porcupinetheater
08.31.16 | It's the cinematic version of an all capital letter online rant, and that's backed up by the way it handles its scenes and characters (the fight in the bar with the critic that overly simplifies the artist/critic dynamic and paints critics as irrelevant vultures which is backed up by the film's own presentation of the critic as an almost inhuman shit sack with no recognizable qualities other than spite is a particularly egregious wannabe edgy teenage temper tantrum of an example) |

Valkoor952
08.31.16 | Lmao are you fucking serious, I thought you were fucking around.
There is seriously something wrong if you think tickets = whether or not the movie is liked. |
Rik VII
08.31.16 | wow, this discussion's gone to shit.
there's tons of awesome movies that aren't really honored by most people, and that's because a lot of pieces of art are unique. and a lot of people don't like unique things. they're not for everyone, but if they were for everyone, it wouldn't be art, because it would only exist because it wants to please every potential viewer. that won't ever work.
anyway, Shining is highly regarded all the way through. don't know how you could up with an example like that. same goes for nearly every Kubrick movie. he's largely considered one of the best directors ever. (I don't agree with that though)
and ticket sales got nothing to do with appreciation. it's only got to do with marketing. everyone wanted to see how Suicide Squad, BvS and even stuff like 50sog came around, so they watched it even though they knew they wouldn't be good. I for one don't know a lot of people who liked them. but I know a lot of people who saw them.

porcupinetheater
08.31.16 | Also, oh my God Valkoor, are you serious right now?
First of all, the assumption that a movie's messages are objective truth and that anyone is "right or wrong" regarding interpretation is such a self-righteous and boneheaded thing to think in the first place.
Secondly, the Awards and mass appeal argument is fucking ridiculous. Miley Cyrus is loved by the majority of the public and has a lot of Grammys. Therefore, she's one of the best music artists around. (Not to rip on any Cyrus fans). |
guitarded_chuck
08.31.16 | imagine having your ego become so large and self-protecting that you truly live your life thinking that people that don't share exactly the same taste as you in things simply do not understand it on your level
i wonder if anyone has fallen down that sort of a hole so completely and deeply that there is no chance of digging out of it
lets use this premise to make an artsy movie guys |
Sinternet

porcupinetheater
08.31.16 | Premise has already been used for the 2k16 US presidential campaign |
Valkoor952
08.31.16 | Fist of all comparing Grammy's to Academy Awards, really ?
Second of all, just because Miley has a fanbase of 15 year olds doesn't mean her music is widely acclaimed, it's not. Everyone knows its mostly shit.
You can be right or wrong regarding interpretation. That's why it's called interpretation. And who said the messages have to be objective truth ? |
porcupinetheater
08.31.16 | If you think there's some big chasm between the Grammy's and the Oscars, you're naïve as all shit.
And if the messages aren't objective, then simply by following the nature of that statement, there can't be right or wrong interpretations. It's all contingent on what the audience pulls from a movie. If someone feels something watching a movie, that feeling is valid, and thus creates a message that the film conveys. After an artist releases a piece of work, it is not the artist but the audience who owns the meaning and the interpretation.
Also, back to the top - The Academy Awards are just a shitshow of politics, money, popularity contests, and calling in favors. If you think there's any legitimacy to them (or Awards shows that compare inherently incompatible and diverse styles of art in general), then you're living in a nice little fantasy. |
miketunneyiscool123
08.31.16 | hows about a movie about an artist to be literal? |
Valkoor952
08.31.16 | You can say they are politics, corruption etc. but you can't deny that at least 80% of the movies that recieve them deserve them. Are you trying to tell me none of those movies deserve the awards they get ? It is not the greatest measurement of movie quality and you have to watch said movie to decide whether you like it or not, but it's a fact that the greatest movies have received those awards.I'm sure there are a million movies that are equally great and haven't recieved shit, but it just sounds like you're trying to discredit the ones that have. |
Rik VII
08.31.16 | "And if the messages aren't objective, then simply by following the nature of that statement, there can't be right or wrong interpretations."
hm yes, actually, I think so. Like, it is up to you what you make out of it, but that's only within a frame that's given by what's shown in the movie. Like, you won't be able to make Harry Potter a third reich propaganda movie in a reasonable way. there's a lot of room for interpretation, but not endless room imo. it's what I get to hear a lot as a literature student as well: you have to do the piece of art justice with your interpretation.
haven't seen Birdman though so I can't really say anything more specific.
also, yes, Academy Awards are america-centered shit, but most of the movies there are kinda well-done at the very least, so it's better than the Grammys imo. but like I said - not wanting to defend the Academy. |
Valkoor952
08.31.16 | Let's not do this, I'm still fucking tired from that Star Wars discussion. |
porcupinetheater
08.31.16 | Good movies that won best picture: All Quiet on the Western Front
It Happened One Night
Rebecca
Casablanca
Best Years of Our Lives
All About Eve
Marty
Bridge on the River Kwai
The Apartment
Lawrence of Arabia
In the Heat of the Night
Midnight Cowboy
All the ones from the 70s except Kramer vs. Kramer
Amadeus
Platoon
Silence of the Lambs
Unforgiven
American Beauty
No Country for Old Men
12 Years a Slave
Which is way less than even half (that are good)
The number that actually deserve to be called one of the best in their respective years is about 2-3. And almost none of my favorite films have ever gotten any Academy attention. It's a good starter barometer if you only watch Hollywood produced stuff, but the instant you start actually appreciating film as an art form, the Academy Awards are entirely meaningless.

08.31.16 | Yes but that's what you think, Joe down the street might think none of those deserve it, Andy might think all of them deserve it.
Anyways I didn't mean all the movies that won the awards deserved them, but they are still good goddamn movies. I can only think of 2-3 movies I can call shit that have been nominated or won anything. Anything else may not be amazing but it's on a good-enough-level.
Tbh I've never ever heard major complaining about the academy awards, there was some racial drama but other than that everyone is pretty happy with the movies involved. |

08.31.16 | Look who finally decided that differing opinions on movies are valid and not just a result of ignorance!
Just like, you know, you can love Birdman, and I can think it shits on everything good about cinema, and both those opinions can have equal validity! |
Valkoor952
08.31.16 | Look man I never stated that if you don't like something I do you're the wrong one. However I said that I think you didn't understand it BASED on your description of the movie. It's a different thing. |
porcupinetheater
08.31.16 | I haven't seen anything from you actually breaking down the movie to defend it on an analytical level |
guitarded_chuck
08.31.16 | why bother you wouldnt understand |
Valkoor952
08.31.16 | Did I say I did ? You did however, which is what prompted my response. |

08.31.16 | "I can see you clearly don't understand Birdman after providing specific examples delineating your point."
"I'm not going to explain anything on why this movie is good. I'm just going to parrot that I love it and y'all don't get it, that'll help my argument"

Tyler.
08.31.16 | Wow |
Valkoor952
08.31.16 | I really don't know what you want from me man, did you EVER ask for analysis from me ? You and chuck went on to rant about how i shit on everyone that doesn't like the same thing that i do and now all of a sudden I'm wrong because I didn't further my point. So every time I say I don't agree with you on any subject I have to lay down a detailed analysis on why I don't ? I didn't want to spend paragraphs talking about fucking Birdman in the first place which is why I didn't further my point. Fucking hell. |
guitarded_chuck
08.31.16 | you liked birdman, thought cloud atlas sucked, and havent even seen 2001
your opinions are hereby invalid :] |
Tyler.
08.31.16 | Piss off |
Valkoor952
08.31.16 | I'm just going to parrot"
Also it's good to know you're talking out of your ass since I mentioned that I love Birdman once, the "BIG" argument was about something entirely else so don't turn that shit around like it was that from the start. |
Valkoor952
08.31.16 | @guitarded
Is something wrong with everyone today ? WHERE did I say that shit about cloud atlas or said that i haven't watched 2001 ?! |
