Phish is an American rock band most noted for jamming and improvisation. In 2009, they returned to tour consistently, as in the past. Their music had elements of a wide variety of genres, including rock, jazz, bluegrass, heavy metal, folk, blues, progressive rock, acoustic, and classical. Each Phish concert was original in terms of the songs included, the order in which they appeared, and the way in which they were performed: most of their songs were never played the same way twice. Although the group received little radio play or pop exposure, Phish developed a large following by word of mouth, similar to the Grateful Dead (which most phans cringe to read or hear). Phish are known for their cult-like fanbase with obsessive cd collections. Most live concerts are heard to find recordings from, but fans will bring boom-microphones and record the concert and trade them online.
