vocals. they aren't reinventing the wheel or anything but the production is perfect for this. 3.8/5
7Totem Skin
Weltschmerz

sludgy hardcore. melodic, heavy as fuck, very converge-y. what's not to like about this? 3.8/5
6So Hideous
Laurestine

blackgaze/post-rock. not quite what i expected from this band (surprisingly warm atmosphere here) but nevertheless this is sweet, extremely epic stuff. 3.9/5
5Sever
Sever

screamo. raw, energetic and technically quite impressive music by a talented russian skramz band. sounds kinda like a more lo-fi kidcrash with deeper screams. 3.9/5
4Bonehouse (UK)
Tomorrow's Worn Out Blues

uk emo. one of the most interesting new discoveries for me, bonehouse provide a shit ton of sweet melodies and touchingly desperate vocals. 3.9/5
3boring bathtimes
An Otherwise Clouded Mind

drone/lo-fi emo. wicked stuff newbac, a very slow-burning but incredibly devastating album. 4/5
2Loma Prieta
Self Portrait

screamo. loma prieta are back with their most melodic outing to date which is quite surprising considering how up to this point they've been getting gradually heavier and more dissonant. nevertheless, the band proves that they definitely can pull this style off too. 4/5
1Piri Reis/Coma Regalia
split

emoviolence/screamo. wooooooow never heard of this piri reis band before but their side absolutely rips, ridiculously violent. coma regalia already released one of my favorite screamo albums of the year and their side is great too but not quite the level i hoped, especially after the fantastic piri reis side. 4/5
