Baroness is a sludge metal band from Savannah, Georgia, known for embracing the ferocity and sharp technique of new-millennium metal while also integrating melodic accents and intelligent guitar work that suggests the influence of indie rock and post-metal. The group has shared the stage with many of the biggest names in modern metal, including Mastodon, Lamb of God, Opeth,HighonFire, Torche,Kylesa, Intronaut, and many more.Baroness was formed in 2003 by vocalist, guitarist and bandleader John Dyer Baizley, guitarist Tim Loose, bassist Summer Welch, and drummer Allen Blickle. After releasing two EPs through local label Hyperrealist Records, Loose left the band, replaced by drummer Allen Blickle's brother Brian. In 2007, the band signed on to Relapse Records, already known for launching the careers of similarly-minded acts such asMastodon and High on Fire. Baroness' Phillip Cope-produced debut, "Red Album", was released in September 2007. The album was received well by the metal community and sold modestly well. Brian Blickle parted ways with the band a year after the album's release, and was replaced by Pete Adams.Baroness enlisted respected indie producer John Congleton for their second studio album, 2009's "Blue Record". It was widely regarded as an improvement over their debut, and peaked at #117 in the American charts. Baroness spent the next year playing a series of high-profile shows, including appearances at Coachella, Bonnaroo, and the Australian Soundware Festival, as well as an opening gig for Metallica alongside Lamb of God.Founding bassist Summer Welch quit just before the band began work on their third album. Unable to find a replacement in time, Baizley had to assume bass duties while Baroness was in the studio. The double album "Yellow and Green" arrived in July of 2012. More moody & subdued than their previous work, "Yellow and Green" marked a stylistic departure for Baroness, and became their highest-selling release by a wide margin due to its appeal across multiple genres. Baroness, joined by replacement bassist Matthew Maggioni, embarked on a tour of Europe, where the new album was charting in several countries. However, less than a month into the tour, the band's tour bus fell more than 30 feet off a viaduct near Bath, England. The accident crushed Baizely's left hand, an injury that required an 8-hour reconstructive surgery and a 2-week stay in a Bath hospital. Several crew members also received serious injuries, and Blickle and Maggioni both suffered fractured vertebrae, and left the band as a result. With only 2 members remaining and Baizley facing months of grueling physical therapy in an attempt to fully regain use of his left arm and hand, the future of Baroness was momentarily in question, until Baizley posted a letter to Baroness’ website stating “Baroness doesn’t stop because we got hurt on the way to work.”, and that the crash had only made the band“more resolute and passionate about our music than ever.” In spring 2013, the band recruited bassist/keyboardist Nick Jost and drummer Sebastian Thompson (formerly of Trans Am) and announced a 2013 US headlining tour. After over 2 years of international touring, Baroness announced their fourth album, Purple, would be released on their own newly formed label, Abraxan Hymns. The album was released in December 2015 to critical acclaim and strong sales, spearheaded by the single "Shock Me" (Later nominated for a Grammy for "best metal performance"). Pete Adams announced his departure from the band in June 2017, and was replaced by Gina Gleason shortly afterwards. « hide
