Brilliant, overlooked metal albums you haven't heard

Here are some of the most underrated gems in metal I have come across, that you most likely haven't heard yet.
1Wuthering Heights
The Shadow Cabinet

Proggressive power/folk metal. Sounds like an odd, yet awesome combination, doesn't it? Truth to be told, it is. What these danish guys manages to pull off in The Shadow Cabinet is some of the most unique power metal you'll ever hear, with an incredible display of passion. They manage to completely avoid the cheesy elements and remain epic throughout the entire album, without becoming pretentious. Highly recommended to people who even despises power metal.
2Theory In Practice
The Armageddon Theories

Technical Death metal. An absolute monster with some of the craziest riffing I've ever heard in the genre. Songs are chaotic as hell, yet brilliantly structured. Things gets shreddy as well but not to the point where it would be considered wank at all. Guitar leads and drums are some of the best in the genre too.
3Allegiance (SWE)
Hymn Till Hangagud

Blackened death metal. Similar to Necrophobic with beastly tremolo riffing, and a bit of melodic touches as well. Very dark, haunting and majestic. Any fan of blackened DM should listen to this.
4Followbane
Dead Fantasia

Symphonic melodic death metal. Japan's got some interesting metal acts indeed, but this album has to be my favorite from them. Extremely melodic throughout the whole thing, with some superb guitar and symphonic work. An epic journey for sure.
5Mithotyn
In The Sign Of The Ravens

Black/Viking metal. Possibly the best viking metal album. The melodies are so majestic sounding it makes your mind imagine a picture of how vikings looted back in the days. Oh, and it got some excellent choir work as well.
6The Crown
Eternal Death

Melodic death metal. Criminally underrated melodeath from the 90's. How these guys never got more credit is beyond me. Tremolo riffing dominates the album, but it's so much more than that. Songs gets desperate, sad, uplifting and epic sounding in a wonderful package.
7Winterhorde
Nebula

Symphonic/melodic black metal. A metal band from Israel? Sounds kind of out ouf place, but Winterhorde's debut album is a complete success in every way. The amount of intensity Winterhorde delivers on Nebula is a rare sight for a band releasing their first effort. The tremolo riffing is absolutely relentless, so is the drumming. And thanks to the symphonic elements, it adds a more dynamic sense to the already furious experience. Highly recommended for fans of Emperor etc.
8Armageddon (SWE)
Crossing The Rubicon

Melodic Death metal. Chris Amott's (ex-Arch Enemy) side project. Most interesting thing about this album is actually the non-metal instrumentals, which displays what a great musician Chris really is.
Funeral in Space might be the most beautiful thing he's ever written. Other than that, there is interesting guitar work, clever drumming and brilliant vocal performance going on too.
9Ansur
Warring Factions

Proggressive metal/rock. An odd, yet beautiful album. Similar to Between the Buried and Me, with tons of different influences. Might be considired "run-of-the-mill-proggressive", but that doesn't take away the fact that it's still a very fun and enjoyable listen.
10Aquilus
Griseus

Black/Folk/Classical(?) metal. One hell of an experience. Really hard to describe this kind of music, but when I say epic, I mean EPIC. The orchestral work that's presented here sounds a lot like what an old classical composer would write. Add a very raw guitar tone which plays beautiful chord progressions, acoustic interludes with folky twists, an extremely creepy vocal performance with lengthy songs and you have Griseus, a very remarkable and unique piece of work.
11Sunless Rise
Promo

Melodic death metal. Actually an EP but whatever. The musicianship shown on this EP is nothing but extraordinary. Although borrowing influences from bands such as Children of Bodom, Skyfire etc, these young russians play their own game. And how. Thanks to the atmospheric keyboards, the songs gets an incredible depth to them hardly seen in todays scene, which they would already have since the guitar work is so flowy and so dynamic. Add an insane drum performance, and a powerful choir vocal work to that and you have what might be the finest EP in all of metal. Not bad for a band that aren't even signed to a label.
