08.24.15 My Top 15 Sonic Youth Albums

My Top 15 Sonic Youth Albums

Sonic Youth, my favorite band of all-time. They've had 15 studio albums, some of which I'd call classics, amazing, or forgettable. Here's me showcasing which of their albums I think are classics, amazing, or forgettable. Let me know if you agree, or totally disagree with these spots.
15Sonic Youth
Experimental Jet Set, Trash, and No Star

This album was just so painfully average. Nothing stood out with the exception of the opener and the closer. Sorry. 4/10

Favorite Tracks: Winner's Blues, Sweet Shine
14Sonic Youth
The Eternal

This album has its moments, but overall doesn't do much for me. But when it does have its moments, it's pretty amazing. 6/10

Favorite Tracks: Anti-Orgasm, Malibu Gas Station, What We Know, Massage the History
13Sonic Youth
Murray Street

Yes, I know, you love this album. Everyone does. I... like it, but it doesn't stand out much as these 12 albums below it. Sorry. 6/10

Favorite Tracks: The Empty Page, Disconnection Notice
12Sonic Youth
NYC Ghosts & Flowers

Yup, I like this album more than Murray Street. Don't hurt me please. Anyways, this albums has more than a few good moments. 7/10

Favorite Tracks: Free City Rhymes, Nevermind, Small Flowers Crack Concrete, NYC Ghosts and Flowers
11Sonic Youth
A Thousand Leaves

I really liked this album, but it got boring in more than a few parts. Regardless, most of the album can make up for it. And Hoarfrost is such an amazing song. 7/10

Favorite Tracks: Contre Le Sexisme, Sunday, Hoarfrost, French Tickler, Hits of Sunshine, Karen Koltrane, Ineffable Me
10Sonic Youth
Dirty

Yeah, you've all heard this album and at least like a couple tracks from this thing. 8/10

Favorite Tracks: 100%, Swimsuit Issue, Theresa's Sound-World, Wish Fulfillment, Sugar Kane, Youth Against Fascism, On The Strip
9Sonic Youth
Rather Ripped

Great follow-up to Sonic Nurse. Probably their most accessible. It's hard to dislike this thing. And listening to Pink Steam for the first time was such an experience. 8/10

Favorite Tracks: Reena, Incinerate, Do You Believe in Rapture?, Jams Run Free, Lights Out, The Neutral, Pink Steam
8Sonic Youth
Goo

Oh my, is this album amazing. Never a dull moment on this one. Pretty much a preview to all of the great music which would be released from 1991-1993. 9/10

Favorite Tracks: Dirty Boots, Tunic, Kool Thing, Mote, Disappearer, Cinderella's Big Score, Titanium Expose
7Sonic Youth
Washing Machine

This album so damn near perfect. This album makes their album which came out the year before, Experimental Jet Set, look like complete trash. It brought so much more new stuff to the SY discography, we gotta at least respect it for that. And The Diamond Sea... just wow. 9/10

Favorite Tracks: Becuz, Junkie's Promise, Washing Machine, Unwind, Little Trouble Girl, No Queen Blues, The Diamond Sea
6Sonic Youth
Sonic Nurse

Well, this is where the perfect albums start. Yeah, I think they have 6 perfect albums, I love them. Anyways, Sonic Nurse is such an amazing album. Track after track, I'm enjoying this thing. And I gotta say... dude ranch nurse... sexy track 10/10

5Sonic Youth
Daydream Nation

You've all heard this album. It might be your favorite Sonic Youth album. Or, favorite album of the 80's. Or somewhere in your top 10 of all-time. It seems like everyone loves this thing. Especially Pitchfork. I love this album too. I mean it's the classic indie-alternative album. Everyone loves Teenage Riot or Silver Rocket or 'Cross the Breeze, and for good reason. It's just a super fun album. Fast riffs, distorted guitars, lyrics about teenage angst, what more can you ask for? Without this album, we wouldn't have so many great artists out there. Heck, even Kurt Cobain said this album was an influence. This albums has created just such a huge impact on music that it is by default a classic. 10/10

4Sonic Youth
Sister

Oh come on, who doesn't like Sister? Along with Daydream Nation, it's great for a rainy night cruize in the city. Just listen to Catholic Block, fits perfectly right? And who could forget Schizophrenia? I'll never forget putting this album on for the first time being amazed by the fact that this album was made in 1987. It just sounds so ahead of it's time. My favorite off of the album will always be Pacific Coast Highway. A very aggressive song, the type of song that would have been left back in 1983 with Confusion is Sex. The rest of the album isn't disappointing either. It's scattered with a bunch of hidden classics that only the big Sonic Youth fans remember. Yeah, this thing is a classic. 10/10

3Sonic Youth
Bad Moon Rising

If Daydream Nation and Sister kept you in a happy mood, be prepared for a complete mood change. ATMOSPHERE is so strong on this album. Throughout, you get a very lonely or depressing vibe. Right when that static at the end of Brave Men Run transitions into Society is a Hole, you understand what the rest of the album would be like. The album only works as a holistic piece, so make sure you're doing Bad Moon Rising right. Make sure you're listening to it during a very cloudy evening outside just to do the album justice. 10/10

2Sonic Youth
Confusion Is Sex

You've probably already guessed that I love this album just based off of my username. Why do I love this album? It's just so damn enjoyable. Yeah, that's a pretty much "no shit" statement but, I just love every single song so much. I've heard it probably over 50x now. Just every song gets me. With every listen, the album just gets better and better. Nothing dull about this album whatsoever. I'll understand if you don't like this thing, it's not for everyone. I just love this thing so much. And the atmosphere is just so strong, you know what I mean. I can't praise this thing enough. 10/10

1Sonic Youth
EVOL

Why is this my favorite Sonic Youth album? Well, it's one of the first Sonic Youth records I've heard, it's the beginning of their 3 innovative alt-rock albums (EVOL, Sister, Daydream Nation), it has the strongest atmosphere of any of their records, and it has a lot of sentimental value for me. I'll always remember first listening to that opening of Tom Violence. Yeah, this thing is a classic. 10/10
