You're not really wrong. All the classic 90's Emo could just be seen as Indie Rock. It was just a style with it's own scene and characteristics that became known as EMO. |

fightstar and early november aren't really emo. I don't think shiina is either at all but I don't listen to her.
empire! empire! play a style of emo that, yes, is closer to some indie rock you might think of. it fits under the larger emo umbrella, but it isn't really indicative of emo, if that makes sense.
still, if you want stuff that is emo in the way that empire! empire! is, check out these:
american football - american football
castevet - summer fences
youth pictures of florence henderson - unnoticeable in a tiny town, invisible in the city
owen - at home with owen
a bunny's caravan - draining puddles, retrieving treasures
most of those are from the 00s. emo started in the 90s, and was much more punk influenced. a few bands started playing stuff with much less aggression, much more lyric-focused, and people call it "midwestern emo" or "twinkly" or whatever, but don't feel like you have to use those terms for it.
the bands I listed play a more specific style of that, where they all kinda incorporate more of a focus on post-rock style crescendos, for the most part. |

and yeah just remember that this small, relatively recently popular style of emo isn't really all that indicative of the genre as a whole, too

and calling something screamo just cuz the singer screams is really wrong too

06.10.14 | yea I deleted it. there's an image of it somewhere because someone saved it but it's really tiny. it was basically 60-70 of the most essential emo albums in chronological order starting in the late 80s and detailing its rise / the different styles with like a paragraph for each album. |

I just didn't consider giving a lesson on a genre of music and its idiosyncrasies. Just kind of figured if enough interest was drawn from my recommendations, someone's own research and opinions would come along the way. |
