Pearljamology (revised)

The albums of Pearl Jam in rorder of preference.
9Pearl Jam
Vitalogy

Vitalogy had the potential to be a better album than it
actually is. Some of the band's best songs
are here. But it definitely has more skip-worthy
moments than any other PJ album, and you may
as well finish your listen on "Immortality", rather than
on the actual closing track. Besr song: "Immortality"
8Pearl Jam
Backspacer

The band's latest release, Backspacer lacks some of the
creativity of other PJ records, but makes up
for it with sheer energy. If you're a fan, don't miss this
one. If you're new to the band, jam the
first 2 albums instead of this or anything else. Best
song: "Amongst the Waves"
7Pearl Jam
Binaural

Binaural opens up and closes wonderfully, and is a
highly overlooked record. McCready's lead
work on here isn't his best, but the album has a lot of
texture in it and beckons repeated
listening. Best song: "Nothing As It Seems"
6Pearl Jam
Yield

Yield is a pretty cool record. Entertaining from top to
bottom, it also features an impressive
hidden track. Best song "All Those Yesterdays (w/
hidden track)"
5Pearl Jam
Riot Act

Riot Act used to be my least favorite by the band, but
recently it grew on me. McCready does
some fine lead work on this. Best song: "Get Right"
4Pearl Jam
No Code

No Code cannot be grasped with one listen. It's easily
the band's most eclectic record. "Hail,Hail"
feels more like an opener than "Sometimes"; and "I'm
Open" is more memorable than "Around
the Bend". But the real treat is "Red Mosquito", which
features an impressive liead by McCready.
Best song: "Red Mosquito"
3Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam's "comeback album" (the band never really
went away, even though they had many
issues). McCready has some epic lead work here, and
"Life Wasted" works greatly as an opener,
while "Inside Job" does a nearly-as-good job as a closer.
Best song: "Big Wave"
2Pearl Jam
Vs.

Ah, Vs. If Ten made a solid a statement as any, this
album most certainly did it's part to ensure
the band's status as icons of the 90's. Where Ten might
be an easy listen, Vs. is dark, gritty, filthy
and grimy. While the singles rule hard, the real
standout here is the highly overlooked "Rats".
Best song: "Rats"
1Pearl Jam
Ten

Yes, I know what you're thinking: "typical fan". But as
impressive as some of the other albums
might be (and Vs. does come dangerously close), Ten
has an emotional power that is
unparalleled. From the epic opener "Once" to the fitting
closer "Release", this album has it all:
from epic rockers to gut-wrenching ballads. Through it
all, the socially aware thematic is
prevalent, and this is one album that truly stands the
test of time. One of the best releases of the
90's. Best song: "Why Go"
