Quartuma 3/2015

haven't listened to as much new music this quarter as in the previous ones but here we go
18Defeater
Abandoned

melodic hardcore.
defeater being defeater once again. this isn't bad or anything but they have gotten incredibly stale.
2.6/5
17The Caulfield Cult
Half Empty

emo/alt rock.
fairly unimpressive singaporean(!) emo. everything about this is ok but nothing more.
2.8/5
16Low
Ones and Sixes

dream pop/slowcore.
very pretty on the surface and the melodies are cool but this didn't really make me feel anything.
2.9/5
15Entzauberung
Entzauberung

screamo.
kinda run-of-the-mill screamo with an unpleasing production. it's still pretty enjoyable.
3/5
14Fuck the Facts
Desire Will Rot

grind/death metal.
nothing special here but it's a good thing fuck the facts are trying to be serious. i feel they have the capacity to do a lot better than this.
3/5
13Marietta
As It Were

midwest emo.
so this is what it sounds like to rip off every midwest emo band ever (yeah i still dig it).
3.1/5
12te:rs
te:rs

emo/post-hardcore.
some really solid emo from the german newcomers, albeit not mind-blowing or anything.
3.3/5
11The World Is a Beautiful Place...
Harmlessness

twinkly daddies.
they lost the majority of their charm after the departure of tom diaz but this turned out to be surprisingly solid, given that i haven't really dug much of their stuff after he left the band.
3.4/5
10Suis La Lune
Distance/Closure

screamo/post-rock.
well this is a beaut. it's pretty meandering at times but suis la lune always delivers.
3.5/5
9Caspian
Dust and Disquiet

post-rock.
caspian release another worthwhile, if quite an inconsistent record. the title track slays super hard.
3.6/5
8Black Wing
...Is Doomed

shoegaze/chillwave.
quite an intriguing experiment by have a nice life frontman dan barrett but i have to admit this "digital instruments only" project is my least fave of his. dan's vocals and lyrics are just as brooding and ethereal as ever but i feel there's not enough emphasis on them in this album. some gems on here for sure though.
3.6/5
7Foxes
Organic Vessels

emo/post-hardcore.
mewithoutyou + post-rock tinged screamo. rocks hard.
3.8/5
6The World Is a Beautiful Place...
Death To New Years

twinkly daddies.
a big surprise after the lackluster spoken-word ep's which might be why i enjoy this so much. both songs are better than most of the stuff on harmlessness.
3.9/5
5Heavy Weather
Heavy Weather

experimental post-rock/emo.
one of the most interesting emo releases this year. it's mathy, atmospheric, sometimes even aggressive. too bad this ep is very short but this is band to keep an eye on.
4/5
4Planks
Perished Bodies

crust punk/post-metal.
a dark, heavy and melancholic swan song by the german underground post-metal band.
4/5
3Ampere/Raein
Split

screamo.
holy crap i didn't expect this to be as good as it is. both bands are at their best, every skramz lover should check this out.
4.1/5
2Deathdealer.
Tragically Human State

hardcore.
heavy-as-fuck drum and bass hardcore punk with terrific, heartfelt lyrics.
4.1/5
1Coma Regalia
Ours Is The Cause Most Noble

screamo.
a truly heartbreaking album by coma regalia, one of the most prolific screamo bands around. this is pretty much everything i love about the genre. the production isn't anything to write home about though but that's the only real flaw about this.
4.2/5
