03.15.15 | Elysian Blaze - Blood Geometry is brilliant if you're willing to devote just over 2 hours of your life to listening to it. Ruins of Beverast are also great for a slightly BM-doom
Failing that, Noctus' Ethereal Shroud is amazing

03.15.15 | I'd recommend Doom 1 & 2, third one was kinda lame, but there's a new one coming out soon bro |
cryptside
03.15.15 | Nice man, glad to see you're getting into it. Tons of great variety in the genre as well.
Electric Wizard [2] - Dopethrone specifically. Super oppressive but amazing stuff.
4 is great, still spin that at least once a month.

None of this sounds deterring in the slightest. I like a good long listen. BM/doom sounds awesome and I've already jammed Noctus' album.
"Have you listened to Ahab - Call of the Wretched Sea? It's some good whale-doom."
I haven't but whale-doom sounds awesome

03.15.15 | Awesome. I also appreciate the specific genre designation on the side there emester. |
emester
03.15.15 | But out of anything I rec'd you Esoteric is probably the most essential listen of them all. Just make sure you have around two hours free since it is one hell of a lengthy album. Its my favorite Funeral Doom album if not my favorite album of Doom in general. |
cryptside
03.15.15 | Funeral doom in general is just really awesome. |
Archelirion
03.15.15 | Ea make pretty damn fine funeral doom as well. Check out their first three in particular. |
Archelirion
03.15.15 | Yeah, funeral doom is best doom. |
Gameofmetal
03.15.15 | So where does My Dying Bride sit in the spectrum of doom? Did they set a bit of a blueprint with their sound or are they fairly outside the norm or what?
Also what exactly is funeral doom specifically? |
emester
03.15.15 | I really dont know what I enjoy more, the crushing atmosphere and raw emotion of Funeral Doom or the grandiose of the Traditional/Epic Doom. I like them both equally I guess |
Archelirion
03.15.15 | As much as I love listening to doom I've never really gotten into the traditional side of it nearly as much.
Also, best way I can describe funeral doom is slow (reaaaally slow), a crushing atmosphere and usually (but not always) featuring very low growled vocals. |

03.15.15 | "So where does My Dying Bride sit in the spectrum of doom? Did they set a bit of a blueprint with their sound or are they fairly outside the norm or what?"
They're considered one of the pioneers of doom/death along with Anathema and Paradise Lost. They combined doom metal riffing with death vocals and a dark gothic mood. Due to those influences, it's not your typical doom metal band.
Based on My Dying Bride, I'd rec you:
Anathema - Eternity
Paradise Lost - Icon
Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear (you should definitely check this one as it has a combination of female vocals with male grunts)
Katatonia - Brave Murder Day
The Gathering - Mandylion (lighter side of doom with incredible female vox)
Amorphis - Tales from the Thousand Lakes (a few doom influences. cannot be categorized as a doom record but definitely give it a shot)
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses
Macbeth - Romantic Tragedy's Crescendo (if you enjoyed Theatre of Tragedy, check this one too)
Saturnus - Paradise Belongs to You
Estatic Fear - Somnium Obmutum
The 3rd and the Mortal - Tears Laid in Earth |
EvoHavok
03.15.15 | ^What manos rec'd +
Draconian - Arcane Rain Fell
Dolorian - When All The Laughter Has Gone
In The Silence - A Fair Dream Gone Mad (not doom, but cool dark atmosphere, similar to newer Katatonia, worth a shot) |
manosg
03.15.15 | ^Need to check Dolorian. Don't know the band but your 4.5 makes the album very appealing. |

03.15.15 | Esoteric - The Pernicious Enigma
Thergothon - Stream From the Heavens
diSEMBOWELMENT - Transcendence into the Peripheral
Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet
Oh and Swallow the Sun - The Morning Never Came :P |
EvoHavok
03.15.15 | It's worth hearing, manos.
Also, I was sure I forgot something and that is Swallow the Sun. |
parksungjoon
03.15.15 | Oh yeah Dolorian are great for sure.
For something more Doom/Post-Metal, I'd recommend Minsk and Battle of Mice.
For some filthy Death/Doom, you might want to check out Rippikoulu and Timeghoul.
I'd also recommend early Amorphis, early Tiamat and early Orphaned Land (don't be discouraged by their comparatively low scores on this site. :P)
The Angelic Process have one of the most crushing atmospheres I've ever heard, but I'm not sure to what extent they'd classify as Doom.
Surprised no one's rec'd Cathedral yet, definitely check them out. Also Daylight Dies. |
PlatonicMushroom
03.15.15 | Shape of Despair - Angels of Distress (funeral doom) |
