On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the groupbeingblockedfromperforming,with at least three US statespassing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues.Theyreleasedanumber ofplatinum-selling albums, including AntichristSuperstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums,alongwiththeirhighly-stylizedmusic videos and worldwide touring, brought publicrecognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news mediafalselyblamedtheband for influencingthe perpetrators of the Columbine massacre.As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000's, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon WiederhornofMTV,inJune2003,referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one ofthemosticonicandcontroversial figures inheavy metal music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groupsandmusicians,bothinmetal-associated acts and also in widerpopular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rockbandon their 100GreatArtistsof Hard Rock. They were inducted into theKerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated forfourGrammy Awards.In theUS, theband has seen eight of its releases debut in the topten, including two number-one albums.
