Favourite Moments In Music

Taking inspiration from (eg completely ripping off) ethics' ...fuk list, here are 50 of my favourite moments in music, from any genre. They're very loosely ranked with favourites around 1 and 50th favourites around 50 but its by no means definitive from 1 to 50. I tried to keep it to one moment per band but with certain bands I found this impossible - which bands I'm sure will come as a surprise to absolutely no-one. Aight here we go
50Underoath
Lost in the Sound of Separation

Desperate Times, Desperate Measures, 1:52-2:03. "God where've I been? I'm a terrible company with zero apologies and my God where have I been? Where have I been?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzP-rNpe0n4
49Syd Barrett
Opel

Opel, 3:48-5:53 "I'm tryyyyyyyiiing, I'm tryiiiiiiiiing, to fiiiiiiiind you, to fiiiiind you." The way that this song transitions from typical Syd Barrett fantasy-style to the most heart-wrenching and moving thing he ever recorded is nothing short of perfect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch3BfpZp8PI
48The Smashing Pumpkins
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

X.Y.U, 3:00-4:22. "AND IN THE EYES OF THE JACKAL I SAY KAAAAAAA-BOOOOM!" Greatest tempo change ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTzn1DtirDY
47Shihad
The General Electric

Pacifier, 2:55-4:03. "Come on let's take a look outside, come on let's take a look outside." The most simplistic and uplifting song ever made has a brilliantly upbeat ending. The chorus isn't far off making the list either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1XqbopXH5M
46Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
No More Shall We Part

Hallelujah, 6:43-7:43. "The tears are welling in my eyes again/I need twenty big buckets to catch them in/Twenty pretty girls to carry them down/And twenty deep holes to bury them in." The way this beautiful song fades out to only the female vocals is nothing short of astounding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHkZtD1NL4A
45Nine Inch Nails
Year Zero

Zero Sum, 3:40-4:32. "Shame on us, doomed from the start/May god have mercy on our dirty little hearts/Shame on us, for all we have done/And all we ever were, just zeroes and ones." Just transcendental. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJGQHCC62b0
44Evermore
Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show

Can You Hear Me?, 3:35-4:24. "Peace be the day/daaaaawniiing/Light in the winter I am/faaaaalliiiing." Easily one of the most beautiful bridges ever written, suitable for this emotional powerhouse of a closer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAjHYrdvG0Q
43The Hotelier
Home, Like NoPlace is There

Dendron, 1:14-1:18. "MAN I'M SORRY EVERY DAY!" The second shortest moment on this list but well deserved. So much passion in this one line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m732_djEIlA
42Thrice
The Alchemy Index Vols. III & IV

Daedalus, 4:10-5:38. "OH GOOOOODS WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME?" This is not the album version but somehow even better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhgbOUVJbNA
41The Wonder Years
The Greatest Generation

The Devil in my Bloodstream, 2:01-2:03. "I BET I'LL BE A FUCKING COWARD!" The shortest moment on this list but fuck it gets me every time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Spy-zkWHO4Y
40 The Dear Hunter
Act II: The Meaning of, & All Things Regarding Ms. Leading

Red Hands, 4:06-4:34. "Because you can't be caught red handed if you're not red handed/My darling, I would never say those words to you/I was pulling out my heart so I could pin it to my sleeve/On display for you to see I'm on displaaaaaay!" The cracks in his voice, the build, everything about this drops my jaw to the floor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFX08ssSsLI
39Coheed and Cambria
In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3

The Light & the Glass, 5:44-8:20. "YOUR FAAAAATHER'S DEAD HE PASSED IN HIS SLEEEEEEEEP/And I woke, to the sounds, of her cryiii-iiii-iii-iiiing/Pray for us all, pray for us all..." Fuck you because Coheed are awesome, and this is why. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjERdCJ_hto
38System of a Down
Steal this Album!

Mr. Jack, 3:52-4:07. "PUT YOUR HANDS UP GET OUT OF THE CAR, PUT YOUR HANDS UP GET OUT OF THE CAR, FUCK YOU PIG!!!!!!! FUCK YOU PIG!!!!!!" There is no single moment in music that inspires violence and action more than this one. It's like pure adrenaline. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uUruXmq_Kc
37Jimmy Eat World
Clarity

For Me This Is Heaven, 2:23-3:10. The first instrumental moment on the list. I can't get over the acoustic guitar/piano combo in this section. Too good to be true. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9E23PJbQbnE
36Jimmy Eat World
Chase this Light

Dizzy, 3:09-3:33. "You said you'd never have regrets, Jesus is there someone yet who got that wish? Did you get yours, babe?" First double for a band, this moment makes me cry like a little girl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkADQ6gPK0g
35Opeth
Blackwater Park

The Drapery Falls, 7:48-8:28. "Spiralling to the ground below/Like autumn leaves left in the wake to faaaaaaaaaade awaaaaaaaaaaaay." I only put this here to please Pleb. No but seriously, this is beautiful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcbrKshzYXQ
34Live
Throwing Copper

Pillar of Davidson, 5:58-6:46. "Here I am locking horns with the stallion/Failing to hold my head up I go back again/Pillar of davidson, feeling too hard to go down/Cheaper than all the souls he will walk upon/Deeper and deeper in love so I hold my head up/Cheaper than all the souls he will walk upon/Pillar of davidson, feeling too hard to go down/ooooh noo." I realise that's a long moment but also one of my favourite ending to any songs ever.
33Faith No More
King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime

King for a Day, 4:42-6:35. "Don't let me die with that silly look in my eyes." Speaking of incredible song endings, this takes the cake in every way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAUXPkx7gMI
32Powderfinger
Internationalist

Capoicity, 4:20-5:44. "A fragile bond has shaken loose/A secret love, a shrinking noose/Suffocated on the truth/Left with nothing, left with nothing." Despite being known as primarily a pop band, the Finger could write in more than one style, and this is one hell of a climax to a beautifully restrained track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZa8yL7z0JU
31The Smiths
The Queen is Dead

I Know it's Over, 4:10-5:50. "Oh motherrrr I can feeeeelllll the soil falling over my heaaaaaaddd." There are a spread of fantastic moments in the Smiths' discog but none quite as magnificent as this ending. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAJ_74tDZzU
30Deftones
Deftones

Bloody Cape, 3:04-3:38. "GOD HELP US GOD HELP US GOD HELP US GOOOODD!!!" I have no idea if those are the actual lyrics in this section or not but what a fucking ending. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lu5GvoAhnY8
29...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
Source Tags & Codes

How Near How Far, 2:23-3:07. "How near, how far/How lost they are/How near, how far/How lost they are." Just chilling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk8g-jFQWvo
28The Smiths
Meat is Murder

That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore, 1:34-1:53. "It was dark as I drove the point home/And on cold leather seats, well it suddenly struck me/I just might die with a smile on my face after all." I lied earlier, because this is a moment in their discog more magnificent than the end of I Know It's Over. Some of my favourite lyrics written by anyone ever right here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIyXJxPFVz4
27Radiohead
In Rainbows

Reckoner, 2:23-3:18. "Becaaaause we seeeparate like/Ripples on a blaaaaaank shooore/(In raiiiiinbooows)." Fuck me Thom you magnificent bastard, how do you do it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wCJPm19XYQ
26A Perfect Circle
eMOTIVe

Passive, 3:08-3:30. "Go ahead and play dead/I know that you can hear this/Go ahead and play dead/Why can't you turn and face me?/Why can't you turn and face me?/Why can't you turn and face me?/Why can't you turn and face me?/ YOU FUCKIN DISAPPOINT ME!" Woah... uhhh... damn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMe4kVNKvNk
25 Passenger
Divers and Submarines

Brick Walls, 1:49-3:20. "Cos we're banging our heads against brick walls/And the walls are hard and our heads are soft/It's a painful way to get attention/It's a painful way to get attention." Just listen to this and tell me that it doesn't destroy you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaxSRkyN4as
24The Sound of Animals Fighting
Lover, the Lord has Left Us...

The Heretic, 3:54-4:28. "Flesh is heretic/My body is a witch/I am burning it." The chorus of this song was close too, but this part gives me goosebumps for real. That one note he holds at the end tho https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ne_XzO4LJM
23U2
The Unforgettable Fire

Bad, 5:07-5:25. "I'm wiiide awake! I'm wiiiide awake! I'm wiiiide awake! I'm not sleeping." Because U2 rule and this is why. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgBtoiNxPyE
22The Beatles
Abbey Road

The End, 1:30-1:47. "And in the end/The love you take/Is equal to the loooove/You make." Best way to end a career? Damn right it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a_8F6gflxQ
21Manchester Orchestra
Mean Everything to Nothing

The River, 5:21-5:31. "And oh my GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDD let me see again!" Another short one but this is possibly the best note anyone's ever reached. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrSBLU1YQ0I
20Mr. Bungle
California

Goodbye Sober Day, 1:55-3:17. "Mmmmmmmmmmmmay your sun be blown out just liiiiiiike a candle may your seaaa burn liiiike taaaarrr....CHAK!/May your sky be rolled up like a scroll may your blue moooon driiiiip with bloooood... CHAK CHAK CHAKKA CHAKKA CHAKCHCKAHCKAHCKHA etc." The most mind-blowing moment in Patton's motherfucker of a discography: who can't get down to this part? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbA24Rn6TLQ
19John Frusciante
The Empyrean

Central, 2:22-end. "I'm dreading a time that is not near/As a man on a cross I have no fear/I can't believe these words I'm ssaaaayin/You gotta feel your lines you gotta feel your lines." Froosh going transcendental, especially with the solos towards the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guv6rjjJeiQ
18Devin Townsend Project
Ki

Ki, 4:18-6:34. "Here's a little riddle bout-a when I was a little toddle/Piddle in a puddle and my head was in a muddle/You can sing it when you're mad, you can sing it when you're sad/You can sing it in the shower, come along the latest's/Gaia to gaia to gaia to gaia to gaia to gaia/Everybody knows!" Just, fuck, this part. I could listen to it forever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gmLplFmUns
17The Receiving End of Sirens
Between the Heart and the Synapse

This Armistice, 4:00-4:52. "Oh how I've been teething/In light of your misleading/You caused this collapse/Between the heart and the synapse." Godly in every sense of the word. I'm running out of adjectives now. Sorry about that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5s8QQD-wzc8
16Lydia
Illuminate

Hospital, 2:17-2:31. "Now look, you've made a fool out of love/When all we want is to be enough/When all we want is to feel enough." Although this may be a Lydia song, this moment belongs to Aaron Marsh and his angelic voice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwsBzKtS-fU
15Copeland
Eat, Sleep, Repeat

The Last Time He Saw Dorie, 2:53-3:17. Only the second instrumental moment so far. The best use of strings I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. The female vocal section which leads into it is also beyond belief. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NLjtuxS5w8
14Tool
10,000 Days

10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2), 5:23-5:43. "Fetch me the spirit the son and the father/Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended/It's time now/My time now/GIVE ME MY/GIVE ME MY WIIIIIIINGS!!!" This speaks for itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-0rLI6-skQ
13Dot Hacker
Inhibition

Puncture, 4:23-6:22. As much as I could listen to Klinghoffer's voice for days and probably attempt to make love to it, his grandest moment with Dot Hacker thus far is an instrumental build-up, and lord is it magnificent. The piano, the humming, the eruption of electric guitars, this is perfection right here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdRs2aIFHC8
12 David Bowie
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

Five Years, 2:49-4:20. "We've got fiiiive years, stuck on my eyes/Fiiiive years, what a surprise/We've got fiiive years, my brain hurts a lot/Fiiiive years, that's all we've got!" We're getting into the big leagues now and very close to my favourite song ending ever. The passion in Bowie's voice in this segment as he slowly breaks down towards the end of the song is astounding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYwpnG-rkHI
11The Antlers
Hospice

Wake, 5:28-6:42. "DON'T EVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU YOU DESERVE THAT! DON'T EVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU YOU DESERVE THAT!" Again, speaks for itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fpI2PPRAM4
10dredg
El Cielo

The Canyon Behind Her, 4:38-6:40. "I cannoooot find the other haaaaalllf." Seriously almost beyond belief. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYoDzx6kHhU
9Jeff Buckley
Grace

Grace, 4:41-5:22. "Wait in the fire, wait in the fire, uhh uhhh UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHYEEEEEEEEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHUUUHHHHH". Its hard to do this part justice with words, although I've done my best with a lot of letters in capitals. Seriously, Jeff was a superhuman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZSTTEoHVxo
8There Will Be Fireworks
The Dark, Dark Bright

River, 1:59-2:35. "In TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME." For my love, avonbarksdale, < 3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3k7ZC0-4qE
7Pink Floyd
The Division Bell

Lost for Words, 3:15-3:34. "Can you see your days blighted by darkness?/Is it true you beat your fists on the floor?" Of course, it was inevitable the Floyd would become involved at some point. I just adore this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPwucFar9kM
6Anathema
A Natural Disaster

Pulled Under at 2000 Metres a Second. 0:59-1:12. "Lying insane, getting soaked in the rain/Draining the sky of the guilt and the shame/The nightmare is coming, the clouds are descending/Pulled under at 2000 METRES A SECOOOOOOOOOOONDDD!!!!" Shameless tribute to Sheep it might be, this is a fucking crazy tune. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yOeFk6CLug
5Radiohead
In Rainbows

Nude, 2:42-3:09. "You'll go to hell for what your diiirtyy miind is thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinking." Another double in band and the first double for one album, but I can't resist this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ky1td3_6LY
4Brand New
The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me

Jesus Christ, 3:10-4:16. "I know you're coming in the night like a thief/But I've had some time alone to hone my lying technique/I know you think that I'm someone you can trust/But I'm scared I'll get scared and I swear I'll try to nail you back up/So do you think that we could work out a sign?/So I'll know its you and that its over so I won't even try/I know you're coming for the people like me/We all got wood and nails, we're tongue tied to a hating factory/We all got wood and nails, and we sleep inside of this machine." Yeah a very Sputnik choice, but well worth being cliche for. Greatest bridge ever made. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjPyvoLXPs4
3Genesis
Nursery Cryme

The Musical Box, 9:12 "Why don't you touch me, touch me? Why don't you touch me, touch me? TOUCH ME NOW, NOW, NOW, NOW!!" The moment that inspired this whole list. Again, I just cry like a little child every time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X_3yOUKSOc
2Pink Floyd
Animals

Sheep, 8:05-9:55. Boy I bet no-one saw this one coming. My favourite song ending ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcRYdVlGXNQ
1Pink Floyd
Wish You Were Here

Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 1-5, 3:54-4:26. And here we are. The most haunting sounds I've ever heard come out of an instrument right here. It's as if Gilmour compresses all the hopelessness, loss, and absence of Syd's departure into those heavenly four notes. And I'm done, thank you for reading my list! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N8BYNMMjqU
