Archelirion 09.10.14	I've listened to Deathspell a fair amount, just didn't put them in my list for some bizarre reason! Thought I'd start at the top, so Kataxu it is. Sounding VERY good so far, though it sounds like the sort of thing that requires a few listens, which is always a good thing. Thanks everyone for suggestions, should keep me busy for a while! My objectivity rating is likely about to take a serious knock.

Archelirion 09.10.14	I have indeed listened to Om, and yes, it is a phenomenal piece of music. Your description of Falls of Rauros, by the way, made me want to listen to that as soon as possible. Only listened to Aura for the first time since it's release yesterday, and I really enjoyed it this time round. Think it'll get a few more plays now. Haha, I can understand why you thought it was a joke, and it was a bit :P But the idea behind it was there, and it seems to have worked given the size of the list being accumulated!

Archelirion 09.10.14	Haha, I know Silencer and Nattramn's disturbing-as-fuck vocals! Good stuff though, if I'm in the mood for it. Just seen Fen's 'The Malediction Fields' listed. Reminds me of a mistake I made a few years ago, when I listened to it on t'internet, forgot the title, and then ordered a sort of progressive rock Fen that was pretty poor instead. Bad times.

Keyblade 09.10.14	Malediction Fields was prolly the first bm album I really liked. Also dl'd it on a whim cuz of a review I read around the time it came out. Really good intro to the genre imo, even if it is flawed

Archelirion 09.10.14	First one I remember liking was Behemoth's 'Demigod', but then I didn't touch the genre from then - instead, got lost in a mix of Slipknot, SOAD and Papa Roach. Those were the days. Since then. the first one must have been The Mantle, with Malediction Fields leading to that. The difference being that I remembered the name of The Mantle :/
Keyblade 09.10.14	Idk maybe it was the keys, or the exaggerated atmosphere that hooked me and eased me into the genre. Two Hunters is another one, mostly because of Cleansing which remains one of my favorite bm songs to this day

Rail 09.10.14	Speaking of classics or classics-to-be, you need to pick up Negative Plane's Stained Glass Revelations. For me, it's up there with Dead as Dreams as the best of USBM.

I'm not a complete newbie to the genre, but certainly haven't listened to enough to even pretend I'm an expert on it, particularly with 90's BM. I have no issues with the abrasiveness or anything, it was mainly the production values on the Bathory album that got me (but I expect that's because I'm a privileged 'new-age' BM listener with production bestowed by the gods... or something.)

Archelirion 09.10.14	I'm pretty happy with the mix, actually. Gives me a good selection from different eras and different regions to choose from, although I agree that the beginning is a good place to start. Speaking of which, is Venom worth a listen?
emester 09.10.14	for great dsbm, Shining and Gris are bands to check. For probably the greatest Black metal Record in the last several years, check Deathspell Omega's Paracletus (even though everyone probably already recd it to you)
SCREAM! 09.10.14	@Aaron They're worth it just to see how the genre really got kicked off (and because they do have some pretty killer songs) but they're essentially a heavy metal/thrash band and sound nothing like what we know as BM today. That's also why I didn't rec any 1st wave bands like Von, Blasphemy, etc because they essentially sound like DM with bad production (great bands nonetheless though).
