Laputa was a well known gothic visual kei band that originally formed in 1993. Within just three years, Laputa was catapulted to the top of the 90's visual kei scene, with their 1998 and 1999 albums, "~Jakou~" and "~Kakera~", both reaching number 10 on the Oricon charts, becoming their best selling albums in their catalog. However, by 2001, their huge success was starting to wind down, and their final mini-album, 2004's "Material Pleasures", only reached number 89 on the Oricon charts. The group finally ended up splitting by the end of 2004. Presumably due to their short run of mainstream success, Laputa is often considered to be one of the most influential and breakthrough groups of the Nagoya subgenre of visual kei, which is often characterized by its bleak and gothic-inspired sound.
