They have a wide-ranging sound andarefrequently cited as one of the most influential indie acts. The bandwas formed in 1982 as a then side project by then Jesus and Mary Chain drummer Bobbie Gillespie. Gillespie soon lefttheJesus and Mary Chain in 1986 and decided to devote his whole attention to Primal Scream. THe band's early sound wasinfluencedbythe stones and the byrds and the band made a couple of indie releases that implemented this sound. However bythe early 90's theband had a new love; rave and house music that was blossoming in the UK. So, they attempted to fuse theirclassic rock sound withthe sounds of electronica. The resulting album, 1991's Screamadelica has been hailed as classic by manypublications and isregardedas one of the 90's watershed releases. After the huge success of Screamdelica, the band returned toit's original sound with 1994'sGiveOut But Don't Give Up, which was meet by critical and commercial scorn, motivating the bandto return to the warped dance rockthatmade them famous. They recruited Stone Roses Bassist Gary 'Mani' Mounfield and madeVanishing Point, which was basicallyScreamadelica reworked to feature trip hop and industrial influences. It was a moderatesuccess and the band followed it up withXTRMNTR which was critically adored and widely accepted as the second masterworkthe band had created after Screamadelica. Theband largely kept the same switching sound; dance rock albums followed byblues rock throughout the 2000's which yielded EvilHeat,Riot City Blues, And Beautiful Future. « hide
