| Bad debuts by great bands
I love debut albums, but some great band's debut album just didn't cut it, not all are terrible, but not the style or caliber of their later work.
What are your favorites, or I mean least favorites | | 1 | | The Grateful Dead The Grateful Dead
Had some great songs on the album, but performed them terribly, the band was embarrassed by the result. The only saving grace is a partial Viola Lee Blues | | 2 | | Bob Dylan Bob Dylan
I think they just took the 13 worst songs he was performing at that point and told him to hurry up and get it over with. All covers as well. | | 3 | | Rush Rush
Not very bad, but not Rush, has Working Man so can't be all bad | | 4 | | Judas Priest Rocka Rolla
Same as Rush, not terrible, but not Priest really | | 5 | | Motorhead Motörhead
I love Motorhead, and some songs on the album, but bad production, and light years from the follow up Overkill | | 6 | | The Mothers of Invention Freak Out!
The album is all over the place, which for Zappa is normal, however, never gets on track, some cool stuff, but Absolutely Free nails this format | | 7 | | Alice Cooper Pretties For You
Never got this album, very weird. Maybe because Zappa produced it. Definitely not what made them huge, the follow up Easy Action is much better | |

10.14.15 | I for one enjoy 3 but it's pretty far from what they would later accomplish | tempest--
10.14.15 | Rocka Rolla goes hard | porcupinetheater
10.14.15 | More than half of the list titled "Bad debuts by great bands" has albums summarized by a general "eh, it's not bad, just not one of their best." Probably should rename to something like disappointing debuts. | Avagantamos
10.14.15 | autechre - incunabula
not bad, just nowhere near any of their other albums imo | rufinthefury
10.14.15 | I personally love it, but for most people A to B Life by mewithoutYou is one of their worst albums. I don't understand those people but hey, that's a popular opinion. | Relinquished
10.14.15 | incunabula is real good so, even though avggotnotomatos is right, it wouldn't fit this list | CaimanJesus
10.14.15 | Converge's debut was pretty meh | rufinthefury
10.14.15 | American Football's first album is both their best and their worst. | Pch101
10.14.15 | Agreed with the Dead and Rush. But Pablo Honey belongs at the top of this list. | manosg
10.14.15 | I sincerely enjoy each and every album on this list, with the exception of 7 which I haven't listened. But now your list makes me want to check it haha. | InFlamesWeThrash666
10.14.15 | Paradise Lost | DoofusWainwright
10.14.15 | The National | Frippertronics
10.14.15 | nailed it but you're wrong with 6 | chemicalmarriage
10.14.15 | Pantera | wham49
10.14.15 | I do like all of these guys, but as a whole what the band did after, make these look weak, yes porcupine, didn't know how to phrase it, but it could be.
great bands who release an ok debut but go on to do great things and leave the weak debut in the dust | IGetMyMSG
10.14.15 | Deerhunter's debut is pretty sub-par | CamiloG
10.14.15 | Anathema and Katatonia imo. | NeroCorleone80
10.14.15 | Anathema's debut is their second best | Alastor
10.14.15 | it's funny that The Ripper, Epitaph and Tyrant were all rejected by the producer of Rocka Rolla, so they ended up on Sad Wings. Seriously, how wrong can you be. | evilford
10.14.15 | "cynic"
LOL | CamiloG
10.14.15 | @Nero Is like their seventh in my list. It is just my opinion though | wham49
10.14.15 | ya, wish Sad wings was their debut, also, Anthem of the Sun, and Overkill, the sophomore releases from all these bands are killer except Rush I think their first true rush album is carress |
