In 1994, Seo Taiji and Boys suddenly became a rock band, taking strong influence from the nu metal style that was becoming popular at the time.
Along with the change in sound came a change in lyrics as well, as the band focused more closely on politics, mainly regarding the education of young South Koreans. This made the group greatly scrutinized by the South Korean government, who made numerous efforts to censor the group to no avail, as their success doubled by the year.
In January of 1996, Seo Taiji and Boys suddenly disbanded, with Taiji himself supposedly retiring from the entertainment industry, before returning in 1998 as a solo artist. The loud and expressive views of Seo Taiji and Boys remain vastly significant today, as they were credited with breaking away from the more conservative style of Korean pop, and ushering in the more risque, and monstrously popular, rebirth of Korean pop that the world knows of today. « hide |
