Pantera Ranked

Over my school vacation, I decided to revisit the discography of one of rmy favorite bands, rPantera. They were rpretty much one of the first r"extreme" metal bands (using the term rloosely) that I got into, and rDimebag rDarrell has had a massive influence on my guitar rplaying. rListening to all of the records again front to back, rhere's my take on how rthey rshould be rankedr(Note: I'm not including the 1980's albums because they were ressentially ra rdifferent band at the time, and Glam metal not being my thing I can't rgive an honest ranking rof rthose)
5Pantera
Reinventing the Steel

While songs like "I'll Cast a Shadow", "Goddamn Electric", and "Revolution is My
Name" are worthy additions to Pantera's list of classic songs, the album is packed
with filler, sees Phil at a lyrical low, and shows a band unsure where to take their
sound after evolving it every single record. Not a bad record, but nowhere near
their best
4Pantera
Cowboys From Hell

I'm predicting some people will not read further on simply because of how low I
placed this, but while I agree this is an excellent record (and where the band
started writing good music), some songwriting choices on this record leave a dated
quality to the overall package (i.e. Phil's head voice on tracks like "Medicine Man" and "Shattered"). The
album however features Dimebag (then known as Diamond) Darrell's most virtuosic
guitar solos
3Pantera
Far Beyond Driven

Very closely following Vulgar Display of Power in terms of quality, this album could
have arguably had the title of it's predecessor from how intense some of the songs are on this record
(i.e. 5 Minutes Alone, Throes of Rejection, I'm Broken, Hard Lines, Sunken Cheeks). The only reasons it ranks slightly lower
than VDoP is because it
a) loses some of the melodic dimension found on their previous record in favor of
just flat-out aggression (which would be fixed on TGSTK), and b) "Good Friends and
a Bottle of Pills"
2Pantera
Vulgar Display of Power

The first Pantera record I heard, I was hooked the first time I heard the main riff for
"Walk", and the album has remained one of my favorites from the band. I personally
believe that this record is where Pantera actually found their trademark sound
instead of Cowboys From Hell, and while the album loses some steam around the
last few tracks before "Hollow", it is a perfect blend of their melodic metal
influences and their much heavier hardcore influences that they would capitalize on
with later albums.
1Pantera
The Great Southern Trendkill

I've noticed that this album divides the fanbase pretty heavily. While some think it's
a pile of noisy trash and is scatter-brained with it's structure, others believe it's
experimentation and relentlessness puts it at the top of the discography. I consider
myself part of the latter crowd, this album remains not only my favorite Pantera
record, but one of my favorite heavy metal records of all time. From the vicious
opening scream of the title track to the crushing bottom-end of closer "The
Underground in America/Sandblasted Skin", you're in for a wild ride, hearing
firsthand the sounds of a band and it's members imploding. An absolute classic.
