Mark "Bez" Berry would join them on stage to excite the crowd. They were a part of theMadchestermovement, along with the Stone Roses. They were also signed to the legendary Factory Records, a label run by music impresarioTony Wilsonand which released records by bands such as New Order, Joy Division, James, and A Certain Ratio. Their demise came about when,on a trip toBarbados where they planned to record their follow-up to their magnum opus Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, the members sold theirfurnitureand, allegedly, their clothes for crack cocaine. They also tried to kidnap Johnny Marr of the Smiths. After arriving back in London,Shaun Ryderheld the master tapes to their album for ransom, forcing Tony Wilson to pay £50 for them. After listening to the tapes, Wilsonrealized that therewere no lyrics, for Ryder had refused to write them. All the money that went towards this record forced Factory Records todeclare bankruptcyand seek a buyout from London Records. After the group split, Shaun Ryder surprised everyone by not overdosing on drugsand instead forminga new (albeit similar) band Black Grape. « hide
