Iced Earth

Iced Earth is an American heavy metal band that combines influences from thrash metal, power metal, NWOBHM, progressive metal as well as gothic touches. The central figure of Iced Earth is rhythm guitarist and songwriter Jon Schaffer, who formed Purgatory in Indiana in 1984. After moving to Florida and changing their name to Iced Earth, the group's Enter the Realm demo became popular enough to enable the release of their eponymous debut LP in 1991. Since then, the band has gone through numerous lineup changes, thanks in part to Schaffer's authoritarian rule. After a three-year hiatus following the tour for Night of the Stormrider, Matthew Barlow became Iced Earth's lead singer, first appearing on 1995's Burnt Offerings. His vocals proved extremely popular, and he remained with the band for many years, recording three more albums with them. Although this period is often seen as their greatest, Barlow eventually parted ways with the group in 2003, opting to pursue a career with the United States Department of Homeland Security. Conveniently, Tim 'Ripper' Owens soon left Judas Priest (making room for a returning Rob Halford) and joined up with Iced Earth shortly after. His first album with the band, The Glorious Burden, is an examination of many aspects of warfare and military figures who have shaped the modern world, closing with a 30-minute trilogy based on the Battle of Gettysburg. Many fans had mixed feelings about Owens, but he remained on board for Framing Armageddon (Something Wicked Part 1), the first of a two-album concept created by Schaffer, the origin of which goes back to 1999's Something Wicked This Way Comes. In late 2007 however, mere months after the release of their eighth album, Schaffer announced that Matt Barlow would be rejoining the group, taking up his old position for The Crucible Of Man (Something Wicked Part 2). Although opinions on the album itself would be divided, Iced Earth's recognizable voice was eagerly welcomed back. Unfortunately, Barlow's return was not to last for more than a few years, as he again stated personal commitments took precedence over his role in the band. He left in 2011, with Into Eternity singer Stu Block announced as his replacement. Dystopia was released during the same year, and generally praised as a return-to-form. The album was followed by Iced Earth's most extensive tour to date. Currently, the band are working on material for their eleventh record, titled Plagues of Babylon, which is set to be released in October 2013. « hide
