銀杏BOYZ (Ging Nang Boyz) were formed in 2003 by vocalist/guitarist 峯田和伸 (Mineta Kazunobu) after the breakup of his previous band Going Steady, with guitarist チン中村 (Chin Nakamura), bassist 安孫子真哉 (Abiko Shinya), and drummer 村井守 (Murai Mamoru) completing the lineup. Their particular infusion of punk rock with indie rock and highly melodic and catchy pop has been mixed over their career with a diverse range of styles such as hardcore, J-pop, noise, and the piano ballad, and the band is extremely well known for their passionate, energetic, loud and sloppy performances with occasionally divergences into an acoustic track or two. Making further use of the Weezer-inspired lyrical style he first developed in Going Steady, frontman Mineta primarily writes on topics of love, boredom, angst, lust, and frustration such that his lyrics are frequently noted for the intense portrayal of youth therein. Attracting further publicity through their lengthy, bizarre music videos and recurring run-ins with the law for indecency during performances, the Ging Nang Boyz have earned a dedicated following of (mostly adolescent) fans as well as a small amount of notoriety outside of Japan.
The band debuted with the albums 『君と僕の第三次世界大戦的恋愛革命』 and 『DOOR』, released simultaneously on January 15, 2005. Reaching the 6th and 7th spots on the Oricon charts at the time, American musician Mike Huguenor of Shinobu and Hard Girls recalls that "just as unexpectedly as their meteoric rise, the band went nearly silent" in the following years. Between 2007 to 2010, Ging Nang Boyz released only five singles while performing fewer and fewer shows. In late 2013, the band announced that Nakamura and Abiko had both left Ging Nang Boyz, and shortly afterward revealed that two new albums--『光のなかに立っていてね』 and 『BEACH』--were both set to be released on January 15, 2014, exactly 9 years after their first two full-lengths. Something of a stylistic departure, 『光のなかに立っていてね』 is heavily oriented by dance, pop and electronic music, featuring polished re-recordings of songs from the band's back catalogue with heavily programmed instrumentation. On the other hand, its companion, the "live remix album" 『BEACH』 (programmed and mixed entirely by Abiko), features recordings from Ging Nang Boyz's famously raw live performances laden with electronic augmentations and filtered through extremely harsh, noisy production to create an extreme punk rock experience.
In December of 2013, just before the release of 『光のなかに立っていてね』 and 『BEACH』, Murai also left the band, with Mineta remaining as the sole member of Ging Nang Boyz. Mineta continued to play shows under the Ging Nang Boyz name as an acoustic act until late 2015, when he recruited a lineup of support musicians for full band live performances and recordings, although Mineta remains the only official member of Ging Nang Boyz. The band released a DVD/Blu-ray set in March 2016 consisting of concert footage from 2008, 2012 and 2015--entitled 『愛地獄』--which was followed in April by a new single, 「生きたい」. Additionally, a TV drama miniseries titled 『奇跡の人』 aired that year with Mineta in the starring role; the first press of the DVD box set included Ging Nang Boyz's song 「骨」 on a special CD single. 2016 also saw the release of 『きれいなひとりぼっちたち』, a tribute album showcasing covers of Ging Nang Boyz songs by prominent Japanese artists such as Yuki, Sambomaster and Going Under Ground. In February 2017, the band issued a singles collection album, 『ラストラーダ』, exclusively on cassette. « hide
