Rowan5215
08.03.13 | List is Floyd |
jefflebowski
08.03.13 | not sure if i loved it quite as much as you did but it certainly lived up to the hype. less obviously funny and quotable than the previous two (hot fuzz especially), but the jokes were more complex and subtle, and the film as a whole had a lot more genuine heart. pegg especially was fantastic |
Rowan5215
08.03.13 | I respect your opinion man. Could just be the adrenaline still coursing through my veins and causing me to exaggerate, but as of right now it's pretty much one of my favourite movies already. I agree that it was more subtle than the last two but imo that just made it better once you took the time to appreciate it. And yeah, Pegg was just incredible, but I loved Frost (obviously), Freeman, and Brosnan. Oh and Bradley's little part was brilliant too. |
jefflebowski
08.03.13 | the cast in general was to die for, one of the best ensembles i've seen in ages. but yeah, i think the subtlety was a good thing, it made the interactions seem much more believable. also it was nice to see frost as the straight man with pegg as the jerk for a change...
i think this is probably second to hot fuzz overall but my old-school action movie knowledge is much better than my old-school sci-fi knowledge so that probably tips in in my favour somewhat |
Rowan5215
08.03.13 | Fair enough, I'm a sci-fi guy more than an action guy so this was more up my alley from the start. I admit I was a tad disappointed that Freeman died first and kinda was absent for the second half of the film but that's a minuscule nitpick. |
tempest--
08.03.13 | got some average reviews from what I've heard but it's Pegg and Frost so it must be good |
Rowan5215
08.03.13 | That's the mindset to have Lloyd. Average reviews? Fuck that. |
Vakarian12
08.03.13 | brother saw it yesterday and said it was really good, I'll probably go and see it sometime soon. |
dante1991
08.03.13 | Film was excellent and the special effects were so good for a comedy! I must say, it wasn't as funny or creative as the previous two though, so for now it's the weakest (although repeat viewings may change this - definitely did for Hot Fuzz.
So for now, I'd put:
- Hot Fuzz (10/10) (One of my favourite comedies ever)
- Shaun of the Dead (9/10)
- The World's End (8/10)
Overall, a superb trilogy. |
jefflebowski
08.03.13 | average reviews? the 92% on rottentomatoes says otherwise....
unless you're talking about fan reaction in which case it seems to have been pretty well received if not rapturously so |
Rowan5215
08.03.13 | I'd go:
The World's End (10/10)
Shaun of the Dead (9.5/10)
Hot Fuzz (9/10)
Never been able to see why people think Hot Fuzz is the best one tbh, I love it but it's the weakest for me. imo this had both the funniest and most emotional parts of the whole trilogy, plus the acting was absolutely top-notch, I just can't fault anything about it. |
Rowan5215
08.03.13 | I haven't been checking to see reactions on the internet, tbh I don't care that much. Everyone should at least give it a chance, I can't imagine anyone who liked the previous two disliking this. |
jefflebowski
08.03.13 | this certainly did the serious/emotional parts better than the other two, in a more sincere way too |
Rowan5215
08.03.13 | Yeah agreed, some parts were genuinely surprising and moving, and others I just lost my shit at. The part where Frost shoved his arm through the glass had me in tears of laughter. |
Polyethylene
08.03.13 | 8/10 movie, funny as shit |
tommygun
08.03.13 | swee |
Rowan5215
08.03.13 | Watch it and embrace the magic tommy. |
tommygun
08.03.13 | ok! |
Rowan5215
08.03.13 | You dig Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz dude? |
tommygun
08.03.13 | shaun rules haven't checked hot fuzz |
Rowan5215
08.03.13 | I prefer Shaun but Hot Fuzz is still damn sweet. Like I said I can't imagine you disliking The World's End if you like either of the other two, get on it son. |
tommygun
08.03.13 | swee will check
will write it down so i don't forget cos i am DRUNK right now heh |
Rowan5215
08.03.13 | There's a certain amount of irony in you being drunk that you'll get when you watch the World's End. Don't forget dude it'll change your life. |
Mad.
08.03.13 | Shaun > Fuzz > World's End
It was good, like a solid 8/10 but not nearly as witty or memorable as the first two. As people have pointe it out, they're not taking a genre they're/we're overly familiar with and basically parodying it like in the first two and it's it harder for them to be funny.
Eddie Marsan was fuckin' brilliant though |
Rowan5215
08.03.13 | I think this is just as witty as the other two, just less immediate. How are they not taking a genre they're familiar with and parodying it? That's exactly what this was.
Agreed on Eddie, the cast of this whole thing was fuckin' A. |
tommygun
08.03.13 | swee |
DirEnRefused
08.03.13 | saw it last week. definitely not a disappointment, but i'll need repeat viewings to see if it stacks up to other two. thought it might've got a little wayward and overly surreal at the end when they're being talked to by the light and shit.
the thing that most struck me though was how fucking phenomenal an actor simon pegg has become. |
DirEnRefused
08.03.13 | also nick frost saying "man baby" in a surly voice had me laughing for way too fucking long. |
Rowan5215
08.03.13 | I always thought Pegg was great but yeah he's pretty much up there with the best now. I was taken a bit off guard by the ending, yeah, but I can see why they did it that way. |
InfamousGrouse
08.03.13 | bit of a let-down |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | Sorry about the late reply here, why did you think that Grouse? |
XingKing
08.04.13 | Shaun is a 9/10
Hot Fuzz is about a 5/10
I have no idea if I will love this movie or not |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | Hmm interesting opinion there. What didn't you like about Hot Fuzz man? |
anarchistfish
08.04.13 | Seeing it tomorrow, expecting good things.
I seem to be in a minority which loves Hot Fuzz but dislikes Shaun of the Dead. |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | I suppose it really comes down to personal taste, I'm not an action movie guy at all so I can appreciate the humour in Hot Fuzz but not the action. Shaun, on the other hand, I can appreciate as a comedy AND as a zombie movie, and the same with the World's End as a sci-fi. |
Deviant.
08.04.13 | I think Shaun is very good but that's as far as I can go with it. Love Fuzz though
"Fair enough, I'm a sci-fi guy more than an action guy so this was more up my alley from the start. I admit I was a tad disappointed that Freeman died first and kinda was absent for the second half of the film but that's a minuscule nitpick."
SPOILER TAGS MOTHERUCKER, USE THEM!!! |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | Sorry Deviant, I kinda assumed that people who hadn't seen the movie wouldn't come to the thread, cos I was gonna be discussing it. |
ButteryBiscuitBass
08.04.13 | 1 is 1 |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | 2 is 1 |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | Damn that sucks andcas, be anticipating. |
Hoppoman
08.04.13 | I've actually been to the World's End pub in London, excellent place. |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | It's a real pub? Sweet. |
Hoppoman
08.04.13 | Yeah, all the pubs in the film are real london pubs. The World's End is a metal pub in Camden Town, I saw Threshold and Enochian Theory there. |
joshieboy
08.04.13 | I have to see this soon. |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | Hey joshie bro, how's it going? Definitely get on this. |
joshieboy
08.04.13 | Not bad man, you? I needa see this and Pain and Gain real soon. Massive Frost, Pegg, Wahlberg and The Rock fan. |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | I'm alright, doin' schoolwork as usual. Pain and Gain doesn't seem like my kinda thing at all, but
yeah I'm certain you'll love TWE if you loved Shaun and Fuzz dude. |
joshieboy
08.04.13 | Statham and Wahlberg movies are my shit man. Yeah I liked Fuzz more than Shaun but both were equally hilarious. |
Ire
08.04.13 | yeah pegg n frost wag |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | @Ire Don't forget Wright, but yeah all three of them are life.
@joshie Fair enough dude, I can't see any reason you'd dislike TWE even if you're not big on sci-fi, it's just so fucking good. |
joshieboy
08.04.13 | Heaps of negative reviews, but fuck those critics. |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | Damn I haven't seen anything. What were their complaints? |
joshieboy
08.04.13 | Doesn't even matter, critics are full of shit. |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | I just looked some up. One of the major ones I saw was that Frost played a "miserable dick" of a character. What the fuck? They're complaining about the dude trying to stretch his acting abilities and not just playing a dumb prick for once (which he actually manages to do really really well). That's fucked, man. |
Mad.
08.04.13 | "How are they not taking a genre they're familiar with and parodying it?"
Shaun and Fuzz ripped the shit out of zombie/Michael Bay movies, while this was basically just a sci-fi movie, with a load of jokes |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | I don't really see how it's that different. Are you saying that this just didn't parody the sci-fi genre? |
jefflebowski
08.04.13 | i don't wanna repeat myself, but for the most part the critical reception has been really positive... |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | Yeah I'm just going off what joshieboy said, I haven't really looked at what the reception has been that much. But that complaint I mentioned earlier, that one just pissed me off so bad. |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | So 10/10 agreed? |
intotheshit
08.04.13 | Rowan, you won't see these heaps of negative reviews because there aren't. It's more exaggeration and hyperbole by the worst Sputniker in years, Joshieboy.
Plus, what person over 16 trusts someone who thinks the epitome of cinema is an actor who calls himself the rock and the star of the happening?
Pl |
tempest--
08.04.13 | calling the rock an actor is a bit of a stretch |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | Lol, I may disagree with joshie's taste in movies in that regard but he's a bro and far from the worst Sputniker in years. |
tempest--
08.04.13 | he's near the bottom of the shit heap that is sputnik tho |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | Why? He's a perfectly fine guy. |
jefflebowski
08.04.13 | he's no crandynewman that's for sure |
JS19
08.04.13 | Wa filmed in my hometown. bloody weird watching this film |
InfamousGrouse
08.04.13 | "Shaun and Fuzz ripped the shit out of zombie... movies"
That is absolutely not the case. Pegg (and presumably Frost too) is a zombie fan through and through. Their idea for a full-length film spawned from an episode of Spaced in which Tim played far too much Resident Evil 2. He even has a Dawn of the Dead poster in their living room on that TV show. Didn't you notice all the subtle references to the zombie genre as a whole in that film? It's a brilliant fusion of homage and parody
anyway, The World's End would have been okay if my expectations were sky-high after six years of waiting for a third Pegg/Frost/Wright collab. It was consequently a disappointment. |
anarchistfish
08.04.13 | Gonna give it a 7/10. Better than Shaun, not as good as Hot Fuzz. I know it's the point, but it kinda went apeshit in the 2nd half and I liked the subtlety in the first part of the film.
"drinking fucking rain"
best line |
Rowan5215
08.04.13 | I know what you mean fish, but to me that's part of what made it so brilliant; the two halves were contrasted so perfectly and both were separately done as well as I could've hoped for so I can't really critique it. |
Deviant.
08.05.13 | "That is absolutely not the case. Pegg (and presumably Frost too) is a zombie fan through and through. I think you misconstrued what he actually meant by "ripping" |

08.05.13 | King Gay xD |
XingKing
08.05.13 | "Hmm interesting opinion there. What didn't you like about Hot Fuzz man?"
I'm not really sure, to be honest. Shaun of the dead was clever and hilarious, plus I fucking love zombie movies. It's just a damn near perfect film. I never found any humor in Hot Fuzz and it was just boring and over praised in my eyes. I've watched it about 5 times and never enjoyed it once but every time I get into a discussion about it, I feel the need to watch it again in hopes that I will actually enjoy it. I feel like some kinda retard for not thinking it's funny |
Rowan5215
08.05.13 | Haha well it's different strokes for different folks Xing so I guess if you don't like Hot Fuzz, you don't like it. I think it's the weakest of the three but it's a still damn fine film to me. Agreed about Shaun though, that one is just .5 off the perfect score for me. Did you end up seeing The World's End yet? |
anarchistfish
08.05.13 | " It's just a damn near perfect film. I never found any humor in Hot Fuzz and it was just boring and over praised in my eyes."
Basically what I feel about Shaun of the Dead |
XingKing
08.05.13 | It doesn't come out for close to three weeks over here but I'll definitely be seeing it when it comes out |
anarchistfish
08.05.13 | hot fuzz is probably in my top 10 films of all time |

Rowan5215
09.22.14 | "A man of your legendary drinking prowess, drinking, fucking, RAIN"
