05.01.15 | I mean, it was a great and fun movie... but once you get over the really good jokes and the cool action you notice it's plot points re-hash the first, the storyline itself plays out like every Marvel movie, the Hulk/Black Widow romance thing was shoehorned, and just some other stuff that wasn't that big of a problem in other Marvel movies... It's still a fun movie regardless.
Oh yeah, and that scene where Bruce falls face first on Black Widow's boobs was so anime that it hurt. |

+ Hulk is treated wonderfully, and was probably the best aspect of the film for me. His whole dillemma of being conflicted about hurting civilians and those close to him is handled with just the right amount of delicacy and ambition on Whedon's part to become very engaging, and at times heartbreaking.
+ Most of the action setpieces and choreography far exceeded the first film's, as well as everyone getting their fair share of screen time to show off their abilities.
+ Everyone still bounces off each other like rubber coated in jelly.
+ The deeply psychological dream sequences Cap, Nat and Thor go through after Wanda possesses them are a great mixture of character development, atmosphere and tone. Nat in particular was really interesting to get to know beyond her usual snarky exterior.
+ General cinematography and composition have also gotten a boost, and doesn't feel like it's constantly shoving in your face how awesome it is that all the heroes are together.
+ Whedon realised how much of a meme he's been turned into and toned down on the constant quips from every character.
+ No Pepper.
- After the first half goes the distance with trying to push character development to the forefront and explore who these people are (for once), the second half more or less focuses entirely on plot, and the circumstances behind Ultron's evil plan. It's a giant waste of potential considering how drastic the change of tone and character focus was.
- Most of the second act and the entirety of the third act are inexcusable in how much they borrow from the first film, right down to Tony having to destroy a WMD falling from the sky while the rest of the team battle an army of mooks on the ground.
- Ultron as a whole. On top of his existence being amounted to "oopsie poopsies Tony done made a killer robot lul", his whole TO SAVE THE EARTH WE MUST DESTROY THE EARTH is fairly generic and he pretty much has nothing going for him in the personality and dialogue department with how hard it is for him to keep a consistent tone.
- The film really amounts to fuck all in terms of how it fits into the universe, and feels really complacent from a story perspective.
- Pierro's death was stupid and forced. |

05.02.15 | I thought the movie was great. Had its good and bad points sure but it was definitely entertaining and visually stunning. The humour was still there but it was more restrained than in the first. The plot was a bit similar to the original, and bits did go overboard with the destruction etc. Also Ultrons character doesn't really make sense for a 'robot' with artificial intelligence. He loses track of his words, stutters and stuff more or less like a human would which doesn't really add up. But I thought the characters were great, the sub stories with black widow and Banner, and Hawkeyes family were interesting. Still recommend the movie for sure. |

movie was good but really unbalanced in terms of character (they nailed Hulk completely, but you could've taken out Cap with absolutely no effect because he did fuck-all) and some tone inconsistencies. Hopefully Civil War lives up to the promise of a darker Marvel movie (aka is close to Daredevil's level) |

solid 6.5 or 7
i'm glad they at least included quicksilver throughout the movie instead of just having him show up, do some super OP shit and then get left behind with no good explanation a la days of future past. aaron taylor johnson was also surprisingly tolerable with a russian accent
the action was decent but mostly forgettable aside from the hulkbuster scene which unsurprisingly was great. i didn't see the trailers past the first couple so i only heard about the vision being in from people freaking out about his reveal in the trailer (which was fucking stupid on marvel's part and they should've left it out so comic book readers could at least be pleasantly surprised). enjoyed seeing him get to fuck some shit up too towards the end
the best scenes for me were the more chilled out ones, like when they're all hanging out and take turns trying to lift thor's hammer. or when vision busts out of the case and just stops in front of the window and stares at the lights |

He's definitely the lamest because even though Black Widow also has no powers she's at least a cool Jason Bourne-style upfront melee character, which is always cool--the fact that she has sex appeal also definitely helped her out (as who doesn't love a butt-kicking female in the current "all boys club" that is most action films today?).
I liked that they gave Hawk more parts but used his human-ness to give the film more character, without trying to force him to look super badass in combat--which would never have worked. |

dude Fisk is the best villain they've made by like such a long distance it's ridiculous. Was also a huge fan of the way they developed Murdock's character and basically stayed away from over-the-top antics that usually characterise Marvel (except for the Stick episode and the finale which were the worst of the season for that reason). Overall they fucking nailed it |
