Zazen Boys were formed in Tokyo in 2003 by Shutoku Mukai of Number Girl fame. Originally consisting of fellow Number Girl bandmate Ahito Inazawaon drums, Sou Yoshikane on guitar, and Hidekazu Hinata on bass, Zazen Boy's first two releases explored a distinctive blend of post-punk, dub, funk,and hip-hop tempered by complex rhythms evocative of math rock and the occasional free-form jam. In 2005, Inazawa left the band due to creative differences and the desire to form his own band, Vola And The Oriental Machine, with former BuffaloGirl support drummer Atsushi Matsushita filling his role. In early 2007, Hinata left to pursue his work with Straightener and a new project, and wasreplaced by Ichiro Yoshida. The band's recent work features prominent keyboards and signals an even stronger divergence from the blazing post-hardcore that characterized Number Girl.Zazen Boys are based at Mukai's Matsuri Studio, which has recorded most of the band's material, with the exception of Zazen Boys 4, recorded byDave Fridmann in New York.
