For whatever reason critics can never categorize this band correctly. Chan touched on this with his review of the last Paramore record. If I remember right Rolling Stone said the band utilized "screwy off time mathcore." Like what?

This is growing into my favorite album of theirs to date. I agree that their last album was misunderstood. Hell, i wasn't initially a fan of it but when i saw them perform songs from that album live, opinions that i had for those songs slowly started to change. Especially when comparing it to what their peers (fall out boy) were doing at that time which sounded almost disingenuous in comparison.

My main gripe that I've had for pretty much all of their previous albums is that for every good chunk of great songs that were on them, there were always a few that didn't leave the same impact. I can't really say that for this one even if some elements of songs aren't as striking as others, the songs overall are never really a slog to get through. I'm excited for this band now and look forward to what they'll do next.

"Head banging punk rockers" is not a description I would ever use to describe any period of this band's career.

Great review as always though. Have tried several times to get into this band and I just can't. They're just so bland and generic.

I think I may be raising this to a 4.5 despite not getting "No Friend" at all and thinking "Caught In the Middle" is catchy but a bit throwaway. Just so many extremely strong songs here.

If you removed the vocals from this then musically this is basically a talking heads record.

It warms my heart seeing this at a 3.4 average after the 2.8 of the last one :]

I feel like the s/t had better songs overall, yet this is more consistently good. Not to mention it's a fuckton catchier for the most part.

Yeah, the s/t really shouldn't have been a 2.8 imo

that was probably due to Chan's shit review, then again the record was a complete shift in direction for the most part and I don't think everyone really expected it. Not to mention it does have quite a few problems.
