| 15 Favorite Movies of the 2010s
We're hitting the mid-decade point, so in the spirit of 2015, here's 15 of my favorites, loosely ranked. 1 is 1, but everything after is a little more ambiguous. | | 1 | The Turin Horse
Complete emotional breakdown: the movie.
God is dead. Creation is becoming undone. Time has as little meaning as your worthless life. | | 2 | The Forbidden Room
Now that Béla Tarr's retired, Guy Maddin's the best we got going. | | 3 | Hard To Be A God
The grimiest movie ever made. | | 4 | Free Fall
The one by György Pálfi.
Hilarious surreal whatchamacallit. | | 5 | Only God Forgives
Lack of plot development ≠ Lack of substance | | 6 | Stray Dogs
The only movie that can bring me to tears with a 10 minute scene of a guy making out with produce in a parking garage. | | 7 | A Field In England
That trip scene is GOAT | | 8 | Certified Copy
Starts off like one of those typical walk-and-talk sort of indies, before it pulls the rug out and everything you think you know may or may not be a lie. | | 9 | Under The Skin
Beautiful questioning of humanity, empathy, and existence | | 10 | The Strange Color Of Your Body's Tears
Resurrects those kick ass giallo films, rips their "decipherable" plots out and throws them in a shredder, squares the camera firmly on the eyes, and gels the shit out of anything and everything. A beautifully freaky enigma. | | 11 | Post Tenebras Lux
Best Neil Young cover in history. Also bathhouse orgies, self-decapitation, and a naked glowing-red cow demon. | | 12 | Horse Money
What it feels like to die, maybe? | | 13 | The Act Of Killing
"The banality of evil" | | 14 | Holy Motors
I could happily just watch Denis Lavant walking around a city for hours. The fact that Holy Motors is so much more is just another feather in its cap. | | 15 | Kill List
Really makes the horror horrifying. | |

12.18.15 | i havent even seen 15 movies this decade | Sinternet
12.18.15 | Only seen 5 but these all sound decent | Rowan5215
12.18.15 | Gotta check more of this list but 15 wasn't all that | porcupinetheater
12.18.15 | Suggested idea for Hard to Be a God screening: bring some family and friends to watch it with you, and intermittently spit on them throughout the movie.
15 was almost something else, but that one sequence beating in the "Librarian's" head with a hammer, where you keep expecting a cut, but the camera just holds on this uncomfortably long shot as his skull is caved in is arguably the most visceral single moment I've seen from the decade. | Rowan5215
12.18.15 | Doesn't make up for the arbitrary plot contrivances unfortunately I agree it was superbly acted tho | SgtShock
12.19.15 | Glad somebody else liked only God forgives | initforthelisten
12.19.15 | I'd place Drive above Only God Forgives any day, but awesome list, some great picks. Still haven't seen The Turin Horse. | porcupinetheater
12.19.15 | I certainly love me some Drive as well, but OGF always seems so much more committed to its own interior space; there's so much visual metaphor for sexual repression/Oedipal ideas it's practically bursting at the seams.
Not to mention the use of doorways, which I think is some of the best in cinema history. | initforthelisten
12.19.15 | I don't disagree. In fact, you're making me want to watch it again... Only seen it once, to be honest. | zaruyache
12.19.15 | I liked that one Pokemon one. | porcupinetheater
12.19.15 | Rango? | tectactoe
02.26.20 | Nice list - now that the second-half of the decade is over, do you have an update for us? A few of these made my decade list as well. THE TURIN HORSE, THE FORBIDDEN ROOM, STRAY DOGS, and HOLY MOTORS are all in the Top 30 (FORBIDDEN ROOM is Top 5), and UNDER THE SKIN and CERTIFIED COPY within the Top 60. Not as in love with THE ACT OF KILLING, HORSE MONEY, or HARD TO BE A GOD as most like-minded cinephiles, but there are bound to be some big discrepancies, obviously. Only one I can't stand is ONLY GOD FORGIVES, but that's one of those films that practically begs to be divisive, clearly love-it-or-hate-it by nature, and I happen to be on the hate-it side. (I got lots of strange looks for putting both GERRY and THE BROWN BUNNY atop my Best of the 00s List, similarly divisive films.) |
