07.31.15 | and as for Jared Leto we'll see but my hopes are very high indeed based on what we know
discuss |
JWT155
07.31.15 | Eh, although I appreciate Hammill's joker, it's hard for me to lump him in with the live action movie stars. |
Rowan5215
07.31.15 | agreed that movie has one of the laziest plot twists in history although Hardy was characteristically excellent |
Rowan5215
07.31.15 | because he's animated-only or what JWT? also time to edit this list cos it got fucked up rrrr's incoming |
JWT155
07.31.15 | Voice acting takes talent but it's essentially 2 separate mediums; part of what made Heath and Jack great jokers was their screen presence, mannerisms and the fact they physically embodied the role. Not saying Hammill couldn't do those things as well, but it's apples and oranges. |
BandNewbac
07.31.15 | for me its either Mark Hamill or Jack Nicholson. Ledger was great but very over credited for being "the" joker. |
Rowan5215
07.31.15 | Voice acting arguably takes more talent imo as you have to compensate for the fact that you can't physically give off mannerisms like that. Which is why Hamill's so damn good because you can hear in his voice how he would move and look and etc
hey jordy, read Watchmen, thanks
|
BandNewbac
07.31.15 | agree with Rowan to be honest, especially for a character like the joker where so much of his spirit lies in how he talks and not how he presents himself. which is part of what makes the Jared Leto joker look even worse from what i've seen so far. |
Rowan5215
07.31.15 | oh fuckin' sweet good work
Rorschach is my favourite character to somewhat fall under the "comic book hero" umbrella |
Rowan5215
07.31.15 | really cos I think Leto's got the mannerisms down (in his own unique interpretation of course) |
BandNewbac
07.31.15 | i'm not so convinced but i'm keeping an open mind though because we haven't seen much of course.
i just think the design is horrible. |
demigod!
07.31.15 | mark hamill is a god |
BandNewbac
07.31.15 | mark hamill is a god [2] |
demigod!
07.31.15 | apparently he's gonna be doing joker again on some special (Y) |
Rowan5215
07.31.15 | yea the tattoos are horrible but I don't really care bout that if the acting is good which it will be |
AmericanFlagAsh
07.31.15 | "pretend The Dark Knight Rises never happened"
why?? |
RadicalEd
07.31.15 | Leto's joker in the trailers looked like he was going for a similar vibe than Heath Ledger and I disapprove of that, because he will never be able to top such an iconic performance. |
dbizzles
07.31.15 | 'how good is The Dark Knight Returns tho, probably best comic ever (i've only read 2 comics smh)'
I hope the other comic you read was The Killing Joke, because that shit is fantastic. |
Rowan5215
07.31.15 | yeah the Killing Joke is in every way a classic and essentially perfect |
BandNewbac
07.31.15 | I don't mind the tattoos at first glance but writing "damaged" on his head gives me the impression that for the whole film they will be forcing the idea that the joker is crazy down our throats and not letting the character and the dialogue therein speak for itself. but as i say i can't really judge a this point having only heard one line of dialogue.
Leto is an incredible actor granted, and his acting in the film will be on parr with many of his other great performances for sure. |
BandNewbac
07.31.15 | killing joke is my favourite Batman story by a long shot. |
RadicalEd
07.31.15 | I have not read a comic in my life. |
BandNewbac
07.31.15 | get out |
DinosaurJones
07.31.15 | I don't read a lot of comics, and I've never read a Batman comic, but I've seen/heard so many people talk about The Killing Joke that I think I'll have to check it out. |
evilford
07.31.15 | ledger was perfect. TDN is one of my favorite movies cuz it's a great, fun movie but mainly because of ledger. his nihilistic insanity is indescribably entertaining |
RadicalEd
07.31.15 | "get out"
How about no.
Ledger was great yeah, to this day I'm convince that TDNR would have worked a thousand times better with him as a villain. (nothing against tom hardys performance, but Bane was just underwritten) |
evilford
07.31.15 | TDNR was good but not nearly as good as the first two |
BandNewbac
07.31.15 | "Bane was underwritten"
the whole bloody movie was underwritten to be honest |
RadicalEd
07.31.15 | "the whole bloody movie was underwritten to be honest"
DHISHI DHISI RASA. DHISHI DHISHI RASA! DHISHI DHISHI RASA |

07.31.15 | Agreed with ford. Nice list |
BandNewbac
07.31.15 | i'm sorry don't hurt me |
RadicalEd
07.31.15 | "i'm sorry don't hurt me"
Lol. I agree though. The third movie was plagued by pacing problmes, plotholes and general franchise exhaustion. It's still a good flick with plenty of acting talent and some kickass moments though. |
Rowan5215
07.31.15 | Even if you're not a comic guy you have everything to gain by reading Killing Joke
Bane was great but the movie was poorly written, cliche and boring tbh. Agreed that with Joker in Talia's place it could have been magnificent
Also just gonna quickly say Cillian's Scarecrow was terrific in all three |
RadicalEd
07.31.15 | Cillian is terrific in everything though. Have you seen Sunshine? |
BandNewbac
07.31.15 | Oh yeah for sure scarecrow was perfect. that's one of the reasons why Batman Begins remains my favourite in the trilogy.
|
BandNewbac
07.31.15 | dude sunshine is immense until the last act, goes downhill so fast. |
RadicalEd
07.31.15 | Yeah that stuff with the Sun Man is a bit silly. I can overlook that because the first 3/4 are so good. |
tempest--
07.31.15 | w0w you had to get a stab in at Skywalker didn't u haha
Jack Nicholson is one of the only good things in that film, I p much hate everything else about it |
JWT155
07.31.15 | But dat Batman soundtrack by Prince. |
Rowan5215
08.01.15 | Yea Sunshine is very good indeed Cillian is one of the more underappeciated actors around right now. THERE'S NOTHING TO FEAR EXCEPT FEAR ITSELF
sorry Lloyd he sucked pretty hard *shrug emoji* have you seen it recently? Rewatching changed my opinion pretty hard |
PayneTiger777
08.01.15 | Don't forget John DiMaggio from Under the Red Hood. He did a pretty decent job as the Joker. Michael Emerson also did a good job in The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 animated film. I thought they both did a better job than Troy Baker since he basically mimicked Hamill's Joker and didn't try anything new. |
Rowan5215
08.01.15 | Haven't seen either so I can't comment but agreed about Troy |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.01.15 | i cant say ranking voice actors amongst live action actors is really logical, its a completely different niche. doesnt make much sense. obviously hamill is the greatest joker voice actor of all time but you cant really put him in with live action actors (altho if u made me id still put him above any of them, but its just not fair.)
heath is the best joker so far for me but i kind of hate the Nolan batman trilogy and even tho he was a great joker for what those movies demanded, he was not a very good joker if you look at it from a comic accuracy perspective
also Under the Red Hood joker wasnt that good.
Michael Emerson as dark knight returns part ii joker was amazing however |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.01.15 | "Voice acting arguably takes more talent imo as you have to compensate for the fact that you can't physically give off mannerisms like that."
arguably....
no. they are completely different and both have different demands. equally challenging in different ways. |
Rowan5215
08.01.15 | Yea it's not really logical but this is just a personal favourites list rather than claiming any sort of objectivity or anything so I don't mind comparing apples and oranges
He was definitely less true to the comics than his peers but that's not a downside for me so much. taking a well established character like the Joker and interpreting it your own way takes a lot of balls and he's probably the most creative Joker
I'll have to check out Emerson's Joker |
Rowan5215
08.01.15 | It's hard to say equally IMO. As a quasi-professional actor myself I definitely know the demands of physically inhabiting a character and how much work it takes to do it as well as Heath did. To me taking away that visual element means you have to work that extra mile to inhabit the character through your voice. Of course I'm not demeaning either field of work, immense respect to those who inhabit both |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.01.15 | well tbh ive always argued that apples and oranges are extremely comparable. the saying doesnt really work. if u said it was like comparing apples and intergalactic space particles id understand but apples and oranges really have a shit-load in common when u think about it.
but yea i know what you're saying haha
"To me taking away that visual element means you have to work that extra mile to inhabit the character through your voice."
yeah but you could just as easily argue that to add the visual element means you have to work that extra mile to inhabit the character through your voice AND your body language and you wouldnt be wrong. |
Rowan5215
08.01.15 | Apples and left-leaning humanist charity workers
Yea I mean neither argument is wrong of course. Just the way I see it based on experience
|
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.01.15 | well as a not professional actor i can safely say that seeing an actor do an amazing job in live action takes my breath away more than any voice actor ever can regardless of how good their performance is.
that being said...
mark hamill is still >>> all of these guys |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.01.15 | also, when ur a voice actor you have to rely on the animators doing a good job with body language etc too and you have to work off that, its restrictive. if they fuck up and do a bad job, no matter how good your voice acting is it wont deliver and you have no control over that |
Rowan5215
08.01.15 | Yea I'm not saying a fantastic voice performance will necessarily be more enjoyable than a fantastic live action one, more that it's harder to achieve the former
That's very true but in the same sense live action actors are restricted by what their bodies can physically do while a voice actor isn't. Both share other restrictions too like the quality of script and dialogue etc |
kris.
08.01.15 | sounds about right but yea hamill is the joker and always will be. hes coming back for that killing joke animated movie which is gonna be great |
Rowan5215
08.01.15 | Killing Joke movie is confirmed? awww sheeeeit that's gonna be mint |
kris.
08.01.15 | http://io9.com/mark-hamill-will-voice-the-joker-one-more-time-for-the-1720786432

08.01.15 | jared leto's going to be amazing |
kris.
08.01.15 | nah not yet |
Rowan5215
08.01.15 | Agreed I'm expecting big things from Leto
Would love for Conroy to return idk how likely it is tho |
Rowan5215
07.24.16 | bump for that Killing Joke movie, rules |
Valkoor952
07.24.16 | I fucking hate the new joker look. |
