DarkSideOfLucca
05.03.13 | Well whether you're for or against guns I'd hope the general consensus is that buying guns for elementary school students is fucking retarded. Apparently not by looking at the numbers of people who buy this shit, but I thought it was common sense not to get a gun for a 5 year old regardless of your opinion on gun laws. |
Surtur
05.03.13 | There should be no debate. America needs gun control. |
anarchistfish
05.03.13 | Buying kids guns lets them get used to them so they're more skilled with them when they're older |
DarkSideOfLucca
05.03.13 | According to that article 60,000 rifles (for kids, obviously) were sold last year so apparently a lot of people :/ |
DarkSideOfLucca
05.03.13 | @fish- but does it really have to start when they're learning addition/ABC's/etc? That just seems...stupid |

05.03.13 | "Apparently not by looking at the numbers "
I'd be careful with numbers and their interpretation, for multiple reasons. One being that we suck at interpreting statistics (so do blogs and news quite often btw) and our brain inherently sucks at probability. Generalizations in these cases never lead anywhere.
"Buying kids guns lets them get used to them so they're more skilled with them when they're older"
That would at least be the reasoning, yes. Which I don't personally object to when done in a proper environment. |

Plus, civilians having guns has nothing to do with war. |

yeah guns are dumb etc etc we don't need another list about it |

05.03.13 | getting a gun for opening a bank account was a good idea because then people were given a means to defend their deposits since banks are incompetent at securing assets themselves

Wolfhorde
05.03.13 | Ironically, the prevalence of guns in American households isn't much higher than in Canada or Switzerland. (the latter of which doesn't even serial numbers/registering processes for guns) Which is obviously relative to the population size but still. |
Eclecticist
05.03.13 | yea but Canada and Switzerland have mandatory gun registration laws an amurrrica doesn't so there's prolly lots of unaccounted firearms circulating through the country |
Wolfhorde
05.03.13 | Except that that's only half true. And having 'unaccounted' firearms in circulation - especially for manufacturing countries isn't really anything out of the ordinary - the only difference is whether it's actually within the manufacturing country or somewhere else. |

05.03.13 | Because making an attempt to teach a child proper gun handling (misguided or not) has anything to do with proper alcohol consumption? |
Wolfhorde
05.03.13 | Simplistic reasoning 101:"What's more dangerous?" You should know better than to take such baits, old man. |
Eclecticist
05.03.13 | "Because making an attempt to teach a child proper gun handling (misguided or not) has anything to do with proper alcohol consumption?"
I didn't relate the two I am just pointing out that both are misguided. |

05.03.13 | dont take away my kids right to have his "first rifle", Obama. |
omnipanzer
05.03.13 | While I can think of no reason for a child in an urban environment to ever even see a gun let alone be given one this is not the case in a rural setting. It is tradition for a child to be given a gun at a young age as he/she is expected to learn responsibility by helping protect and feed the family. This is a tradition that has transpired properly millions of times all over the world (not just America). Rural schools being let out for hunting season every year is very common place. It's an easy tradition to shun for anyone who's never stepped foot on a farm or lived in the middle of a wooded area. That being said marketing weapons directly to children is distasteful as they should be viewed as utilitarian, not as an accessory. |
Wolfhorde
05.03.13 | Historically it kind of makes sense, considering that back then infrastructure in rural areas was shit and expecting law enforcement to deal with your shit only earned you laughter. No idea whether it's still the case but I wouldn't be surprised if at least response time in certain areas is 'eh'. Obviously how thise whole thing is politically marketed is a bunch of horseshit. But having some sort of "fighting" or "fighting training" as leisure time activity doesn't have to lead to people going on homicidal rages and or unleashing their training on anyone. Most proper environments actually prohibit that. |
omnipanzer
05.03.13 | There is that as well as predatory animals which is more along the lines of what I was referring to.
Protecting the chickens from the foxes etc etc. |
Wolfhorde
05.03.13 | And if we're being realistic for a moment, traditions very often also outstay their welcome from a practical angle. Further, we can't expect tradition and societal tendencies to just rapidly change or enforce rapid change. (which together with the 'right' or rather 'wrong' circumstances lead to things like Germany 1933)
Well, that's obviously another point - one that also isn't necessarily easy to understand for someone who never had to rely on himself for protection from wild animals. |
omnipanzer
05.03.13 | I agree completely Wolfy, the amount of outrage based solely on ignorance seems to be increasing exponentially the last few years and is driving me nuts though. |
