Review Summary: Music at its finest
Possibly the most revolutionary album ever released,
Nevermind started one of the biggest fads ever in America: Grunge. Grunge didn't just influence music, it transformed fashion as well.
Nirvana (made up by frontman Kurt Cobain, bassist Krist Noveselic, and drummer Dave Grohl) was a band from Aberdeen, Washington. They were a part of the regional "grunge scene" which flourished in Seattle. Nirvana combined elements of melody, heavily distorted guitars, and simple riffs. In
Smells Like Teen Spirit, these elements can be seen clearly. It starts with a simple riff and slows down for the verse. This is called a start/stop structure (which Cobain used quite often). The song builds up to the chorus where Cobain screams the words, the distorted guitar rages, and the pace picks up.
Territorial Pissings shows the heavier side of Nirvana. The pace is fast, the sound is heavily, and vocals are screamed throughout.
Come as You Are portrays a more melodic side of Nirvana. It has a catchy riff that has a very "watery" sound to it. This was made by Kurt's EHX Small Clone (which was also used on SLTS). Kurt voice is very melodic in this song which adds to it.
If you haven't heard this album yet, you are missing out. The only album I like more than this one is In Utero. Every song on it is fantastic. It really cannot get better than this!
