my arms, still life and bwp are peak opeth songwriting. preferring basic bitch deliverance over any one of em gets me confuddled!

Still life is overrated but I still love it. BWP and MAYH are both more enjoyable imo

This was the last good Opeth for me and Deliverance was their worst before they went full prog which just wasn’t for me
I think Deliverance was the worst of their metal era because they used all the best chill moments in Damnation which ruled

I love Heritage and generally like their later albums too but agreed with Shem. Deliverance is good but I don’t understand thinking it’s better than any of their other pre-2010s work.

Liking Opeth but slandering Still Life hurts my brain and heart. SL and BWP are albums with all of their most important ideas perfected. Peak progressive metal.

I’m sure I said it at least once already in this thread but the first time I heard the cleans over blastbeats in The Lotus Eater blew me away

yeah, Watershed-era Opeth are generally so balanced and intriguing, and with tons of personality still

I've often dreamed of an Opeth album that was filled with pure Watershed tier DM moments. Would easily be my favorite album from the band.
But then again, it probably has a lot to do with the context of the moments too. Bookending them with all the clean moments elevates the DM more than it normally would.

In the context of Opeth's discography, Galbador is 100% correct. But out of all progressive metal I would say a few bands like maudlin of the Well, Porcupine Tree's later work, and Tool give them a run for their money.
I know Akerfeldt was uninspired to write more music like this and scrapped what he had done so far to start over with Heritage, but I'd also be happy with more stuff like this album.
I don't even need any more extreme metal, given Burden, the first 2/3 of Hessian Peel, and the quieter parts of Heir Apparent and Lotus Eater are all tops. Same with GR which was also pretty quirky and prog rockish a lot of the time.
