| The Gaslight Anthem ranked
just a quick little list bc I love making lists. | | 1 | | The Gaslight Anthem Sink or Swim
In many classic cases, like Aerosmith or Van Halen, the band's first album is considered their best. There are many counterexamples; i.e. Radiohead, with Pablo Honey being among the lowest ranked Radiohead LP's. However, the originality, rawness, and musicianship of Sink Or Swim place it above the rest. Take a listen to the lead section in "We Came To Dance", and the rhythm section in "1930". Brian's raspy vocals and pseudo-nostalgic lyrics referencing times before he was born take center stage on the album and divert their style from other bands in the genre. Alex Rosamilia's guitar work is sprinkled throughout and wows the listener with amplified Cure-inspired leads. One of the only downsides is that the style varies slightly, with some songs sounding rawer and less finished than others (take "Wooderson" for example). This can come off as either premature or diverse, you choose. Overall, this album is not to be forgotten. | | 2 | | The Gaslight Anthem The '59 Sound
Let us not forget which album undeniably created a name for Gaslight and really put them out there. The '59 Sound is essentially the themes and musicianship of Sink Or Swim with catchier hooks and unmatchable production. Consider this the closest 2nd on a list in Sputnik history. Theoretically the catchier hooks and unmatchable production would place this ahead of Sink Or Swim, but this also causes the album to not have much diversity. In 12 songs, there are no acoustics, no change of time signature and the majority of the songs follow a C, F, Am, G pattern. Regardless, this album is a classic with too many highlights to count. | | 3 | | The Gaslight Anthem Handwritten
Handwritten picks up where The '59 Sound left off with anthemic gems more than every other track and lasting impressions. This album has the perfect amount of variety and does not lose the listener's interest. They could not have hoped for a better answer to American Slang. Handwritten is very much a mature album, and although it is not as raw or folk-punky as albums before it, as a whole it contains anthems with great imagery, fabulous lines and impressive musicianship across the board. | | 4 | | The Gaslight Anthem Get Hurt
I must admit, this album was a grower, for me at least. The pros of Get Hurt I noticed were its clean production, its promise to be a different direction for Gaslight and nothing of a "Handwritten pt 2" or "'59 Sound epilogue". There are gems, yes, but a lot of the tracks (though well promoted in the band's live setlists) are extremely underwhelming. Highlights include the poignant "1,000 Years", laid back title track, "Helter Skeleton" with its fast-paced verses and toned-down chorus, and immaculate, anthemic closer "Dark Places". | | 5 | | The Gaslight Anthem American Slang
Usually, when a band comes around to releasing its third album, they are expected to either prove themselves or get lost. I sincerely hope that The Gaslight Anthem did not lose any of their fanbase with the release of American Slang. Many of these songs just did not pique my interest. I don't know what it is about American Slang. It could be the even glossier production, it could be the absence of flow, it could be that the songs are just lower quality. The album as a whole just doesn't do it for me, although it does have some favorites. The title track is great, as is the uptempo "Orphans". I know this album has its fans and I don't mean to piss them off. I could just never dig it. | |
